[00:01:13]Malmberget is where Swedish steel comes from. One of the biggest [music] iron ore mines on earth is located 1,250 m below the village. [music] Each year, 5 million tons of iron ore and products are extracted.

[00:01:28]But, the more rock the mine has cut and carry away, the more the ground sinks.

[00:01:38]It looks like the surface [music] of the moon.

[00:01:41]The crater landscape separates Malmberget into western and eastern sections.

[00:01:47]Soon, there will be no ground here at all.

[00:01:50]The mine giveth and the mine taketh away.

[00:01:56]But, Malmberget must continue to [music] exist. The village is too important in Sweden's history.

[00:02:02]It's historic houses too valuable and precious.

[00:02:05]Thus, the state-run mining company attempts [music] the unheard of.

[00:02:09]The mega transport of an entire village.

[00:02:15]Work is already in full swing on the uppermost street called Östra Kyrkogatan.

[00:02:21]All the houses here must make it to their [music] new location intact.

[00:02:30]This man prepares every single house for transport.

[00:02:34]A Swede in a cowboy hat.

[00:02:36]Tommy Nordin, along with his three-man team.

[00:02:39]He has been a house mover for 15 years and has even relocated entire train stations.

[00:02:47]But never a house like this.

[00:02:49]This building [music] in Malmberget is the greatest challenge of Tommy Nordin's life.

[00:02:56]The villa at 2A Hjalmar [music] Söderberg's is Malmberget's pride and joy.

[00:03:01]It is the tallest and most beautiful house far and wide. [music] And the most difficult to transport.

[00:03:08]It weighs as much as 100 SUVs.

[00:03:17]The villa is about 100 years old.

[00:03:20]14 m wide, 14 m tall, and 14 m long.

[00:03:27]In the shape of a T with three chimneys.

[00:03:30]Its total weight, 210 tons.

[00:03:35]Tommy Nordin's first job, removing the earth around the villa.

[00:03:39]That's how it always starts.

[00:03:41]The relocation of Malmberget is a long-term project with several stages.

[00:03:46]18 buildings are on the agenda for this year. 11 houses and seven sheds.

[00:03:54]The peculiar thing about this villa, Tommy must number every individual stone. We're going to save the granite.

[00:04:01]The stone and foundation going to be saved for a new spot.

[00:04:05]This is really we we have to be really careful with them. We cannot smash them and we have to take them down really carefully and how you take down big granite stone carefully it's a mystery, but we are going to do it and we are going to save them and put them up on the new site.

[00:04:23]Tommy's team drills holes in the mortar between the stones in order to take them out.

[00:04:28]Hopefully, the team will manage to reconstruct the foundation exactly at the new location.

[00:05:10]Working by hand is gentler, but it requires greater effort.

[00:05:14]And this is only the beginning.

[00:05:17]The villa will demand much more of the men.

[00:05:37]Special house moving equipment simply does not exist.

[00:05:52]>> It takes about half an hour to break through the first wall, but that was just a prelude.

[00:06:05]Before the actual transport can begin, the team must complete three tasks. The first, making holes in the foundation.

[00:06:13]The holes are necessary for the most important step. [music] Namely, the second task, placing eight steel girders under the villa so that it can travel stably. Without them, the heavy chimneys in particular would likely break.

[00:06:30]Task number three, using hydraulics to lift the whole villa so that the transporter can drive underneath and take it away.

[00:06:40]It all depends on the chimneys.

[00:06:43]With them, the whole transport literally stands or falls.

[00:06:49]The chimney is like a stone column in the center of the house and uh it's the heaviest part of the house, so we need to get a good uh connection with the beam, so we really really are sure that it's uh come with us when we're lifting the house. Otherwise, we have a big mess inside with cracks around the chimneys and uh a lot of issues later.

[00:07:10]The difficulty, the team must drill into the chimney in order to place the steel girder underneath that supports it.

[00:07:17]But the team may drill away only one side. That is only half of the chimney.

[00:07:23]Otherwise, it would collapse.

