Design thinking is a nonlinear, iterative process that involves understanding a problem through research and interviews, generating ideas through brainstorming, and prototyping solutions while continuously gathering feedback to refine the product. This process enables individuals to become social innovators and change makers by systematically addressing real-world challenges through human-centered design.

because it's going live.
>> You're speaking >> two of them.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. Okay. So, I guess I'm double miked. Okay. Um T t. Yeah. Okay. So, um you will be building tea today. You will be making some tea. Um and you are going to be testing it on somebody else. That's one of the key features of the design thinking process is getting feedback and making changes with that feedback. Um we're also going to give you a little freebie today. So, make sure you have your phones to scan items because I didn't bring hard copies of a lot of things. Um, but these are freebies that you will not get anywhere else except for in this session. So, just an FYI on that.
>> Ready?
>> Almost ready.
>> You know what email you sent the presentation to?
>> I'm sorry.
>> The email.
>> I sent it to um speaker at it was all right.
>> Okay.
I'm going to start by handing out a worksheet, so I can make sure everybody got a worksheet. I do not have pens or pencils, so just an FY on that. But we're going to pass that out while they're still looking for our presentation.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah. Can make sure they each get one of these.
I'm sorry.
>> Yes, we do. We already sent it to speaker at NYC. Yeah. And I have my my laptop if that makes it easier. Okay.
>> Okay.
Give you three over here. You can pass up.
Give you one.
Oh, I'm glad. Every country in the world has something with tea. So, it was an easy thing.
>> You can just grab one and pass it down.
I will appreciate it. Thank you. Hi. How are you?
>> Doing good.
You can grab one, pass it down.
>> Oh, okay. Okay. Oh, that's fine. I was just waiting like for you guys to turn it on. So, that's why I was like, >> "Yeah, yeah."
Okay, perfect. Yeah. Um, I think I got it right now. So, no problem. Thank you.
Hi.
>> Doing good. And yourself. Maybe you can grab one and pass it down. I'll appreciate it. And I'll give you guys two over here and I'll >> another one. Sure. Sure. No problem. All right.
See, I think this is four. Just grab one and pass it down. Hi.
>> Hi.
>> Let's see. She has one. So, I'll just give you one over there. Hi. Hi.
It's okay. You can have it as extras to follow along. Okay.
Oh, you have extra.
>> Oh, yes.
Oh, thank you.
Did everybody get a worksheet? Anybody?
Thank you.
I don't have any pens. I'm sorry. It's okay. I mean, you can always take your notes on your phone just to keep track of it. But yeah, I don't have any pens.
We forgot about those.
If they can't get us going, I might do a little switcheroo and we might start with this. Okay. But I mean, hopefully not.
Okay, good. Okay.
I was about to say so we can switch devices if that's easier.
Yay.
Perfect. Is there any way you can make it larger?
If you want to like scroll through that just you can do it on this.
>> Okay. And I can play the videos and everything from here, right?
>> I believe so. And then Yeah, you just >> Oh, go back. Go back. Go back. Go back.
Go back. Go back. That one is not playing. That's a video that would have started playing automatically.
Okay. All right. If it doesn't, I'll figure it out.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Okay. All right. Yeah, I'll get started.
>> Okay. The only thing is my videos are not playing.
>> Yeah. In order to do that.
>> Okay.
Um, >> like this one is a video and it's supposed to.
>> Can you get have to access them on YouTube?
>> I'm sorry.
>> You have access to them on YouTube?
>> Uh, no. Not all of them. No. Some of them, yes, but not all of them.
>> Juliana, can you find me, please?
>> She's like, you don't are saying to open the video in another tab?
>> No. only said I need to ask her how to do it because she doesn't have access to her videos on YouTube.
>> It's okay. I can figure it out. I I can make it work without the videos. No worries.
>> No worries. That's right. No worries. No worries. Okay. All right.
And then I just use there to scroll between the Yeah. Okay. Perfect.
>> I can scroll too. It's just >> Okay.
>> Okay. All right. Perfect. Thank you. All right. Okay. Welcome back everyone.
Sorry about the technical difficulties.
So, my our first initial surprise is this little QR code if you want to scan it, if you can scan it. Um, and I'll put it back at the end of the session if you need it. Uh, so this is actually a workbook designed specifically for the International Youth Conference. It pretty much going to walk you through everything that we're doing today with details and giving you space to actually work with your team on your own um, workshop.
And there we go.
I I'll just give them a few more minutes to scan. I see people scanning.
>> Yeah.
>> All right.
Okay. This is Okay. Okay. Okay. All right. All right.
So, as I as we introduce ourselves again, my name is Nario Kasam. I actually I'm from Mexico and the Middle East. So, tea plays a big role for me.
Uh my favorite tea is a which is a combination of black tea, zaparon, cardamon, and milk. Uh, so we wanted to introduce ourselves for tea since that was our main activity. And Cesy, >> yeah. Hi, I'm Cesy Talda. I'm also from a small country. It's called Eratria.
It's in Africa. And um, tea is also a very big part of my culture as well. And I really like strong tea. No milk, nothing like that. And my favorite tea is actually Saddaf. It's a cardamom tea.
It's the best tea in the world.
And our third partner, she did couldn't make it today, but um Ashley adores tea.
She is the tea enthusiast in our building and she brings all types of tea. Her favorites are matcha, of course. She loves the green teas and the fresh and natural sense of uh fruit. Um so, okay. So, Packful, um Packful is a program that supports social innovation.
