[00:01:42]Hello and welcome back to Portugal Muse in central Portugal. We are back at the Talis Nal House today repairing some damage from the storms in February. Uh the main things we're hoping to get completed today is the chimney and the roof, making sure that they're watertight, that there's no leaks coming into the house and causing damage. And then the other big job that we're hoping to get finished today is another leak.

[00:02:09]So there was water coming in from the public footpath and it was coming into that second bedroom and causing damage to the wooden mezzanine. Um so we're hoping to get both those jobs finished today. So, it's quite exciting and I hope you enjoy the progress.

[00:02:24]>> Right. So, you know what to do and carry on with this.

[00:02:29]Get all of that off. When you've done that, I'll come along with a mini grinder with a cut brush on it. Wire cut brush. Clean this off. If you can give it all a good sweep down, get rid of all the rubbish. Go all the way to the bottom. You won't have any problem cuz it's really soft and it's really easy.

[00:02:47]We've cleaned it up. We'll put one small fillet in to fill this gap up with the waterproof cement. Let that go off a bit and then put proper fillet along there.

[00:02:59]I don't think it's worth keeping these bits of slate to put in it cuz I I think they're allowing water to get into the cement. Fill it. Let's >> have a look at one >> like that.

[00:03:13]>> It's for decoration, but I think it's allowing it to expand.

[00:03:18]>> Yeah, the water's getting in around them and allowing it to break.

[00:03:22]>> And I'm what I'm going to do is put a fiber in as well to stop it cracking.

[00:03:27]>> And the swimming pool waterproofer.

[00:03:29]>> So that's not supposed to come off in one piece like that.

[00:03:32]>> Oh god, no. That's supposed to be properly stuck on here.

[00:03:39]>> So that won't have had any um like waterproofing in it either.

[00:03:43]>> No, that's not waterproof at all. It's not stuck at all.

[00:04:02]And then what I'll do, I'll dampen it as I'm going to allow it to bond properly.

[00:04:06]And I'll put some cement with fiber and waterproof.

[00:04:11]do a thin one first just to fill in all the holes so you can work it right in and then we'll put like a bigger one going over the top.

[00:06:11]>> Um, there's the big bit that comes off like on its own pretty much. And then they they've used something else, >> which is like a purpley color.

[00:06:21]>> So, that's attached to like the shish stones. So, I'm really delicately and carefully trying to take that off [snorts] >> because that needs to come off for the new stuff to adhere. Right.

[00:06:34]>> That's all cracked and loose.

[00:06:36]>> Yeah. So, that's what I'm doing. That's why it's taking so long. I bet you were thinking, why is it taking us so long?

[00:06:43]>> I thought that would take ages to get all that off.

[00:14:44]So, we're felted all the way around the chimney now. back gutter up the side on the end of the um the corrugated sheeting that's under the unders and overs.

[00:14:54]Um now I'm going to put some cement around there, some waterproof cement with some fibers in uh just around the chimney.

[00:15:03]Nice little fillet and then tile it back in.

[00:15:14]>> And then obviously The bedroom finishes here >> and there. You can see the really bad bits, can't you?

[00:15:23]>> So, there's a light skim of it just here.

[00:15:26]>> I wouldn't worry about that.

[00:15:27]>> But would that be going in the woods or not? Really?

[00:15:30]>> There's no sign of it.

[00:15:34]And we just got to give it a good clean up.

[00:16:02]So, all I'm doing now is just giving this a really good clean up. So, uh it gives a good key for the cement which [snorts] is a mix of um sand and cement waterproofer that you use for making swimming pool cement and fibers that will stop it cracking. [snorts] Um do it in two layers. first one just to fill in all the holes and cracks and then uh tomorrow we'll give it like make a proper cement fill it here that will be waterproof and well bonded to the wall. But I need to get all the moss and all the old dirt and everything off first.

[00:17:25]Well, as you know, I was I put another um layer on the top to protect the first layer. So, the first layer is the one that's really going to seal it against the wall. And then this is on the top just to build it out a bit, give it a bit more protection. I wasn't going to put these pieces of slate in because on the last one, that's where it was breaking up around the edges of the slates. But, as this is more decorative, I think it looks a bit nicer with the pieces of slate put back in. But, I really need this cement to be going off a bit quicker. We're at the end of the day almost. Um, it's still really soft and I still need to finish it and smooth it and I need to get it done because we got thunderstorms forecast for tomorrow on Saturday. I'll try my best and see and see if I can get it finished.

[00:18:08]I finished um sealing around the chimney, replacing the broken tiles behind it. Um, I'll show you what I've been what I've been doing.

[00:18:20]So, as I told you before, these are unders and overs. Um, well, just the overs on top of uh terracotta colored corrugated sheeting. So, without removing that sheeting, which would have meant taking all of this whole section of roof off. Um, you know, there was no way of replacing the metal flashing around the chimney, which was um which was no good. So what I've done, I've used flat roofing felt torch to torch on flat roofing felt over the top of that up both sides and behind in the back gutter and in the gap at the end where there where the sheeting finished short of the end. And then I've tried to um color it with some roofing paint over the top and I've replaced all of the broken tiles around the chimney and there's new cement at the sides.

[00:19:10]It's really difficult to waterproof these uh shist chimneys because, you know, the water can get in these little gaps and then run down the back of it. But I've gone in as far as I can with a pointing at the bottom and at the sides.

[00:19:25]So, I'm pretty confident that'll be waterproof now.

[00:19:30]And I've replaced the broken tiles along the rest of the roof. These stones and bits of slate that are on the roof, what they're there for is to prevent wind lift lifting the tiles up. The bottom course is bedded on cement.

[00:19:47]Then they're just held on hooks. They just sit there on their own weight.

[00:19:50]Normally when it's when you have the unders as well, they fit together better. But when you're doing it like this, you need hooks to hold the the line of tiles in place. And then these big lumps of heavy slate on the top. Um, they're there to stop the wind lifting the tiles up, but it'll be all good now.

[00:20:07]No more water dripping through the house.

[00:20:25]What a view. It's really hot day again today.

[00:20:37]Well, we managed to get done what we wanted to get done today, which was to finish fixing the leaks on the roof and to finish fixing the leak where the path meets the side of the house cuz all the water was coming in through the wall there. We were up against it a bit on time because we're waiting for the cement to go off uh so that we could, you know, we could finish it. Um, we've just about managed to get it done. It's just about managed to set enough. Uh, we're right at the end of the day now.

[00:21:03]So, I'm glad we've got that done. It's very important to get all the leaks fixed before you move on to doing any other work because, you know, you need to we need to be fixing the damage and we don't want more damage to be caused if we get any big raintorms which seem to come out of the blue. Um, so now we can get on with sanding back the floorboards inside. um retreating those, replacing anything that's rotten, and then we can start making the place look pretty, ready for guests in the summer.
