[00:01:11]In 2020, Malibu had a population of 10,654 people and it has been the home of just countless countless celebrities. Um, one of my personal favorites might be Barbara Sterand Malibu. Actually, her home here in Malibu is the uh the origin of the Sterand effect. More about that later, maybe in the bonus footage. Uh, but right now we are at, check it out, Malibu City Hall.

So, uh, lots of celebrities have, uh, lived in Santa Monica over the years. Um, so we're walking down the street in Santa Monica, minding a business, and I'm kind of shocked by the banks around here and how much information they have on display for the public. You'll see. If an employee comes out and talks to us, I will I will certainly ask them if that's true.

If you have a a monitors like that and they're facing the sidewalk, anybody literally anybody outside with a cell phone can zoom in and see everything on your monitors.

It's kind of uh impossible to see through completely. So, that is sufficient security to keep their customers private information private.

[00:25:23]Well, welcome back. So in 2005 somebody coined the phrase the Strerisand effect and what that is in a nutshell. In 2003, there was a gentleman that was doing a little geological study of the coastline of California, and he posted thousands of photographs. And one of those photographs was a photograph of none other than Barbara Sterisan's house on the California coast.

[00:25:51]And um all of these photos were online, including including the the photo of her house. and uh she sued the man for $50 million.

[00:26:06]And at least that's what I've read. And uh she lost. She had to wind up paying like $150 $170,000 or something like that in attorney's fees. Uh his attorney's fees. God knows what she paid her attorney. Um and thus look at that nice pair of shoes.

[00:26:31]Anyways, anyways um thus thus the the term striand effect um came into being because before she threw a fit about it and sued this guy, a total of six people had actually downloaded this photo of her house. Six.

[00:26:54]Two of those six people were her attorneys after she threw a fit about it and sued this guy for $50 million.

[00:27:03]Uh I believe it was $420,000 people downloaded that. And so the striand effect is basically when you try to prevent something from getting out there and your efforts to quash that information results in more publicity and more people uh seeing it.

[00:27:25]So uh we're going to swing by that house. Now we really can't see much of the house from uh the street here.

[00:27:33]actually. Uh it's it's back a little bit. We swung by here yesterday. I was out here for 15 maybe 20 seconds and a security guard came outside, asked me if I'd taken my meds. Um suggested I was schizophrenic because I was out here taking pictures on a public street of a gate of a famous celebrity.