It teaches teens and educators how to socially innovate. We do this by aligning ourselves with the SDGs, the sustainable development goals of the United Nations. And in addition to that, we also align ourselves with our framework. Um there is a lot of design thinking frameworks out there. A lot of them are really good. The what makes us unique is ours is very short compared to all the other ones. So most of them are five to 12 steps. Ours is three. And in addition to that, we also believe that it's nonlinear because we don't think in linear matter, right? Some of us start with prototype first, work our way backwards. Some of us start with research first, then work towards prototype. So our framework allows you to do that to go from one thing to another. Um, in this session, I'm going to be a little bit more strategic and I'll let you know when I'm strategic and when I'm letting you to explore. So that way you have a feel of that.
Okay. Um, one more.
Thank you. All right. So, I wanted to make sure you have a clear understanding of what social innovation is and change maker. So, a social innovation is somebody that has a ma mindset that is very exploratory, right? They have the courage to explore things that have not been explored. They have the heart and the curiosity to look for information that is out there. It's pretty much every single one of you in this room.
you made it here for a reason. You wanted to see what was out there. And so what it would that mindset having that mindset is one of the pieces that you need for social innovation and to really be a change maker. You need a framework that is going to allow you to dig deep into what you're curious about.
It's going to let you really support that human aspect that you want to connect and it's going to go ahead and let you have a product at the end that's going to make a ripple positive effect in the world and that's what makes you a change maker. U so that's why we connect those two things together social innovator and change maker.
Um in our program we provide this in different formats. So we have a full curriculum that is online. So, and you all will be able to access that online free of charge. It is more on the educationbased. So, the language that is used is very um kind of teacherdriven in a format. Um but it has all the videos and all the breakdowns that you would have seen here today, but you have access to them online. All you need for right now is a Google account in order to register on that. And you'll find that in our website, which is pathful.org. I have it at the bottom there, but it's also on your worksheet.
There's a QR code there that you can go through it as well uh to our website.
The other thing that we offer if you are local to the San Antonio I mean the San Diego area is um um impactful labs. So we do workshops with either teachers or with uh uh youth um that just works through the design thinking process and we can make them very personalized like one of them we did was on AI policy. Um so innovation can happen anywhere right?
Um, I've already talked about the Jacob's Teen Innovation Challenge that we're super excited about it. We do this annually. So, it's something that you can register for next year already. We we start registration uh at the end of June. Um, and it goes all the way until April of next year. So, you have a lot of time to work on your innovation. Um, talk to your teams, talk to your educators, meet with us. Um, again, and we have a lot of prizes. And yes, they're all they are cash prizes. So, just want to give a heads up on that.
And finally, the last thing that we are creating this year, if you are an educator or if you want to convince your teachers that they need to do this, we are opening a certificate for impactful educators, it's going to be virtual online where they learn about the design thinking process, the STGS.
Um, so it's another way to get that curiosity and avenue going in the classrooms. Okay. Uh, next slide please.
Okay, so for today's 90 minute session or a little bit less, um, I'm going to be very structured just because I have 90 minutes to do this entire thing. So number one, I'm telling you what SDG we're going to work on. It's going to be SG3. You're not going to explore that.
You have to use T. So that's that's a restriction that you have. Um, but we are going to walk you through every single one of those steps. So you're going to go through the understand phase, ideulate phase, prototype phase, and a little bit of the pitch. So you'll have all those phases covered.
Okay. So everything starts with a question.
So next slide, please.
There we go. Okay. Um, this might be a little bit hard to see, but you have it in your handout, so it's going to be a little bit easier. this way. So, we're going to start with the ID8 phase, which is technically in the middle. Um, because we're starting with a PE with the main question of what we're going to be designing today. Um, so you're designing a tea, but what type of tea?
Are you designing a calming tea, a tea that is going to energize you, a tea that's going to just refresh you? Um, maybe you have another idea. I want a tea that's going to really make me uh warm. I'm actually freezing out here.
So, um I'm looking for a lot of warmth.
So, right now, what I want you guys to do is try more or less to talk to the people around you to see if you're all thinking of the same tea. You might have to move around right now. So, that way you start identifying the team of what type of tea you want to build. And then in your worksheet, may I borrow this? In your worksheet, at the very top, it has the question, the how might we question, and it gives you a little space there to decide what type of tea you're going to be building. Okay? So, I'll give you a good five minutes to go around, talk to people. You can just sit by the people around you if that makes it easier for you, but try to form a team because you are going to be working in teams. Okay?
I'm doing >> I don't have that. That's the only thing I don't have. I'm sorry. Um I'll ask them and see if they have something.
>> You have to talk about what kind of >> Yes. Yeah. So you can make you can write it down and you're going to write it down on this first. Are you in a >> main focus right now? Okay. Just your question.
>> I think there's some girls over here.
Maybe you can join their team or here.
>> I know. Some of them don't have them. So >> yeah, like I know she was asking for one and there was one more person on the other side asking for one. Okay, perfect.
>> They're going to go get you a pencil, too. I'll find you in a few minutes.
Yeah.
>> Hi. Do do you guys mind telling me what tea you guys are thinking of making?
>> Karak.
>> Karak tea.
>> Karak tea is a black tea >> uh with a little bit of evaporated milk.
>> So it's cooked for like 15 minutes and then added some sugar. It's really uh famous in the Middle East. Comfort comfort.
It's kind of people drink it instead of >> Oh, really? Yeah. Tea is really good.
Sorry.
So, you're planning to make a tea that comforts you like your in your team or >> Yeah.
>> Do you want an energizing tea or calm tea or like >> one and then one more?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Maybe you can try making it.
I don't think we have all of this stuff, but totally try.
>> We're just going to need it.
