MH002 Next Gen Probiotic Fast Tracked for UC #IBD

[00:00:00]I spoke about this next generation probiotic back in February and I'm really pleased that it's been recognized by the FDA. They've been granted this fast track designation which really it doesn't mean it's approved but it does mean that the FDA recognizes that this treatment has enough early promise and in UC we don't have many of these sorts of treatments. I'm Dr. Pranap, gastroenterologist here in Dubai looking after patients with IBD and gut health problems. So what happens next? They're moving into a larger study, approximately 200 patients with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis who are not controlled with just 5-ASA. They may be needing steroids as well.

[00:00:40]They will compare MH002 against placebo over 12-week period and then follow up the patients for a lot longer. We will probably see the key results in 2027.

[00:00:51]Now why am I interested in this?

[00:00:54]Because MH002 is not just another random probiotic. It's made up of six selected gut bacteria and they're designed to improve the gut environment, support the lining to produce signals called butyrate. Now in my previous talks I've talked about the different pathways of colitis like the TNF IL-23 and these next generation probiotics are approaching that other pathway that I have up there which is the microbiome and gut lining pathway.

[00:01:23]I don't think this will replace biologics but I do think in the future that combining an immune pathway treatment with a gut environment treatment is where I see we make big strides.
