The most common long-term complications after hernia repair surgery involve the mesh implant, including chronic pain from the implant in the abdominal wall, infection, mesh contact with the intestine causing potential injury, and hernia recurrence which occurs when mesh wasn't used initially or when the mesh was too small to cover the hernia opening, often requiring another repair surgery.

Long-Term Complications After Hernia Repair (What Patients Should Know)Added:
The most common long-term complications related to hernia repair surgery are usually have to do with the mesh put in place. And that can include anything from the long-term infection or having the mesh in contact with the intestine, which can potentially cause injury to the intestine. Or things like chronic pain from having that implant in your abdominal wall, where you have a lot of movement happening. Also, there's a risk for hernia recurrence, which just means the hernia has come back again. And usually that's either because mesh was not put in place the first time and that area has been allowed to open up again, or because the hole the hernia got around one side of the mesh and the mesh was not big enough to cover it up.
In those cases usually a hernia repair is required again.