>> Oh, yeah. We have the >> Thank you.
Are you going to tell us?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Of course.
>> And I'll hand you these. So, they told me they were going to do them back. This is the easiest way to like metaphorically like explain the design thinking process because in actuality you know we give the students like a problem like they choose an SG and they choose a problem or issue that's really important to them like um water insecurity or something like that and then they actually use a design thinking process to figure out a solution and this way it's just an easy way to like >> I love dynamic and I love that you guys are already writing some of you are even picking me how you want to achieve your first like if you want it to be comforting or energizing like you're not going to have to an energizing tea you don't want to have like a tea with no no caffeine right and so you're trying to think of finding pro like using a problem like >> have an idea what type of tea you're thinking about >> yeah Yeah. I love it.
>> Huh?
>> And well, flavor, you're going to in your group, you're going to decide what what end goal you want to achieve. What what do you want your cheetah to make you feel?
>> Yeah. But and you Yeah.
Yeah.
>> Huh?
>> Eritria.
Really?
>> Mhm. I was born in Ash.
>> Oh, really?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
in >> as awesome.
>> So, do you know >> Can you go back to slides real quick so I can have him scan something?
>> Oh, it's okay. It's okay.
>> I used to and then I lost it when I came here.
>> I know. I can understand it. But >> three, two, >> no. At home cuz they wanted to teach me English for school here. They thought it was very important. But >> um No, I just need to go back to my flight. So >> my parents Oh, yeah. Yes. They were born and raised.
>> Back to my regular slide.
>> Yeah. After the question though, >> my dad is like, >> "Sorry, too." And my mom is like >> like, "Let's just forget the videos at this point. I just really want my slides.
Mhm.
>> When you go forward, more forward, >> more forward.
Uh there I need to start there.
>> Mhm.
One back.
Okay. All right. Okay.
>> If I can get your attention again.
Sorry.
>> Oh, that's Yeah, that's smart. Two.
one.
>> Thank you so much. Trust me, you're gonna have a lot of time to talk. Um, so right now we're going to move into the understand phase. And the understand phase is all about really getting to know that problem that you guys just wrote down. Um, there is a lot of steps that happen in there from research to interviewing >> to addressing misconceptions that you might have. So, the first thing I want you to do is quietly on your own for about a minute, there's a line on your worksheet, >> I may borrow. Thank you. Under the section right here, there's a line that says list.
>> I just need one. You don't need to list all of them unless you want to. just one misconception or one thing that you think you know about >> calming teas, refreshing teas, whatever it is that you decided, just one thing you think you know about. Okay, I'll give you about a minute to write that down.
Are they are they everything? I was talking to I've been talking to just you know this is weird.
Can you go to the next slide?
Okay. Now that you all have one misconception, you would go now and technically do some research. So, now it's time that you either go through the library or you go through the Google search or your new all-time favorite AI tool that you feel that you want to use for research.
Please don't do that unless you're going to unless you're really good about rechecking your references, okay? Um or you're using Proplexity. At the very least, use that one. Um and ask for the citation so you can verify the research.
Um, but with that in mind, um, since we don't have time to do all that, I created a document for you. Um, so feel free to scan the document that's up there so you can read it. It's only about two pages long. It's nothing nothing very, very long. And it just gives you some information about team.
Feel free to discuss it with your group members. Um, when you scan it, it's going to force you to make a copy. Just make a copy. Um, it's covered.
>> Is there any way to remove the internal Hello.
Hi.
And I'll give you about three to four minutes to read it.
>> It's It isn't Really?
>> Oh, really?
Maybe.
Cuz Are they able to open it?
Maybe it's cuz it should force you to make a copy. Let's see.
>> I think the car is still covered. A little corner.
>> Um, no. It still should pick it up. Let me see what it tells you. Oh, there.
>> But it doesn't work.
>> That is weird for all of you.
>> I have a some paper copies. So, if you guys don't mind sharing.
>> Yeah, me too.
If you guys don't mind sharing, I have like three copies of it. So, yeah. So, it's the same document. Um, if you guys don't mind sharing between you all and then if I can just get them back whenever you guys are done.
memory.
>> Oh yeah, we have >> What type of tea are you guys trying to make?
>> Just let me know which ones do you want and then I have a com.
>> So, are you researching now to see which one is the best fit?
>> Yeah. Yeah, I I Yeah, >> I've worked without before. So, yeah, it's not >> I love how some of you are already writing your own notes without me even telling you. So, that's great. Thank you so much for starting to do that. Um, there is a section in your understand where you can just write notes about what you research. Anything that you found interesting and you just want to write it down, go right ahead.
I don't think there's going to be enough cuz I think there's more. There's six of them and there's more than six.
I'll figure it out. I will I will get to that when I get to that. I might ask maybe if they have like big cups or something and then we can just use a big cup as a practice round.
All right. Are you almost ready? We're about to get to that one. I'll pass it.
>> Thank you.
>> Oh, thank you so much. Thank you.
Okay. All right. So, we want to make sure that you're working with a group if at all possible. Okay, that's good.
They've already confirmed this one. So, they worked on misconceptions or assumptions that they might have and now they were reading a document. if you scan that. I don't know if you got access to it. Um, and then we're just researching basically. So, we're in the research process of the design thinking right now.
>> Yeah. You should be able to just make a copy.
Yes. There you go. It's not long. It's just a few pages and then Yeah. And then you'll just write any three things that seem of interest to you.
Do we have enough cards to Should I just tell them to like if you have to move into like maybe a bigger group?
>> You can. Yeah. Just write whatever like response to your group.
