EA demonstrates that true mastery lies not in rigid planning, but in the fluid ability to negotiate with the material's inherent flaws. This is a masterclass in tactical adaptation where the stone, rather than the maker, ultimately dictates the final form.

Flintknapping a Novaculite HardinAdded:
Hey folks, EA. So, I got a piece of Novaculite here. I just got done making a Yonke point out of Knife River over Flint from uh from my friend Marty Young Bear.
Neat stuff.
I did heat treat that knife river, but not as probably could have heat treated it more.
Well, I know I could have made it a little easier to work.
This is a pretty piece of evacuite. The colors will probably not show up on the on the TV, but this is pretty pink in here. It does have some issues. It's got a crack in right here. This is from the outside. It's a spall off the outside of the rock. And as you can see, there's some layers layering in here. So, we're going to try and skim as much of this outside here off and see what's left of it. I don't know what's going to be left. So, I don't not sure what I'm going to make.
You see that layer in there?
I got some background noise going over there. It looks like it just switched to owls.
Okay.
Got to get underneath this mess right here.
Go go go.
Got to get all this mess off.
Hey.
So, let's see here.
If you get some flintnapping up.
If you're just telling someone how to flint nap and what what that involved, you' be just moving platforms up and down is basically all flintnapping really is.
just taking a sp and working your platforms up and down and back and forth and all that.
I hope that's not too loud over there. I had it on for ambiance, but Is that the word? Ambiance.
Something like that.
In the beginning of this piece, I was way too fast to build it speed.
I am so I don't know if I've said it before, but I am so incredibly blessed to have my nephew Jaden working with me every day.
He is such a great kid.
My sister and brother-in-law done done a fine job with those kids. All of them are good kids.
This is honest as the day is long.
Goat.
Come on.
Switch blets here.
Okay.
What more we got happening here?
Come on.
Come on.
Okay, I needed that and I got it. That's good.
dog gone it.
I'm g have to pause a minute.
Okay, so that was Jaden and he needs a hand with a horse. So that's going to be that for right there and I'll have to come back finish this later.
Okay, folks. So we're actually like a back to this piece and we're actually uh about a week later.
Um let's see what we can do with it.
Today is Memorial Day.
We are in the shop working today.
Jaden is actually in town today picking up a was picking up some oil for the saws.
and a new belt for one of the saws cuz seem to have had a mishap this morning.
Rock came out of the saw and bound it up, smoked the belt, and almost caught it on fire.
That's why you should always try to be there to keep an eye on them, but that's not always possible with when you got a bunch of stuff happening.
So, he had the some saws running and other ones he was another one he was cleaning.
So this originally my intentions was to make a calf creek.
and that's still my intentions.
Okay.
It's going in there pretty flat now.
I'm going to start causing myself problems.
There one yahoo on here who apparently watches I guess. Um but he always I see him on other channels too. He always makes the same comment.
Did go to his channel, see what he was doing differently, but he actually doesn't have any videos.
or any videos of his own actually that I've seen.
All right, I'm making a mess. We're going to stop right there for a minute.
Longer than a minute. I wish I wouldn't have done that, but I did. Let's go.
This material is definitely much more agreeable than K County was last night. I can tell you that.
Come on now.
I'm having a little bit of trouble on that right there.
Go look See if we can find that pressure.
I was really having a hard time down there around that.
Oh my god.
Fire.
Go go go.
that up underneath that thing.
knock.
really trying to concentrate here.
Every time I clear off a spot, I create a new one. I feel like Hey, goat.
I should have turned that the other direction on that.
Maybe I can run some flakes up in there and get that straightened out.
I did work hard in my copper before I started, but Go.
Putting some more flake scars at this hand.
I'm way too fat down here at this end for what I want to do.
I got up in there.
Come on. It's like one giant undetached flake.
Ooh.
Gather around the campfire.
Flames dance in the night.
Chipping flame with my stone. Brothers on the stars shining bright.
Whispers of the ancients.
You carry on the wind.
Counted by the old ones. Where the wild begins.
Hammer stones and antlers.
Our tools of the crest.
In the quiet of the forest, we find our true p.
With a crack of a blet ringing through the woods crafting our legacy just like we should do with daddy.
It's a brotherhood in the heart of the wild where our spirits unerstood.
Oh, far from the noise of our times, we carve our faith down.
Song surrounds us. It's never too late.
Fire crackles softly.
My stories ignite in this sacred gathering feel so right.
Each strike of the stone is a rhythm of time.
Echoes of the ancients in every single line with a crack of the blet ringing through the woods.
Crafting our legacy just like we should. Chipping dos with Danny.
It's a brotherhood in the heart of the wild where our spirits unerstood.
Underneath the moonlight, ancestral spirits around >> they dance through the shadows painted in the skies.
With every flake that falls, there's a tale to be told and the fires one glow.
We feel brave and bold.
So here's to the memories forged in the flame with my stone brothers beside me. We'll never be the same.
Carving out our futures FROM THE PAST THAT remains in the whispers of the ancients. There's comfort in the rain with a crack of the billy ringing through the woods.
Crafting our legacy just like we should. Chipping thousands with dead.
It's a brotherhood in the heart of the wild where our spirits unerstood.
So gather on the fire. Let the stories unfold.
In the light of the ember, every secret we told from the shadows of the pine to the peak of the hill.
We'll be chpping forever in the silence we feel.
Yeah, I got a spot right there.
Clean it up and see what happens.
I really need to get this off here. I know I can, but I'm not sure if I can or not.
I might have a better chance getting that off of direct percussion than indirect. I'm not sure.
We'll have a great way to get into that here.
Okay. What I do is my bigger flaker. I'm wondering.
Okay, I found my found my flaker.