[00:07:25]Thus, the steel girder may only go under one half of the chimney.

[00:07:31]The men repeatedly make sure that they are not removing too much.

[00:07:37]Then, they discover an iron beam in the ceiling. tied together [music] here. old fireplace or part of the chimney?

[00:07:44]A crucial question.

[00:07:48]The house movers have to know what it is.

[00:07:51]Because if they don't get the chimney along with the iron beam, the whole villa could collapse before it is moved 1 cm.

[00:08:07]And we took that part.

[00:08:10]We find the beam under, so we was going up and double-check it, and there is no fireplace. It's only the the shape of the chimney, like the the same shape you see down there. So, that's good for us.

[00:08:19]I just I just don't remember exactly, because I'm moving 32 houses up here, and you've been checking everybody, and sometimes you forget if it's a fireplace or not.

[00:08:30]In addition to the chimneys, the men must deal with another big problem area.

[00:08:39]This connection between the the stone and the wood is the most most fragile.

[00:08:44]So, we have to be really careful, so we not crack this, or getting too much movement between them.

[00:08:50]When they lift the villa later, it must remain absolutely level. Otherwise, terrible cracks will immediately appear in every wall.

[00:09:00]In the attic, it becomes clear why this villa makes the house movers work much more difficult than all the other houses.

[00:09:10]Two chimneys run together [music] up here.

[00:09:13]That means one of the three chimneys is in reality a double chimney.

[00:09:18]Tommy Lund [music] must make very sure that he actually secures all the chimneys under the house.

[00:09:25]Three chimneys are visible on the roof, but there are actually four.

[00:09:31]That means more work, greater caution, and more time required.

[00:09:40]This makes it a little bit complicated because the other house has only two chimneys in the center line of the house. This house have four chimneys spread out all around the house. So, this is a much more complicated and um it needs more much more time to make sure you have the all the chimneys under the beams.

[00:09:57]This villa has stood in this cozy settlement on the hillside for 98 years.

[00:10:01]Now, all the houses here must go. In a few months, the mega transport must be complete.

[00:10:10]The procedure is similar for all the houses. A team of specialists drives up with a trailer about 30 m long, which they must move under the house.

[00:10:20]The team must maneuver the trailer onto a precise spot.

[00:10:26]Then, the specialists use hydraulics to lift the trailer bed.

[00:10:31]When the building rests precisely on [music] the calculated spot, the epic journey can begin.

[00:10:37]It sounds like a routine job.

[00:10:42]And, in fact, house moving is nothing new in Malmberget.

[00:10:47]The relocation of the church in 1974 marked the beginning of a larger resettlement program.

[00:10:53]In quick succession, it was followed by the school, the movie theater, and stores, and also large parts of the village center.

[00:11:02]By 2032, 2,000 residential units must be relocated.

[00:11:08]250,000 sq m of land will be cleared. That means almost the entire village will disappear.

[00:11:22]And be resurrected here in the neighboring town of Koskullskulle, 7 km away. Despite the proximity to the mine, Malmberget's houses can remain here, for the mind extends in the opposite direction.

[00:12:01]House mover Tommy Nuland and his team are still working on task number two.

[00:12:08]No mistakes may be made now with the chimneys.

[00:12:17]This is the marks of the actual chimney.

[00:12:20]And this is the stone.

[00:12:23]So, if you take this stone out If you take this stone out, this is the only piece that hold the chimney up.

[00:12:29]So, that's why we have to cut it here, so we get the 50% free and 50% still on the foundation.

[00:12:36]Because this is the this is the chimney now.

[00:12:38]So, if you take this stone out, we get a big problem.

[00:12:42]Tommy Nuland's tool, a diamond saw.

[00:12:50]This chain is not a cutting chain, it's a grinding chain, so it's not a It's not like a chainsaw when it you can stuck and you can get it to flying into your face, because this is not cutting the Actually not the cutting, it's grinding down the stones. It's actually just heavy and a lot of water.

[00:19:37]On the fourth day, all eight steel girders are bearing their weight.