That's what I'm telling.
ask for like one group member to raise their hand so that way I know how many teams there are.
>> Okay, how is everybody feeling? Thumbs up if you feel like you're done. You're ready to move on. I see a thumbs up here.
Thumbs up here.
Okay, a few more minutes. I'm going to give you about one more minute before I'm calling the time. Okay, >> that time for a minute.
I think we have them.
I think I see some tapes.
All right, that was time. And no worries, there's still talking taking place. It's okay. U but now that you've done, you've looked at your misconceptions. You probably addressed some of them, confirmed some of them because I heard some of you say, "I told you so." Yes, that's okay. You can confirm assumptions. You did some research. But remember, your innovation is for the people. So if you want an innovation for the people, you should be going to the people, right? You need to be doing interviews. You need to be getting their information. So guess what you're doing next?
>> You're going to do interviews. I'll have walk you through this activity. Um I'll be passing out materials. Okay.
>> Okay. So, we're going to pass out these cards to you and they have questions on them. And what you're going to do is your tea is for your group. You decided what you wanted it to be. Whether it's com comforting or calming, whatever it was, you did your research and now you're interviewing your own teammates to see what we should change, what a a person prefers. And we're going to do these these questions. You're going to first start out with the ice breaker questions because, you know, just to break the ice and then you're and and then you're going to one person is going to interview um another person. You're going to sit down and listen. That's the importance of this um activity is you're listening.
They have the cards have little tips on the bottom of the best way to listen to the person you're interviewing. So, you're going to go around, one person has a card, you interview the next person, and then that person will pick up another card. There's multiple cards.
There's different types of questions.
Um, and then you'll interview the next person, and you're really trying to listen and take notes to see if anything changes if you decide, hey, maybe we should make this a little bit more energizing or anything that changes. And you're that's the goal of this activity.
So, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
>> We don't want to dictate too much on how you want to run your interview. So we are just giving you the questions. Feel comfortable in moving around the questions. They not in any specific order. Now I gave out seven groups, seven packages. So I think we have one extra team than the seven. So if you don't mind going with another team for the interview because it's okay. It it works. You're all interviewing about tea and getting that experience. So it doesn't really matter if you're not just with your team. Okay. Um, and I'm gonna because innovation is about the people, I am going to give you a good solid seven minutes to work on this. I really want you to listen. Um, and like Sassy said, start with your start questions.
They're funny. They're kind of fun. It kind of breaks the ice, especially if you're sitting among strangers. If you're like me and an introvert and you're like, "Please don't talk to me right now." It's kind of the attitude I always have. Just start with those questions. It makes it easier. Okay. All right. And if you have any questions, like Jesse said, we'll just walk around.
Set timer for Why not ice?
Uh, do we have to ask each other questions or like we can do it? If you want, if you guys want to do it like a couple kind of thing, you can do it, too. I've seen teams breaking them up in different formats. Um, and you can do it in any case that you like. What I do want you to do is just go through the questions and look at them because they're different colors and there's a reason for that. Um, so just an FYI on that.
Thank you.
The next question is when someone stress is your first thing yes finally sure whatever or I need coffee flowers and to cut you right now at 2:30 on a Friday.
You see it again. If your class had a vending machine that would dispense feelings instead of snacks, what will you press right now and what will you press at 2:30?
It depends.
What the difficulties?
Can I go first? And oh, I was going to say if it dispense feelings for me right now, I want courage because I I I don't like speaking in front of people. So, I definitely need courage. And if it's a Friday after school, I think I would want energy cuz I think by the end of Friday, I'll be so tired that I just want to fall asleep when I get home and instead of enjoying my weekend. So that's what I think.
>> What about you?
>> Um actually I took my mind instead of happy.
Do you mind me asking what type of tea you guys want to make?
>> So, you want it to be like fantastic like natural also because yeah, I understand. Yeah.
>> And do you want it to like taste like something like floral or do you want it to be strong?
>> I love it.
strong all the way.
>> Yeah. I love these dancers. Fantastic.
>> Oh, yeah. And so when you guys were asking your questions, did anything pop up that was like, "Oh, the energy. Are you guys all college students?"
>> Oh, those were very fun to write.
>> Yeah.
>> That's nice. I hope you guys get that energy. Have you guys researched? Did Did any like specific thing pop up like a type of tea?
>> Rosemary.
>> Mhm.
>> Yeah.
Did you guys look at the bases too?
It's completely fine. We have um three bases. We have green tea, Robus tea, and black tea. You probably want to avoid green tea because it doesn't have any caffeine. So, Robus is probably I think it's the strongest. Um, yeah. So, I definitely recommend Robus or black tea, guys.
But yes, and then you'll get to talk more about that through the ID.
>> Well, good luck. Yeah, of course.
Can you get Oops.
Can you take the extra ingredients that we have and just put them on the table on the other side? Um like the turmeric ones and stuff.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah. Just so they have them out there.
You have about 30 seconds to wrap up your interview.
>> Do you mind if I can get the next slide?
>> Uh, one more.
Yeah, one more right there. Okay. Yeah.
Thank you.
>> Okay. If I can get your attention in three, two, one.
I love interviews. I learned so much about everybody just going around and hearing your stories. I want to talk a little bit about the questions that you guys saw. So there were some specific questions that have a star. We call them ice breakers. And if you go into our curriculum, it actually helps you identify the different types of questions that you need to write when you conduct an interview because you want to have people feeling comfortable in order for them to really talk to you.
