Roughly 70% of the country is covered by mountains and plateaus, making it a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
Number two, history and mystery. One of the world's great archaeological mysteries, this area features thousands of giant stone jars scattered across the landscape. They are believed to be over 2,000 years old and were likely used for ancient burial rituals. Per capita, Laos is the most heavily bombed nation in history. During the Vietnam War, over 2 million tons of ordinance were dropped on the country. Today, many organizations work to clear unexloded bombs, UXO, and you can see bomb architecture where casings have been repurposed into planters or scrap metal.
Number three, culture and lifestyle.
Laos has the highest consumption of sticky rice, cow meow in the world. It is a staple of every meal and is traditionally eaten with the hands using small wicker baskets called tip cow. The historic name for Laos is Lansan, which translates to the land of a million elephants. While wild elephant populations have dwindled, the animal remains a powerful national symbol.
