Major film studios increasingly prioritize streaming releases over theatrical runs for certain blockbuster franchises, as demonstrated by Amazon's decision to release the live-action Voltron movie directly on Prime Video instead of theaters, which reflects broader industry shifts toward streaming-first distribution strategies.

Live Action Voltron Movie Officially Being Dumped On StreamingAdded:
There was great joy amongst the people when it got announced finally that a liveaction Voltron movie was coming. And to make it even better, my boy Henry Henry Cavl was going to be starring in it and it was going to be in theaters.
Yes. I mean, I've been waiting since I was a kid. I mean, it's not like my most anticipated IP, but I've been waiting since I was a kid to see Voltron in live action on the big screen.
>> This picture has me. I'm in.
I don't think that's actually a production shot from >> I don't care. I'm still in.
>> I'm still in.
>> Yeah.
>> But then came the reports that in a change of direction, Amazon had decided instead to dump Voltron to dump Henry directly to streaming. Now, after that report came out, there had been whispers lately. There had been some rumors going around that Amazon was going to change directions again and actually put it out theatrically. And those whispers and rumors started to go around that maybe they're going to put it out theatrically again. Well, no more.
Take that hope of yours and shove it down a hole because there is nothing but darkness. Yes. According to this report here, the liveaction Voltron, it's now official. Uh Amazon has come out and said, "Yeah, it's it's going right to streaming." On a bit of sad news out of Amazon's upfront presentation is that they have confirmed now what was already known that the upcoming liveaction Voltron movie will not be going theatrical. According to GVN, the Henry Caval le title is still planning to make its debut on Prime Video as an original where the company likely hopes it will become a Roadhouse and Coming to America 2 or the Tomorrow Wars sized hits.
Amazon has made big strides in their theatrical push the last year or so, especially with huge successes like Project Hail Mary. Uh, but this was reportedly always intended for a straight to streaming release. That is not true. It was not always intended for a straight to to home video release. No marketing material has been released thus far beyond a logo. And you know, I I heard those whispers that they were going to change directions and put it theatrical, and I'm like, "Yeah, of course they are. That that makes sense."
Like, we didn't talk about it on the show because I didn't know that I believed the reports yet, but I mean, I was in my heart in my heart, Rob, that is quickly becoming a cold and frigid place. Um, I I wanted to believe that that's because it made sense. I mean, especially with them just having the big success with Project Hail Mary. It's not blowing up the box office, but everybody is loving The Sheep Detectives. Uh they've had some good success with their theatrical stuff. They have a lot of films coming out theatrical. And I kind of allowed myself, Rob, I made the mistake of believing in hope.
>> I let my h I let myself hope that maybe we'd see it. And again, listen, >> hope is a dangerous thing.
>> Yeah, it is. Somebody asked me a little while ago why we don't talk more about the Voltron movie. And I said, "Because I just don't believe it's going to be any good."
Like, and they asked, "Why do you believe it's going to be any good?" I said, "Because Amazon doesn't believe it's going to be any good." Because when you take a movie that's an IP like Voltron that is screaming to be to be experienced in a big theater with a bunch of people and all that kind of stuff that we've been waiting for a generation to watch and you say you're going to do a theatrical, then you get into the production of it and you go, "Oh, now we're not doing a theatrical."
What that is akin to me is that you just stood on top of a mountain and screamed to the people in the valley below, "We think our movie sucks." That's what Amazon did by dumping this straight to streaming. They basically stood on a mountain with a big giant side Jimmy the mouth of the Southartsized megaphone.
Bonus points for anybody who understood that reference.
And screamed, "We think our movie sucks." And of Rob, of course, my big question for any studio when something like this happens is if you don't believe in your movie, why should I? If you don't care about your movie, why should I care about And if you don't believe in your movie, why should I believe in it? And so, listen, it's Henry. It's Voltron. When Amazon drops it, I will of course check it out. 100% I will.
>> But it would have made a great movie meetup. But it would have made a really great Oh my god, it would have made a great movie meetup. And I I'm just really bummed out about this. And I Rob, I just got to say, I'm not choosing this. This is just what naturally has happened. I don't care about the movie anymore. I I'm not excited about it because Amazon's not excited about it.
