Caught by Surprise!! (vlog 146)Added:
[music] [music] >> We've been watching Peggy Jean [music] for a while now, and she finally had her baby.
You can probably tell by the way she's backing off from her baby that she's never had one before, so she's a little confused on what she's trying to [music] do.
She was eager to get that first drink, [music] and I saw that Peggy Jean was still licking her off, so she obviously loved her baby, and to this day, she is 100% committed to that baby.
>> [music] >> I named her Lala, which is a minor character in Charlie Brown, but hey, I'll run out if I don't [music] use minor characters.
You can drive yourself crazy watching these calves trying to get the milk and mom backing off like [music] this, but they figure it out.
I wanted to stay until the baby was on her, and that way we could ensure [music] that it got colostrum and everything, and that happened eventually.
>> [music] [music] >> Being a first-time mom and half longhorn, she's not going to make a ton of milk. So, sometimes if you give him sweet [music] feed, it'll encourage more milk to be made. But, you got to be sneaky cuz the rest of the cows want it, too. Especially Lucy, >> [music] >> who's a little too friendly.
>> [music] [music] >> Lucy didn't care what kind of consequence she got. She wanted that food, and Peggy Jean didn't need it, in her opinion.
>> [music] >> The game's over when the longhorns pull up. They have a lot longer reach.
>> [music] >> We've been able to sneak her some sweet feed, but nonetheless, she's doing really well, and this is almost [music] a week later.
Okay, a lot of this footage is panicked.
You can see babies out here in the grazing area of the pig pens. Oh my gosh, this is like the first time we've ever had a pig deliver on time. Okay, um Helena had her babies last night, which is where it's >> [music] >> like the exact day that we didn't want her to cuz we're trying to go to my uncle's birthday party.
Woo!
And I was just going to like stay out here and wait for the babies to come.
That way they can get colostrum like they didn't get last time and I can give it to them within this first 6 hours.
So, I'm trying to give it to them now.
She also had them in the grazing area.
So, Derek is kicking Luna and her babies out so that we can get her in and we'll put Luna and her babies somewhere else.
>> [music] >> That's what's going on.
So, here they are in the grazing area.
She made a little nest in there out of the grass. So, she did a good job and we got them all moved to a farrowing crate.
I think they actually are full.
So, they're putting it I have to force it in their mouth, but they're not drinking it.
>> [music] >> Makes it really frustrating.
I'm trying to save their lives.
Mom's freaking out that she [music] won't come. She won't go the right way.
I'm counting six [music] males and three females, of course, cuz we want a replacement for Helena.
>> [music] >> So.
>> [music] >> Okay, mom's coming over, but this is what we've been doing.
Just trying to get all of them.
It's hard to do it one-handed.
And just syringe feeding them.
Just to make sure [music] they have something. This is going to be a hectic part of the video.
It was really hard to decide who I'd fed and who I hadn't, so if they had a sticky chin, then they had been fed. So, some of them probably got fed twice, but the more the better.
After all that, we put Helena back with her babies and everybody calmed down a little bit.
We were trying to go to my uncle's birthday party in Austin, so it was over a 3-hour drive for us, and we had to get there at a certain time. So, of course, she had them that day. Okay, let me just calmly go through what happened.
We were hoping she would not farrow today.
She was actually due >> [music] >> yesterday, and because she didn't milk up last time, what we should have done is culled her.
When we got Helena, Derek had to go out of state for her. We had to pay for out-of-state vet inspections. We had to pay [music] for the gas to get there, and he went all the way to Missouri or Mississippi [music] uh to get her. Anyway, um he's wanted this line for a long time. I don't really like Helena. She's not a very nice pig, so I would have culled her anyway.
But anyway, we wanted to get our money's worth out of her and get a replacement female, because last time she had nine or 10 babies. They lived till 10 days old, and [music] the last two, we gave them antibiotics. One of them died anyway, and then the last one was Tim.