So, you have to have those fun out of the norm questions that don't seem to make any connection to your research, but it's just something to relax them to know that they're humans and you're human and we're listening to one another. Then you have the questions that are very targeting to what you want to learn about them. And then you have questions that you might come back after the research and add them. Right? So there is some questions that you might have to come back and say we need to do round two of interview and these are the additional questions that I have. Um again it's all because we're designing with the people not for the people. So this if anything you if you have to do anything when it comes to a design thinking process interview should be the top thing that you do um regardless of what project you're working on. Okay.
All right. Can I get the next slide, please?
Can I get the next slide, please?
Oh, one more. One more. Okay. Right.
Okay. So, now we're going to move into back to the ID8 phase. So, the ID8 phase, we did it at the very beginning when we wrote the question. Um, and I wanted to start with the question to kind of give you guys a direct way of looking at things. Most people like to start with the research so they have a bunch of ideas before they narrow down their question. Uh, one key thing when you come up with your question, your entire team needs to know that question because that way everybody's looking for the same thing are trying to answer the exact same thing and there's no waste time doing other things that are not related to the question or the problem you guys are trying to address. So, we're coming back now to the idea phase.
And that's why I said our curriculum is very fluid because you go back and forth um and it allows for that. And now we're going into coming up with ideas of TE's.
What would be a good tea? Now, in your um handout that I gave you, if you mind if I borrow your handout really quick.
Thank you. Um my is going to go around picking up the cards in a minute. So um but in your handout in the very middle it says ID8 and I give you two columns one in green and one in red. The idea behind it is that there isn't a time where you say I have no ideas. You either have good ideas, crazy idea, wild ideas or very bad ideas. Right? Um, and sometimes when you're stuck, it's easier to work on the bad ideas first because you know that those are not going to work and you just want everybody to kind of identify to start. So that's why I wrote uh yummy teas and brewing bunders that you just do not want to mix together. Um, so I gave you time to do that. Now, I'm going to show the next slide that has the different TE's that we have, but you're more than welcome for one member or two members of your team to stand up and look at the table to see what TE's we have if that's going to make your idea easier because I'm sorry, I would love to bring all the TE's that we possibly can imagine, but there's no space for that. Okay. Um, so it will be up on the screen. Thank you so much. So, it's up on the screen in case you can't see it. Or if you want to stand up and look at it and get inspired, you can do that. I'm going to give you about four minutes to write down as many ideas as you possibly can.
Okay? It's just ideas. Go ahead. I can take the card to set timer for four minutes.
>> Yeah, you can stand up to either read there or go to the table and look at the teeth.
Pick these up from me. Thank you so much. They did so good.
>> Thank you.
>> I can get the Thank you.
I don't have peppermint for me.
>> I'm sorry.
Um, spearmint has more of um I want to say more of like a I want to say yabena, but that's not in English.
Um, like a chamomile kind of feel to me versus peppermint. It doesn't have that.
>> I want to say so. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> What do you guys >> You guys wanted calming, right? You guys wanted a calming tea, right?
>> So, what are you guys thinking about doing?
>> What tea are you thinking about doing?
Black tea is like >> Yeah, both these are >> tea or like >> Yeah.
Mhm. That sounds really good. Green tea, rose petals, and lavender sounds really good.
>> I have a good question. What are the properties of their >> properties? Like >> like what do they do?
>> It Oh, this is it's kind of the same as black tea. It's energizing. It has caffeine. These two both have caffeine.
It's not caffeinated.
>> Yeah. The green tea is the only one that's on.
>> Robus Robus tea is also like the strongest I would say.
>> So it's like black sugar.
>> Mhm.
in my grandmother.
>> You want what?
>> You want to do one face and then you could do like as many. Okay. Okay. So, we can keep the base.
>> Yeah. What are what type of tea are you trying to make?
>> We're trying to relax but with lavender and maybe a little bit of lemon.
>> So, which do you >> I would definitely recommend the green tea cuz these two have these two are have caffeine in them. So, you'll get energized like I think that's the opposite.
Yes, we have a lot. We have bay leaves and cinnamon.
really nice. Like we can look at the health benefits of each one.
>> Cool.
>> If I can get your attention in three, two, one. I'm >> going to do that one more time. It doesn't matter where you're at. You can stay where you're at. It's okay. I just want your attention. In five, >> four, 3, two, one. Okay. Here's what you're going to do next. Okay. Um, we have several teeth. I saw some of you standing up to try and get information, try to look at health benefits, try to ask questions.
Um there are base teas. So the way tea is designed is there is a strong base that you use first and then you add those additional herbs to make it taste different, feel different, things in that nature. We have the three main bases. We have the black tea, the rubus, and the sanchcha, which is the green tea basically. Um so we have all three bases, and we have quite a bit of those.
So when you're making your tea bag, those will be the biggest components in that tea bag. So those will have like two, three scoops, sometimes even four versus the other ones, it's only going to be like a hint of vanilla or a hint of anise or a hint of blah blah. So just be aware of that. Um, now here's what we're going to do just so we can make sure. Number one, you need to have a recipe written down before you go up there. Okay. So, make sure you know this is how many scoops we're going to put of this. This is how many scoops we're going to put of that. Once you get up there, you're going to have a tea bag and you're going to put everything in that little bag and we'll give you a kettle. Now, we are short on kettles. I have six and there's 17. So, I'm going to be creative in a few minutes to try and figure out what to do with my last team because the idea behind it, if you see the little cups over there, you're going to go around and have other team members taste it and give you feedback.
So, the idea is you're collecting feedback. You're going to throw that first tea back away and guess what?
You're going to do a second one, and then you're going to go around. So, I want to make sure each team does at least two bags because that's the whole process and that is the biggest issue when it comes to design thinking is going out to that community after you spend hours or days or years on this beautiful project and you go out and they say, "No, it doesn't work." Okay.
