South Africa, that shining example of tolerance and multiculturalism, is expelling black immigrants

[00:00:03]I'm always amused when certain universal human traits start expressing themselves in this or that group.

[00:00:11]I love the way that some people are so surprised when this happens.

[00:00:16]Think the desire to expel illegal black immigrants from one's country because they're taking all the jobs and using essential services such as hospitals and schools.

[00:00:28]In Britain, this dreadful attitude is claimed to be the exclusive province of ignorant and bigoted white working class folk.

[00:00:36]Terrible way to carry on, unlike the Guardian reading intellectuals.

[00:00:41]Naked and unashamed racism.

[00:00:45]Not like that wonderful rainbow nation South Africa where black and white, African and Indian all live happily together celebrating each other's cultures in the spirit of generosity and tolerance.

[00:00:59]Of course, human nature is, as I said, pretty much same whatever color your skin happens to be. And the Bantu in South Africa are no exception to this.

[00:01:09]When they see loads of black African immigrants from Ghana and Nigeria, many of them having entered the country illegally, the native born South Africans object.

[00:01:20]And lately they've been cutting up rough about the pressure on public services and the way that jobs are being taken by all those immigrants.

[00:01:29]One militant group has given all those unwanted foreigners until June the 30th to leave the country.

[00:01:36]And this is ominous, and so the Ghanaian government has been arranging flights to repatriate its citizens from South Africa.

[00:01:43]The first of which left today carrying 300 people back to their own country.

[00:01:53]There are two amusing points. The first is that white liberal always dismayed to discover that black people can be intolerant and xenophobic and behave in exactly the same way as supporters of the British National Party or the National Front.

[00:02:10]They find it somehow more shocking when black people display those common traits than when they are seen in white people.

[00:02:18]The other amusing point is that after Nelson Mandela was free, the expectation was South Africa would become a peaceful and liberal democracy and that the rainbow nation would flourish as a benevolent place for all colors and creeds.

[00:02:34]But this has not happened is puzzling to many of those people who campaigned for the release of Nelson Mandela.

[00:02:41]Never mind, there are plenty of new causes to support such as free Palestine. There's no point dwelling on the past.
