We're going to compare students [music] screen time before finals exam week and during finals exam week screen time that has to review sessions [music] and online notes or that of the stress calling and late night Tik Tok.

[00:00:42]We chose this topic because a lot of students spend more time on their phones during exam week whether for studying scrolling on social media or relaxing from stress.

[00:00:53]We became curious if students screen time changes before finals week compared to during finals week since many of us can relate to staying online [music] for longer hours during exams.

[00:01:08]Nowadays students use gadgets almost every day especially during exam season.

[00:01:15]However, [music] too much screen time can affect focus sleep and study habits. The problem is we do not know if students really spend [music] more time on their screen during final exam week >> [music] >> or compared to before final exam week.

[00:01:36]Our objective [music] is to compare the screen time of students before finals exam week and during [music] finals exam week. We also want to know if there is a significant difference between the two so we can better understand students habits during stressful academic periods.

[00:03:42]Survey questionnaires is specifically downloaded or sent to respondents.

[00:03:47]The survey asked students about their screen time usage before final week and during this final week. After the retrieval of the accomplished survey questionnaires, [music] the gathered data was organized and tabulated. We used Jamovi to calculate and analyze the collected data using a paired t-test.

[00:04:09]>> [music] >> We used Jamovi because it is user-friendly, accurate, and designed for statistical analysis. It helped us organize the data easily, calculate the results quickly, and generate reliable statistical outputs such as the t-value and p-value needed for our study.

[00:04:33]We entered the collected screen time scores into the software >> [music] >> and collected and selected the paired t-test as our statistical tool.

[00:04:43]And these are hypotheses. [music] Null hypothesis: There is no significant difference in screen [music] time usage before and during final week.

[00:04:55]Alternative hypothesis: [music] There is a significant difference in screen time usage usage before and during final week.

[00:05:13]First, open the Jamovi app.

[00:05:28]Next, name the data variable.

[00:05:32]For this study, the data shall be named before exam week and during exam week.

[00:05:41]Change the measure type into continuous and the data type to decimal.

[00:05:46]And then, input all data required to corresponding variable.

[00:06:34]After completing the data input, click T test, and under T test, T paired sample T test.

[00:06:43]Drag before exam week variable in the left side of the table, and during the exam week variable to the right side of the table.

[00:07:30]Based on the collected data, the average [music] screen time before exam week was 8.94 hours with a standard deviation of 3.31. [music] This means that before the exam week, students spend about 9 hours on average using their smartphones. The standard deviation of 3.31 means that not all students had the [music] exact same screen time. Some students used their devices for fewer hours, while [music] others used them for more hours. The number 3.31 shows how spread out the students' screen time was from the average. [music] During exam week, the average screen time decreased to 7.25 hours with a standard deviation of 3.58. This shows that students spent around 1.69 hours less on their devices [music] during exam week.

[00:08:20]To compare the two sets of scores, the researchers used a paired samples t-test. This statistical [music] test compares the same group of participants at two different times.

[00:08:30]>> [music] >> Before conducting the t-test, we checked if the data followed a normal distribution using the Shapiro-Wilk test. [music] The W value shows how closely the data follows a normal pattern. The closer W is to 1, the more the data looks normal.

[00:08:47]Since 0.961 is [music] close to 1, it means the data is fairly normal.

[00:08:53]The P value tells us [music] if the result is statistically significant. If P is less than 0.05, the data is not normal.

[00:09:01]>> [music] >> If P is greater than 0.05, the data is normal enough.

[00:09:06]>> [music] >> Since 0.329 is greater than 0.05, it means the data is considered [music] normal and acceptable for further testing.

[00:09:15]Since the result was non-significant, the data met the requirement for using [music] the paired samples t-test.

[00:09:22]The analysis showed a statistically significant difference between screen time [music] before and during exam week. This means the decrease in screen time was not caused by chance. [music] Students truly used their devices less during exam week.

[00:09:37]The average decrease in screen time was 1.69 hours. The effect size was D is equals 0.760.

[00:09:45]>> [music] >> This indicates a medium to large effect, meaning the change in screen time was noticeably and meaningful.

[00:09:53]In conclusion, the findings suggest [music] that second year BSC students significantly reduce their screen [music] time during exam week. This may indicate that students focus more on studying and academic responsibilities during examinations.

[00:10:15]This study found that students tend to reduce smartphone use during finals week. Likely because they focus more on studying, reviewing lessons, and completing requirements.

[00:10:27]Even if smartphones are useful for learning, students still limit non-academic use to avoid distractions.

[00:10:35]Overall, some periods clearly affect students' digital habits and screen time behavior.

[00:10:42]For future researchers, we recommended to include more respondents and expand the study to the other year levels or programs for more reliable results. Future studies may also [snorts] explore how screen time affect academic performance, sleep, stress, mental health, and productivity.

[00:11:04]It would also help to examine whether students use their phones mainly for academic purposes or entertainment.

[00:11:13]Comparing different schools or exam periods would also give a deeper understanding of students' smartphone behavior.