Can you be more specific? What doesn't work about it? what what didn't you like about it? Blah blah blah blah and take that feedback and do something even more positive with it. Right? Um questions on this steps that we're going to do right now. Okay. Uh please don't have the entire team go up there because uh it does get a little bit crowded. So maybe like two members at the most. Um I would appreciate that. All right. Hi.
>> Go ahead and continue and you'll have about 10 minutes for this whole thing.
So, I'll be done.
>> Yeah. Have you decided with your team what exactly you're going to put in in it >> with the scoops and everything?
>> Do you have the tea bags? Okay. So, make sure that you're putting Oh, just put it in here. You can just throw it and pull it in there cuz it just makes it easier in our case right now.
>> I got it. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. And then we can just pull it in here for him or put it back.
>> And these are your bases over here.
Yeah, I think this can just like a little bit left.
>> I think let's see this because I think >> so it doesn't like overwhelm that.
>> Yeah, >> and then let me ask >> you want green tea. There's a scoop of green tea in here if you want to use it.
>> Yeah. Yeah. By any chance, do you guys have like >> Did you Did you decide exactly what you want that we could use?
>> We only have >> Can I get you for that last tea?
>> And do you need any more hot water? I did >> because I don't know yet.
But I'll let you know.
>> You probably want to do two scoops of the green tea and however many scoops of the lavender.
This is his trial and error.
>> Lavender is very strong.
You're like, "Come on, give me the answer."
>> Um, they're going to bring me They're about They're about a 8 oz kind of cup. So, we'll just give them two of them for that one.
>> Okay.
>> I know. I'm like trying to be very careful about it.
>> And then Yes.
>> Thank you so much. No, it's okay. It's okay. I might need more, but I'll let you know.
>> Okay. All right.
>> Do we pour like the hot water for them or do they do it?
>> They can do it themselves except for the kids.
>> Yeah, I'll do that.
>> And you know what? It might be easier if we give them these.
>> Okay.
>> So, give them one first and then we'll give them the second one. But what kind of >> rub is do you know? Um, it's not black. It's like a level below it. So, it's not as it's not caffeinated. It's not faffinated at all. Um, but it's not as clean as the sun, which is the white tea, the green tea.
And then I can start seeping it for you guys. Going to close it.
>> Make sure we close the back.
or actually no.
>> Then I'll pour some hot water for you guys.
>> Then you hold it and let it sit for about like two to three minutes, >> I believe. And then pour them some into a little cup and you guys can try it and you can have other people try it as well.
>> Yeah.
You guys, how about you guys go sit down and then let's get you guys >> some cups. Do you want to get one for your mom?
>> Oh, fantastic. What's But do I go to a school or university?
>> I do. I go to um high school in Inas school. Do you know?
>> Yeah, it's a it's a small private school.
>> Oh, fantastic. I'll let them know. Maybe you guys can compete next year.
>> Yes, that'd be great.
>> See what stuff you guys think can create.
>> I know. When you said that you had workshops for people, I was like, >> yes, we do. And then you get to visit the University of San Diego.
>> Beautiful camp. Oh, it's it's called a lot of it's like specifically um the only tea I can drink.
>> I don't know.
And it's really strong in >> that it's it's really good. It's actually like a brand you can find it in a lot of like >> but you never know with schools or organizations or something like brought something from college to Cali that came and from Tijuana that came. So like >> Yeah. Yeah. So we have like some workshops that >> we do them all day long but we make sure that they like they have time to eat and >> Oh on campus or >> most of them we do them on campus. Um, we've been asked once or twice to do it off campus and we have, but we kind of prefer on campus cuz, you know, it's Well, not just that, it's just the beauty of the university. It brings I don't know, brings something out.
>> Which one is it? Is it USC or UCSB?
>> USC.
>> Yeah, USC. It's It's actually um a Catholic university. So, >> yes, I always see when I'm driving to the airport, I always see the building on the hill.
>> Yeah, you can't miss it. You really can't miss it.
I should.
>> Yes.
>> Yes, you should.
>> Let us know if we mind if I try some water. So, >> Oh, good. I love it.
Smells really good. You can really smell the lavender.
>> For those that already have their teas, just make sure you seep for like about a minute or two before you start testing it. Um, just an FYI, >> there's a lot of lavender. Lavend I like I told you you guys remember lavender.
>> You guys bet little cups already.
>> I know it's gorgeous, but it's so >> No, don't tell me.
Don't tell me. lavendery.
>> I like little like >> I'm always wrong, but I still like >> lavender and maybe a little bit more rose petals to get it nice and even.
>> Ginger. Ginger is also very strong. So, I would also do a little bit of ginger.
Yeah.
>> But it's really good. I love green tea.
We're doing good with water. I'm really impressed.
>> This is the part where it's like it all comes together. Yeah.
>> Love it.
I'm gonna go grab my cup so I can start.
>> You're ready?
You got to post it. You got to post it.
May I >> just very little?
>> Definitely need some sweetness.
>> Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
>> I like it though.
>> And what are you guys trying to Is it energizing or >> soothing?
>> Your base.
Do you put >> Oh, you can throw away this, but you can reuse this for the hot water and I can pour it out for you.
>> One of them I think it would need higher temperatures to diffuse it aromas.
>> Is it the lavender?
>> Vanilla. Do you have vanilla in it?
>> Is definitely there. You can taste the other one.
>> Vanilla. Vanilla. That's the one I kept thinking I was >> the one that you can't kind of taste the >> I can smell the vanilla though. And you can really smell the vanilla.