Might change what I'm doing here.
Possibly.
afraid that I'm not getting in the frame.
Try and shoot one in this direction.
Clean that up. Maybe that'll weaken that so I can get to this other part.
where it just won't do anything.
Just can't get travel across that. I guess that one part of it.
Just can't get under that.
No matter what I do, I just can't get under it.
I wish I could get a hold of that and just push it rest way across.
la go up.
Hey So, originally this was going to be a calf creek. I don't know that I'm going to do that now.
It's getting n there.
See if I can push a pressure flake.
I'm not having much luck with the uh indirect on that spot.
See if we can push this over part of it.
There we go.
All right.
One little tiny piece of junk on there still.
Can't get hold of it.
Go go go go go go go go go.
seem to be struggling with these The top of these pads are domed.
quite a bit. So, I really like working off the top of pad.
I'm working on my edges.
Got it.
>> Not the exact size. It's a little smaller, but the closest they had to it, which >> you should be able to get it on. That thing has some adjustment to it. Some leeway. So, >> yeah, that's fine. I got it. adjust it.
>> I'm uh still working on the video.
>> Maybe you can put that belt on and uh get the oil in this saw.
I don't think we need to ping that blade out there. But the rock came loose, so we're going to have to do something different with that.
Okay.
>> And hopefully I'll be done here shortly.
All right.
You started.
It's looking very Scott Bluffy.
Let me get the book out here and see if we're even Yeah, we're pretty narrow.
That's all the calf creeks we got right there.
Just in this one. Some of them's pretty small.
Just don't know if that's what I want to do with that now because I would like it I like this shape shorter.
So, I think we're going to go What are we going to do here? Let me figure this out and I'll come back.
Okay, change of plans. Um, it just got too narrow for a uh calf creek.
It's an inch and 5/8 wide right now. Um, probably needs to be 2 in at least to do that. So, we're going to do something different.
I like to start out with a golden line, but if it if it changes, it changes.
Just is what it is.
I've made some really nice calf creeks in the past and they seem to be struggling now, but get that done to my liking, you So, I was looking for a notch point in there that to go with, but I wasn't seeing it with that shape for the material. So, I don't know.
Hey, Get the belt on.
>> No.
Too small.
>> I'll come out and look at it.
I need to extend this.
All right.
I'll let you.
>> I was making a calf creek here where I thought I was.
>> What was that?
>> I thought I was making a calf creek here and then it changed my mind. So, >> going for the Dton.
>> No. No. Dton.
I'd make it into a harden or attempt to bigger rocking pot later squared off and stuff. I don't know where it's at. some have to use this one for now.
That is diesel, correct?
>> What was that?
>> That's diesel, right?
>> Yes. Okay.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
around with this, I guess.
Hey, >> there your seats are on the ice chest.
>> On the ice chest one.
on the ice chest.
>> Yeah. One you got in the dining room.
>> I keep talking about the talking about the deep freeze.
>> Oh yeah, deep freeze.
Okay, let's see here.
You going to rent the lunch?
>> All right. I'll see you when you get back.
>> The belt is on this off.
>> Okay, I'll put that on and when you get back, we'll start moving all that material outside.
>> Did you ping this blade or no?
>> No, you ping it when when you get back.
>> Thanks, Jade.
Oh my god.
Okay, I'm going to use rock and pop separator because it's not going to move a bunch of rock.
All it's going to do is dull that down enough Wish I could get under that right there, but there just there's a ridge coming in right there.
If I can push one across there to clean that off some or not.
a little bit.
Pushed under some of it.
just a little bit.
It's not even attached very well, but attached enough to That was so close to picking that all all the way off.
Okay, so we're going to go back to our bevel again.
Probably just going to work late again tonight. I might even shoot some more videos. I don't know.
As long as my wife's gone, I might as well be working and doing stuff, I guess.
Thank you.
No, no, no.
get this edge a bit. And then we're going to probably look the base and Pardons is Another point I wanted to work on.
Um, one of my favorite points. But they're either they're either good or they're not. When you're making them, they certain look that I like.
which my favorite looking harden point is is a Jim Red Fern harden which is a Bob Harden. He makes a lot of those I've got a couple of his that he's made me.
It might be my favorite point that that Jim makes so hard.
Heat. Heat.
No, no, no.
Those are nice turned out like that.
oil will take care of that. But if I can pop them off, I will.
I was having a hard time getting underneath that one.
pat Think that thing's hot.
Imagine that.
These corners on the harden are really important I think.
They need to go up in there sharp to look right.
Okay, just one second. Let me grab something. Okay, I had to get my go juice. I like it. Okay, I'll pull the hardens up here in a minute. We'll look at them.
I like it a lot better than the calf creek I made last night at 2:30 in the morning.
But it's not the calf creek that I was after.
But still pretty nice.
There's our Novaculite uh Calf Creek harden sort of kind of looks pretty good. I like it.
I don't know with that. Pull the book up here.
Base probably could have been a little bit narrower, but here's some hardens right here. Back you out.
Well, that's all the hardens they got on this page, but let's look.
There's some hardens this one. Look how exaggerated the base is there. I really like that.
pretty nice.
The ones like when they're just rounded out like that, I don't really like that.
Or like this here. Just rounded out. I like these like those to come up to a point. So, there a couple more flakes I could take on it. make it a little bit better probably. But there it is.
Let's look up here.
Some more hardens.
Now that hardens really uh crazy.
That's a harden someone resharpened and broke the ears off of and everything else. most likely, I suppose.
But I like that. All right. Appreciate y'all watching. I'm sorry it wasn't the calf creek, but nonetheless, we got to I am going to grind this base.
I'll do that off camera. But appreciate you all watching. We'll catch you on the next one. Y'all keep napping.
