And basically what happened is during the infusion, the iron extravasated out of her veins into her skin, causing something called hemosiderin staining, where insoluble complexes of iron called hemosiderin gets stuck and left in the skin. The body does not do a very good job of breaking down hemosiderin and reabsorbing it, so these marks can last a long time and can sometimes even be permanent. Treatments can sometimes be helpful like laser treatments to help zap those hemosiderin depositions and break them up into smaller pieces that are more easily absorbed, but it is really tricky to treat and should be done so by an expert.