[00:19:42]Task number two is finally complete.

[00:19:46]A big part of the job is done.

[00:19:48]With the digging and putting the beam and secure the chimneys, so it feels really good because we have come a long way on this lifting project. Project, so this feels really nice now because this is a big step on the journey.

[00:20:02]Before the villa can begin its [music] journey, one man wants to say goodbye.

[00:20:06]Jens Anderson, who lived in the house [music] for 8 years.

[00:20:13]It's amazing.

[00:20:15]He has never seen the [music] villa like this before.

[00:20:18]He and the other inhabitants moved out 3 months ago to make way for the villa's mega transport.

[00:20:32]Feels empty.

[00:20:35]Jens really loved this view in particular.

[00:20:38]And yet, [music] he is happy that at least the villa will be spared.

[00:20:47]We had good times in in this this apartment and um like watching over the town right the town right now, it's um special feeling because the new place we have it's not we don't have any views like this. I think moving the houses is a good thing um because it's an old house, it has lot of history. So, um I'm excited to see the new place and someday I can show my kids where I was staying like for 8 years or something.

[00:21:18]So, I think it's a good good thing to take care of all the houses, not not tear them apart.

[00:21:25]Malmberget will not disappear entirely [music] as long as its houses attest to its former greatness and significance.

[00:21:35]My grandparents told me that Malmberget were the place where everybody wanted to live at.

[00:21:42]Normally, it was a lot of people over here and um you see, there were like always traffic on the roads and stuff like that and um maybe in the '90s in the beginning of 2000, it was it was feeling like um it's getting smaller and smaller because the mine were so close to the town.

[00:22:02]It feels nowadays like more like a ghost town.

[00:22:11]The big villa will also be gone soon.

[00:22:14]Today, after nearly 100 years, it will leave its foundation so that the trailer can drive underneath and carry it on its back.

[00:22:23]It sounds easy and Tommy says he only needs a few cylinders for it.

[00:22:28]But of course, it's not that easy.

[00:22:34]This is a normal standard lifting cylinder. It's a high pressure cylinder. It can stand 700 bars.

[00:22:42]It's lift 30 ton when you put 100 bars pressure on it. And the pump is an electric powered hydraulic pump with uh some control valves and a really nice drawing how we're going to put the >> [laughter] >> how we're going to put the hoses.

[00:23:01]Not special, but Not makes no sense for a normal person, but for us it's kind of how it's going to be.

[00:23:09]16 cylinders, all operated in sync with one another.

[00:23:13]Each one can lift 30 tons. That means about twice as much power as necessary for the 200-ton house.

[00:23:21]The men plan to lift the villa in four or five stages. A few years ago, it worked very differently.

[00:23:31]In the beginning when I first year I worked, I just hand-pumped all the houses with the with the hand-pump jacks.

[00:23:39]I would use small ones.

[00:23:41]Then it take maybe 2 days lifting a house, but you had doesn't need to go to the gym after.

[00:23:53]If everything goes well today, they'll be done in a couple of [music] hours.

[00:24:28]The first stopping point is reached at 350 bar, which translates to 10 cm.

[00:24:35]Now the team must continue working quickly. The villa's weight is entirely on the cylinders. If one of them lost pressure, the others would adjust as rapidly as possible.

[00:24:54]This is the critical part of the lifting.

[00:24:57]When it's hanging on the hikers, it's good to finish this. You don't go to break now or take a coffee or something.

[00:26:34]After about an hour's drive, the mega transport reaches its destination of Koskullskulle.

[00:26:41]Depending on how long the house has been uninhabited before the move, it will be about 1 year before people can move back in.

[00:26:49]That's how much time is necessary for renovations.

[00:27:07]The trailer must drive over the foundation and place the house precisely above the wooden towers.

[00:27:15]Then, the trailer bed is lowered and the building is set [music] down.

[00:27:27]A whole row of houses is already missing in Maun Berget.

[00:27:31]But today, the moment has come for the biggest and heaviest house.