>> No. What is it?
>> Oh. Oh, >> rose petals is very >> very faint.
>> I know.
>> And the vanilla is the sweet one that I feel like that's why I was like sweet.
It's perfect.
>> I think I don't know. For me, I I kind of wanted to taste it with more vanilla.
>> Really? I was thinking adding something else. I think it has the perfect vanilla. I think something different than rose petals. something to like >> like maybe like a kick. So like maybe like a pepper or like a ginger >> um to bring that little bit more of a kick but very mild.
>> Yeah, very like if you're going to do ginger, not too much cuz ginger is very strong.
>> You might want to go around.
>> Just like a tiny little kick.
>> But the robus and the vanilla pair very well to be calming, like soothing.
>> Yeah. So, you put the additives in one bag and then there should be a tea kettle.
>> How do you do it?
>> Okay. So, um Yeah. Yeah. So, you have that one. You put it on there. Perfect.
>> Yes. And then you add your water on here.
>> Yep. And then when you're done testing it, you can take off your tea bag, finish the finish drinking whatever is in there, and then do another tea bag and do it again.
>> Okay. My question was basically, are we going to put uh the base together with the additives?
>> Yes.
>> Yes. Everything together in one bag.
>> Do you guys mind if I try yours?
>> Like really water down though.
>> What is it? Like don't tell me what's in it yet, but what are you guys trying to aim to >> centering? You guys bring >> If you haven't done your first run so far, you should be close to like >> the star. You're done with your first run. You should be going around letting other people taste.
>> Um, I know Tessy and I are very excited, so we're more than happy to go around, too. Um, and then start getting to build your second round.
>> Oh, wow.
>> It's not too strong.
>> I'm glad we normally with the little little kiddos with them. so they can handle the water and everything. Cuz right now I told you guys >> I would say focus on like maybe two or three main things because all of those things maybe paired together maybe like unbalance it a bit. So focus on like two big ones.
>> I think keeping the lavender where it is is very nice and I think it does get you really centered.
>> Yeah.
>> But yeah like Can I also try?
>> Did you guys put pepp or ginger?
>> Lemon grass and ginger.
>> Ginger >> and green.
>> I would do less ginger or >> like a pinch of ginger.
>> I got lemongrass. It's kicking. One of them is like really >> it's ginger. That's for sure.
>> Ginger, >> I think >> cuz it when it seeps for a long time, it really really helps. Like it's ginger.
You got to use like the very little >> very little.
>> Okay.
>> Or make sure that you don't leave the bag in there for too long and pull it out.
>> That was a kicker.
>> Wow. Ginger. The ginger always gets me the wow.
>> Everyone wants to put in ginger.
>> Oh, really?
>> Yeah.
>> I'm like I don't mind ginger tea, but I always feel like that's a medicine tea for me. Like >> a lot of the times we put it in coffee.
>> Coffee?
>> Yeah, cuz we when we like make traditional coffee, we grind the beans.
>> That's true.
>> And then you just put in some like a pinch of ginger.
>> That is true. I forgot about that.
Yeah, I don't like it. That's why.
>> I'm not a big fan of ginger.
>> This is going good.
It's like Did you hear this? Oh, You should be in the process of making your second pot or getting ready to make your second pot of tea.
If you didn't get feedback, Cesy and I are ready to give you feedback. We are more than happy and excited to try teas.
I know. I love I love >> Yeah, it's And that's why we do it because every single culture in the world has something with tea like bringing people together.
>> Do you guys mind if I try some?
>> And the fun part like if you normally with the little little kids we do iced tea so that way they don't have to worry about the hot water. So it's kind of fun. What did you change about it?
>> Yeah, we always have a different thing.
So, a lot of fun.
>> Oh, wow. Oh, wow.
>> How much ginger did you guys How much ginger did you guys put into it?
>> We tried to do a little.
>> Oh, okay. Like half a scoop or >> a little scoop?
Maybe it's cuz I got the bomb.
>> Yeah, ginger is very strong. Especially if you let it sit for a long time, you'll only get ginger. But you get a lot of ginger ginger.
>> Maybe a little. Yeah, ginger. You have to be very very delicate about Yeah. But it's good. I really like how you lessened the lavender though and added more rose petals.
How is it going over here?
>> Yeah, I think ginger is a nice add to your tea.
>> Set timer for two minutes.
>> Ginger. The ginger already like threw my palette out like I need a black tea here.
Excuse me. Could you go to the next slide for me, please? Excuse me.
>> Oh, can you go to the next slide for me, please? Oh, perfect. Uh, >> the mango juice is ready for >> Oh. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
>> Um, one more. More more. One more.
Oh, one more.
One more. Perfect. Thank you.
>> Okay, you all have about one minute before I ask you all to go back to your chairs. This time I will be asking you to go back to your chairs.
I I had to get some mango juice to get the ginger.
>> I think also the combination of ginger and lemon rush is not a good idea for me. Like >> that's too much medicine for me.
If I can start getting people to go back to their chairs at this time, please.
If you can all go back to your chairs at this time, stop wherever you're at in the process so I can close down.
So, if everybody can go back to their chairs in five, four, three, >> if I can get you all to go back to your chairs at this time.
It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. If I can get you all to go back to your chairs at this time, I would appreciate it. We come to sing.
>> Um, you can take it with you now.
>> But if I can get you back to your chairs and you can just sample it over there.
All right.
All right. Back to your chairs, you guys. I'll let you finish that later.
Right now, I need you back to your chairs. Okay, you can hold on to your baggie. That's fine. All right. Perfect.
