Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks in 60 Seconds

[00:00:00]2,000 years ago, people in what is now Ohio built something so precise, it still stops scientists cold. No steel tools, no written plans, no heavy machinery, just human hands, wooden instruments, and an astonishing understanding of geometry and the sky.

[00:00:15]These are the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, eight enormous sites spread across Ohio, all sitting along the rivers that feed into the Ohio River.

[00:00:22]The builders shaped the earth into giant circles, squares, and octagons, some of them covering more acres than you can easily walk in an afternoon. And here is the thing that gets you. These shapes align with the movements of the moon across an 18-year cycle. The people who built them were watching the sky for generations, passing that knowledge down, and then encoding it permanently into the landscape itself. They built between roughly the year 1 and the year 400. Then centuries passed. [music] Farmers plowed across many of the sites.