[00:27:35]For Maun Berget's pride and joy.

[00:27:40]After exactly 98 years, today it will leave its birthplace for the first and probably only time.

[00:27:50]And the route [music] has now also been carefully prepared.

[00:27:54]For a mega transport means far more than simply bringing a house from point [music] A to point B.

[00:28:00]Street signs must be removed, streets must be closed, everything in the way of the columns path must go.

[00:29:25]Each can carry 36 tons and is supported by hydraulic cylinders that allow the trailer bed to be raised and lowered.

[00:29:34]This is important for loading and unloading, but also during the move.

[00:29:41]It allows the trailer to stay level even when driving over an uneven or bumpy surface.

[00:29:48]This is what makes it possible to transport a house without damaging it.

[00:29:53]The hydraulics are controlled directly on the trailer.

[00:29:58]So, while we do the operation, there will be one operator in here. One will be in a truck. And that one uh is going to um use the the the sticks to uh keep the the the trailers level as possible, and he keeps uh the trailer within the stroke.

[00:30:19]The trailer's 144 wheels have a special feature that is important when loading and during transport.

[00:30:26]They can be steered by remote control.

[00:30:28]This helps the bulky trailer get around narrow curves.

[00:30:37]Heavy-duty transports are nothing new for them.

[00:30:40]But, the relocation of Maalmberget is something special, even for Ren.

[00:30:46]For us it's I won't say a daily job, but we do it all the time. But if you drive that house through the village, all people are standing there. They're stopping cars. They're making photographs. That's like you you you can imagine what the impact of moving a house is.

[00:31:02]Today is the big day.

[00:31:05]For the residents of Malmberget, for the transport team, but also for Tommy Nuolainen. Now we'll see whether his team did good work.

[00:31:16]It feels really nice after all these weeks of working. And now we're going to take the trailer under and make the first test lift.

[00:33:18]The trailer must be able to make adjustments for hills and holes. That means the trailer bed must be raised 65 cm.

[00:33:33]And we're just doing uh a step-by-step.

[00:33:36]So, we're putting 20 bars more, and we'll just lift it up. See if nothing going to happen, then get a little bit more and a little bit more. So, that's step-by-step the procedure of the lifting the house.

[00:33:48]A cumbersome and cautious approach, but it's the only way the men can know that 200 tons are sitting properly on the trailer.

[00:33:58]Only then can they judge how the house will react during the transport.

[00:34:04]A procedure full of suspense.

[00:34:09]So far, the experts have been working on the basis of theoretical calculations.

[00:34:14]Total weight, mass distribution, center of gravity.

[00:34:28]This is uh this part of our whole operation is the most delicate part because we need to lift the house and we don't know where the exact COG or what the exact weight is. The house was already built, so um due to changes uh old plans uh renovations the the um the COG uh uh or the center of gravity will always be an estimation. So, it's not a new built fabrication product where we can have point out the COG. Um so, it's that's make house moving a lot more difficult.

[00:35:06]After 4 hours, it is done.

[00:35:08]The villa rests on the trailer and not on the wooden towers.

[00:35:13]The team still has to fasten the steel girders with chains.

[00:35:17]They are the only means of securing the building.

[00:35:23]A big step has been taken, but now a path full of obstacles lies ahead.

[00:35:35]When you move a house, you probably are in really uh small villages, tight areas uh with a wide load. So, we can move like um stuff that's twice uh as heavy as the house, but it's probably uh a little less wide and it's pretty straightforward.

[00:36:48]But, with a top speed of 10 km/h and as straight as possible, any uncontrolled movement, like braking, must be avoided as it could damage the villa.

[00:38:32]The cylinder's hydraulics cannot offset [music] the slope enough to keep the villa upright.

[00:38:40]And then, [music] the passage gets very, very narrow. To the right and to the left.

So, you can imagine with a pen, if I hold it like this, I won't put any pressure with my fingers. But, if this will be twice as long or three times as long, I will need have more muscle power in my fingers to keep it stable.
