10 Australian Things You Would NEVER See Anywhere Else š³Added:
Now, before moving to Australia, I genuinely had no idea that some of these things existed. But after living here for the last few years, I realized that Australia has loads of normal things that you would never see anywhere else and I'm pretty sure don't exist in pretty much any other country. And that is what we're going to talk about in today's video as we talk about 10 things in Australia that you would never see anywhere else. Before we get into it though, make sure you give the video a like and subscribe. And yeah, let's get into it. Now, firstly, drive-thru bottle shops. I never knew this was a thing.
Now, this one is especially surprising because Australia's alcohol laws are very strict, especially compared to places like the UK where you can buy alcohol from pretty much any shop, supermarkets, corner shops, whatever. In Australia though, you have to buy it from a specific alcohol store. So, then when I saw drive-thru bottle shops, I was like, what? I had never seen anything like that. And it seems a bit mad to be honest, being able to drive through and just grab your beers. It's just the normal thing here in Australia.
I'm obviously from the UK. I've been to America, New Zealand. I've never seen anything like this. And I did not expect to see this in Australia. Next up is signs that say next fuel or next services 300 km away. Now, for you guys who have been to that outback in Australia, you will know exactly what I'm talking about. But I really don't think you will see signs like this in many other countries. You'll be driving through the outback and you'll see a sign and it will say no fuel for like 300 km, 500 km. Like it is crazy. If you're coming to Australia and you really want to get like a sense of scale of how big the country actually is, don't just go to Sydney and Melbourne because you won't be able to experience that. I would get a car or a coach and drive through the outback and oh my god, you will get a very real sense of how big Australia is. Tell me how many other countries around the world will you drive for 500 km and have no fuel, no services, no shops. Doing the outback was one of the best things I ever did because it's the real Australia. Next up, we've got schooners. Now, no one told me about this coming to Australia.
I went to a bar when I first got to Sydney and I was like, "Can I have a pint?" And then they give me a schooner.
They were like, "We only do schooners."
I was like, "What on earth is that?" In the UK, we've got half pints and pints.
I don't know what they've got in places like America, but I've never seen a schooner in my life. I've got to say though, having been in Australia in summer, it's actually a great idea because it stays so much colder than a pint. But do any other countries around the world do schooners? Because I'd never heard of that before coming to Australia. I was like, "That don't look like a pint to me." Next up is shark, crocodile, and jellyfish signs all at the same beach. Now, tell me, how many other beaches around the world will you see signs like this? Now, you might see a sign for one, but living up in far north Queensland near Canes, you'd go to a beach and there would be like a whole list of possible creatures you could see at the beach, like box jellyfish, crocodiles, sharks. You'd be like, "Is it even safe to be here?" It's one of the crazy things about Australia, especially in the north. The amount of creatures that live in the sea is pretty scary to be honest. I mean, the crocodiles is probably the worst, but coming from the UK, you never see anything like this. Obviously, we don't have that many dangerous creatures, but as a Brit coming to Australia and seeing all these signs, it immediately puts you in overthinking mode. Next up, we got chicken salt. Now, no one told me about this before coming to Australia, but I went to get some chips. I think I was in Sydney again, and I was like, "These chips are unbelievable." I was like, "What have they done to them?" And then it took me a few weeks to learn that chicken salt is actually a thing for you Brits and stuff. It's basically just chicken flavored salt and it is unbelievable. I actually haven't had it in a long time, but I ended up buying some when I was on the East Coast and you could just put it on everything and it tastes amazing, especially on chips.
I'm pretty sure that this is a fully Australian thing. I don't think there's any other countries around the world that do chicken salt. Let me know in the comments if you've seen it anywhere else, but if you're coming to Australia, definitely try it. Next up, we got spiders. Now, not in the sense of just finding a spider in your house.
Obviously, you can do that in any country, but let me tell you a quick story. The other week, we went up to a forest here in Perth to do a nice hike.
We were going to spend the day hiking.
You know, we got there, left the bus, and immediately we started seeing spiders about this big on every single tree. And it wasn't just the spiders that were the problem. It was the webs because we walked into about three webs.
So, we must have been hiking for about 5 minutes, honestly. And we must have seen 20 spiders the size of the palm of my hand at least. And you know what? Us being British, we literally just turned around straight away and went back to Perth because there was no chance we were doing a hike there. We were completely just like, "Oh, you know them things where everything that touches you, you're like, "Oh my god, that was a terrible experience." And I think I'd never seen spiders in Australia that bad until then. But it really does live up to that spiders in Australia myth. And how many other countries around the world would you go for a hike and see about 20 spiders in 5 minutes? And if you're thinking of going for a hike in Perth in May sort of time, don't do it because you're going to get a face full of spiders webs. It is terrifying.
Another thing that you would only ever see in Australia is bin chickens and parrots just roaming around the city. In the UK, you've got like pigeons in the city center and that is about it. But the first time I saw a bin chicken when I arrived in Sydney, I was like, "What on earth is that?" And there'll just be like crazy parrots just flying around in the city center. Like bright colored parrots. Like how crazy is that? And this is just one example, to be fair, of the amount of crazy wildlife that just lives side by side with people in Australia. It's not all in the middle of the outback. There are some pretty weird creatures that you just find roaming around the city. Like, what even is a bin chicken? Next up, we've got sunrise events. Now, I don't feel like any other country does sunrise events quite like Australia. Most other countries it would be more of a sunset sort of thing later kind of culture. But in Australia the amount of sunrise, run clubs, swims, you know, even markets and stuff like there is a whole massive culture around mornings, but specifically sunrise. Like I've never seen so many sunrise events in my life. And Australia just does it so much better than any other country, especially like the UK. If you were to organize a sunrise event in the UK, you'd get about three people turn up because everyone's like, "No, I'm staying in bed." Do you know what I mean? It's way too cold. But in Australia, everyone is down there first thing in the morning. And places like Sydney, especially on the East Coast where you get a nice sunrise. There is so many events on a regular basis. I don't think many other countries do it quite like that. Another thing is fly screens on houses. Now, I'd never seen this in my life in the UK. You just open the window and there's nothing there.
But in Australia, every house has like a mesh fly screen on the window.
Obviously, the flies and stuff are way worse in Australia. In the summer, it can be pretty unbearable with flies landing on your face. So, they're definitely needed, but I didn't realize it would just be the norm in Australia for every house to just have fly screens on every single window. It's something you definitely need, particularly in Northern Australia where it's humid and you get all the crazy creatures come out. It definitely saves you from finding them in your room. And lastly is McDonald's being called Mackers. Now, I know most countries have like a slang word for McDonald's. In the UK, we call it Mackey's, but in Australia, it's like the official term on adverts, uh, online. Even like McDonald's themselves will call it Mackers in Australia, whereas in the UK it's called McDonald's, but people just call it Mackey's as like a slang word. I don't think there's any other countries in the world where the name of McDonald's is completely changed to Mackers as the like official term. Is there any other countries in the world that completely change the names of things to slang like Australians do? Anyway, there is just some things that I have noticed. Let me know your thoughts in the comments and I will see you in the next