He was raised in our house. He was horrible sounding. I don't know how we saved him, but [music] he had like three rounds of antibiotics and some pink uh painkillers, steroids, something like that. Not worth a feeder price-wise, but it is [music] worth a life. So, this time we knew it was probably going to happen again. Even though the pigs lived till they were 10, they died [music] at 10 days, which obviously means colostrum, and the vet told me when I took [music] Tiny Tim in that it's not the quality of colostrum, it's the [music] quantity of colostrum. We tried what we can. Whether you think it was my fault or not, it was. We did breed her and we shouldn't have. So, >> [music] >> we were going to be responsible and be there and we weren't. So, um this is probably going to be a hard week.
Anyway, here's the tour of the babies.
This is Helga's seven.
>> [music] >> Then the Luna's four out in the grazing yard here.
And Fleur has six boys.
Helena has nine here, three girls and six boys.
And to catch you up to date here, all of this farrowing happened on a Saturday.
And now, as I'm recording this, it's Friday. So, [music] they're almost a week old. We have tried on multiple occasions to give them [music] extra milk. After the first 48 hours, there's no point in giving them colostrum again.
The plan is, once we [music] see any kind of downhill movement with these piglets or possibly [music] even at a week old, I'm just going to hit them all with antibiotics.
What they're getting from the colostrum is antibodies. So, if they [music] don't have enough, then they're just susceptible to anything. And pneumonia is the easiest [music] thing for pigs to get because their lung capacity is so small.
I feel like I haven't shown much of the goats lately. So, here's my little Hazel and how she's coming along. She's getting a little more friendly. She'll let me pet her, but not willingly.
Like I have to sneak up on her and pet her.
She's got a good body size. I really don't like the teeny tiny ones cuz it's hard to pass babies in those. [music] And look at those moon spots.
Autumn's moon spots are also showing up a little bit more, >> [music] >> even though you can't see it on them that side as much, but that one on her shoulder is really nice.
In other news, [music] it's already hay season. Everybody was trying to get hay cut and bailed before this came. I am so thankful for the rain >> [music] >> and the cooler temperature. It's almost the end of May and we still haven't been in the 90s much.
But it has been warm enough to be the end of the potatoes. [music] I didn't wait till all of the greens were brown because the ants were starting to make holes in some of the potatoes that I [music] could see. So, I went ahead and pulled them. They have to be used a little bit faster like that.
If anybody knows how I can preserve these potatoes without canning them, please let me know.
>> [music] >> I don't know how well they'll freeze.
Okay, it's about to rain, but I usually get I usually get no Idaho potatoes, so I didn't even plant them this year. Very few Yukon Golds.
I didn't [music] plant as many of those as I did the Red Pontiac. So, Red Pontiac, I had an okay harvest, but I think because I wasn't able to [music] till real low, is why I didn't get the greatest harvest, but it's good enough.
We've put the primer down for the self-leveling.
And then we have this just to keep the self-level concrete uh right there. And this will be wood when we get the wood in.
But at least we're making some progress.
And I took all of my shelves out and accidentally busted a hole in it. But good thing I'm putting Wayne's coating on there.
There it is. We had our games up there [music] on the top. I think that's where it's going to go again.
Okay.
So, for today, going to let it dry.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> This is so fun.
>> [music] >> Okay.
There we should do it.
>> [music] >> That was actually pretty fun.
For a small space. We'll see how the kitchen is.
We had to cut the ends of these diamonds off to shove inside the other diamonds.
And then we naively thought we could go at a moderate pace. Or I thought we didn't need to be that rushed. But towards the end we did.
So, I didn't get a lot of filmed cuz we had to keep working.
Start to finish with cutting and mixing the mud and everything, it took us about 4 hours.
My legs are like jello, but we done it.
>> [music] >> Quick view of the pantry cuz it's not that even, but Let me just say that freaking pantry took us forever and we didn't think it was going to take that long. It had a lot of weird small cuts.
Make sure you're subscribed so you can see the grout and everything else we're doing in the rest of the house. Also, you when you give this a like, a heart button appears. It's completely free and if you wouldn't mind clicking that, it helps smaller channels be seen more often.
If you like this video, feel free to subscribe. I upload some Wednesdays and [music] all Sundays and you can keep watching us grow our farm. Have a good one.