So, I I will just kind of wait for the movie to happen. And when it happens, I'll watch it and hopefully it'll be great. But I'm not going to lie, I have zero enthusiasm for it. Anyway, uh Rob, you heard the whispers and now we see the report that it's definitely being dumped on streaming. I don't know what's your take away from this. This is not surprising to me. Uh, I am a big fan of Japanese science fiction and Japanese real and super robot shows from like the 70s and 80s. And Voltron was originally based on a Japanese animated series called Beast King Golion. And then what they do is they buy that and they bring it to America and they readapt the shows. They did that with things like Battle of the Planets, Space Battleship Yamato. Um, Robotech is of course >> I see Rob was a big one. They did >> big one. Roch to a degree they did that with live action too with Power Rangers.
>> Yeah. AB 100%.
>> The problem is the American sensibility is different than the Japanese sensibility. And you know, I was just talking about this on my own YouTube show about a sense of whimsy.
We we tend to look at these things for American audiences and we kind of kittify them. You know, like Battle of the Planets famously had things removed from it that dealt with religion and they couldn't air it in certain places.
By the way, would it surprise you to know that I can name every member of GeForce Battle of the Planets?
>> No.
>> It is Mark, it is Jason, it is Princess.
And it is Kop. And it is Tiny. Tiny, who was the pilot of the Phoenix. The Phoenix, which had one weapon, by the way, which was a big shiny red button that just fired their missiles. And it was a big dramatic thing in every show.
was like fire the miss and they'd open up the little glass thing just big red button and Tiny would hit the big red button and shoot there they are >> the Phoenix they by the way these are great character designs the Phoenix I love the Phoenix is a great ship and they've made I used to own a really great diecast model of the Phoenix that had it it had the the flaming thing this plastic clear flame that you could set it into so it's in flame mode but anyway >> also known as gacha man >> yes that's that's the original Japanese name. Um, you know a lot about I didn't realize that you >> I tell you, man. I I used to love that >> Wow. You know, there's some great Metaccom six scale figures from that.
You should hook pick them up. But no, I I think that Voltron Look, I appreciate the idea of taking it and making it live action. I just don't think that there's many people in the United States that can that can do it correctly. You need the original creator involved like we have with One Piece. You know, I think One Piece works because the original creator was there and understands the assignment because it's really to to to thread that needle of tone. One Piece to me is a revelation. I would love the live action One Piece. I would love to see more Japanese shows adapted in such in such a way that they they maintain their honesty. Now, this is this is coming from me who went and saw the speed race speed racer, the new 4K restoration in IMAX a couple weeks ago at the Chinese theater with, by the way, a bunch of dieards. It was almost sold out and Emil Hers, Scott Porter showed up to support the uh the screen.
>> Yeah.
>> So, look, fingers crossed this Voltron's good cuz I can't wait to see it.
>> It's got a killer cast.
>> I know.
>> It's got a really good cast. They they I I again I just don't understand the logic. Like I just don't get the logic.
>> I think I think somebody looks at it who doesn't know what it is and goes, "What the hell is this? We can't put this in the theater." Wouldn't that have been wouldn't that have been a conversation that would have happened prior to deciding that it was going to be theatrical and then only after production on the movie started, they later changed directions to decide for it to go to >> I don't I know and and I have to tell you I watched one of the greatest animated shows I've seen in a long time um on Netflix uh from 2023. It's called Pluto and has ties to Astro Boy. It was awesome. And I'm like, this show is great. Maybe the climax didn't live up to the rest of the show, but I'm like, I want this to be so good, John, cuz I'm a fan of this kind of material. I love giant robots, you know? I'm a big um a fan of like Get a Robo and Get a Robo G and all Go work. I'd love to see this be good. Come on.
>> I I hope it's good. I mean, I again, if for no other reason than for my boy Henry, who I have a one-sided bromance with. Uh anyway guys, question is for you. What do you think about this? There was hope and then hope was shattered as Amazon has now confirmed that they are indeed just going to dump Voltron on streaming. I who knows look one out of every 100 straight to streaming movies end up being okay. 99 of them don't. But maybe this will be one of the ones. One can only hope.