Thank you so much. Okay, so I saw a lot of you going around. I appreciate if you took the initiative to stand up and get out of your group and talk to somebody else. If you welcomed us, I appreciate that as well. Um, make a note for yourself on that. I know you all were excited about making the tea, but make a note that maybe it took an extra effort to stand up to go to another group versus allowing for people to come because that's something also when you're building your own project, you start realizing what is your comfort level and how much discomfort do you have to have to get that feedback, right? So, I'm not going to spend too much time on the pitch because there's a lot of components that go to building a pitch.
You created this amazing product. People gave you feedback. You followed up with that feedback, recreated the product, and now you're ready to present that idea to the world. And in order to do that, you have to speak their language, right? It has to have a name that is relevant to the culture that you're trying to give it to, right? It has to have relevance to the people that are going to be using it. It should have a story of why you actually build it. You should have data. You should have information. There's a lot of things that go into this pitch. And guess what?
It shouldn't be more than 10 minutes at the most. Uh when we do the Jacob's Teen Innovation Challenge, our pitches are no more than six minutes. And so we expect the team to do all that in six minutes.
Uh and they've done amazing job so far.
So I'm excited about it. But for our case, I know some of you started writing your names of your tea or your branding, but you might want to reconsider now, right? After you got some feedback, after you tasted it, consider what would you name that tea that you created.
Think of the people that would be interested in this tea. And then think of the feeling, the emotion that it gave you and might give the people. So, I'll give you about a minute to discuss with your group. What would you name that te?
>> Are you going to have them present? Like we don't have time for that.
>> Yeah, >> I'm barely going to have time for send time for a minute.
I wanted to give time to make their own tea to go, but I don't know. Like you want to check how crazy >> do they have like a break for like lunch or something?
>> I don't know.
>> Maybe they we could like leave it out for them to or >> I don't know. Go check the table. See, we even have ingredients cuz if we ran out already, we're just going to All All right, that was time. Do I have any brave souls that want to share the name of their tea with us?
>> Tranquility.
>> Oh, tranquility. I love it. Nice, simple, clean, straightforward.
>> Anybody else want to? Yeah, go ahead.
>> The reverse emotion tea.
>> Oh, I love this one. The reverse emotion tea. They really focus on emotions in this team. So, I'm very excited about that. Love it. Anybody else?
>> Yeah.
>> Ours is and it translates to the attack.
>> I love Wow. Is that for like a shot in the morning?
So, the tea is called and it it means the attack. Um, and it was like when I drank it, it was like a wakeup tea kind of thing. So, yes, kudos. It really aligns with your tea on that one. Love it. Well, thank you all for sharing. I'm going to move forward.
All right.
Final thoughts. Okay. So, in the final thoughts, what I want you guys to think of, and this is in your workbook, so you'll see it there. Um, it's not a full presentation and it's not in our curriculum yet either. So, this is very special to me and it's you are the only ones who have access to it. What this is is a resource for you to look back and see if your product once you pitched it out, once it's out there, is it really working? Is it really making a difference? And it's all focused back on the question that you wrote. How is it helping the people? Are you tracking that? What's the solution? Did it work?
Are you tracking that? And how are you collecting data? In your workbook, we actually give you ideas of how to do that for each different type, whether it's a service product or an actual uh product or a digital product. We give you ideas on how to track those informations and how to keep track with your uh groups, your focus groups or your um interviewees that you did. So, it's an easy thing to follow.
Um let's see.
Um oh in your workbook as well we gave you a section for managing your team because one of the biggest things when it comes to design thinking you are also a project manager. So give yourself kudos on this because it is kind of hard to keep teams going and keeping that collaboration form going. Um but we give you in every section whether is understand ideate or prototype we give you sections where you can go ahead and uh manage your teams set timers set dates uh tasks and things in that nature.
So the last thing I want to mention is we are from the Jacobs Institute for Innovation and Education located at the University in um of San Diego. Um, if you ever are in the San Diego area, we are known as one of the most beautiful campus in the US. And it is it's gorgeous. Um, that is a very very gorgeous campus. I will not lie on that.
Um, we like I said before, we work with educators and we work with uh youth. Um, if you ever need anything, our contact information or our website has a contact information and that's available in your worksheet that I gave you. There's a QR code there. One more.
Um, I did want to invite you all if you're interested in attending the awards ceremony for our Jacobs Institute for Jacob's Teen Innovation Challenge happening this coming Saturday. It's on Zoom, so you don't have to, you know, you can be in your PJs, you don't have to be on camera. Um, and you just get to see innovations from 22 different countries. Um, we have amazing winners.
I'm super excited. They don't know that they won. they won't know until that day of the event live. So, um it is at 8 in the morning because we are global. So, we try to get as many countries up and going. Um but in case you're interested, all you have to do is register um and we'll send you the Zoom link so you are able to attend and watch. Um thank you for joining us today. That was our presentation. Um I have three minutes if you have any questions. Um, otherwise we'll be out on the table for a little while. Um, and feel free to chat with Cassie or myself. Thank you so much you guys. Appreciate it.
Thank you to the University of San Diego for leading us in this amazing workshop.
I really we really appreciate the thinking process and how that will help us transition into advocacy.
So right at this time we are about to go into our lunch break. There are some great options just a slight walk down into Westwood or by India student union.
Um and then we have the collaboration hub outside the features from girls who lead by pimp with Pamela. We have the United Nations Institute of Training and Research and USD has a table out there also. So feel free to go check that out and learn about amazing organizations that are helping youth or ran by youth.
Thank you. We'll see you at 1:45.
and happy music.
