Nietzsche's eternal recurrence is a thought experiment asking whether you could willingly live your life exactly the same way, forever, with all its joys and pains; most people fail this test not because their lives are tragic, but because they are 'sleepwalking'—waiting for a real life that has not yet arrived.

Nietzsche Asked One Question. Could You Live This Life Again — Forever? #philosophyAdded:
Nietzsche asked one question.
Live this life again, exactly the same, forever.
Could you bear it? He called it the eternal [music] recurrence.
Imagine a demon comes to you at your loneliest hour and tells you every joy and every pain you have ever known will return in the same order, the same intensity, for eternity.
He was not doing metaphysics. He was handing you a measuring stick.
Look at today.
Could you choose this day again, exactly, an infinite number of times?
Most [music] people fail this test.
Not because their lives are tragic.
Because they are sleepwalking. They are waiting for a real life that [music] has not arrived.
Marcus Aurelius asked the same thing in different [music] words.
So did Epictetus.
Live such that today, repeated, would not be a punishment.
Nietzsche walked these mountains 6 [music] hours a day.
He wrote Zarathustra on his feet.
He chose the recurrence. [music] He said yes to all of it.
Then in Turin, he saw a horse being beaten.
He ran [music] into the street, threw his arms around its neck, and never spoke again with a clear mind.
Sympathy is what [music] finally broke him.
But the question survived.
It is still the [music] cleanest test there is.
Could you live today again, exactly, forever?
