Couple charged after cops found drugs, cash in their home will remain behind bars

[00:00:00]Right now at 5:30, a man and a woman accused of taking part in a deadly robbery and shooting appeared in court today.

[00:00:05]>> The incident happened last month in Miami Gardens and when police responded to the scene, they discovered millions of dollars in drugs and cash. Local 10's Terrell Forney is live in Miami with what happened in court, Terrell.

[00:00:18]>> Yeah, from the beginning this was reported as a home invasion robbery and it turned into a homicide. Police responded and they determined that this was actually a drug house in their words. In fact, this turned into the largest drug seizure in the history of Miami Gardens. The couple that actually lives at the home, they have been in jail as a result ever since, but today their attorneys were in court trying to fight for their release at least on bond ahead of their trial. So, you will hear from those defense attorneys and you will also hear from one of the detectives working this case.

[00:01:05]>> I mean, he when he heard the shots, he continued to go forward towards the sound, didn't retreat backwards.

[00:01:11]>> The testimony part of an Arthur hearing for Anthony Gordon and his girlfriend Dinette Young, a couple who has been in jail for more than a month after a reported home invasion robbery at their Miami Gardens home. Gordon and Young claim to be victims on that day. Police arrived and uncovered what they say was a record-setting seizure of 1.3 million dollars in cash and illegal drugs with a street value of roughly 5 million.

[00:01:40]>> Just because you know drugs are present doesn't mean you're the one who controls it.

[00:01:43]>> The bottom line is is they can't prove an armed trafficking because they can't prove actual possession.

[00:01:49]>> The couple currently being held without bond on a laundry list of drug-related felonies is trying to convince the court to set a bond to allow for their release.

[00:01:57]>> Crystal Mel, the heart of those little bundles >> But in the end, the evidence presented in court may have been overwhelming.

[00:02:03]Photos of cash, multiple weapons, and those drugs meant the judge would decline to set a bond for the couple.

[00:02:10]>> And I find that it's very difficult for me to believe that she survived on her salary with having access to all of these amounts of narcotics.

[00:02:24]>> So, part of an Arthur hearing is determining whether those defendants have resources, legal resources, to pay a bond if one were issued. In the end, you heard the judge, she basically declined to offer a bond. The defense attorneys for this man and woman, they say that none of the evidence presented in court proves that those drugs and the cash were actually tied to them. They believe that those defendants are basically innocent victims of that home invasion robbery which happened last month. Nonetheless, those defense attorneys say that they will continue to fight for their release on bond.
