A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea. The main types include: Proper Nouns (names of specific people, places, or things like Lahore, Ali, Eiffel Tower), Common Nouns (general names like city, boy, tower), Collective Nouns (representing groups like team, army, family), Abstract Nouns (representing ideas, qualities, or feelings like love, bravery, intelligence), and Material Nouns (representing physical substances like gold, water, iron). A single word can fall into multiple categories, with material nouns taking precedence over common nouns. Singular nouns refer to one person, place, thing, or idea, while plural nouns refer to more than one. Uncountable nouns (furniture, advice, information, luggage, scenery) cannot be counted and always take singular verbs, though they can be made countable with phrases like 'a piece of'. Some nouns are always plural (scissors, trousers, jeans, spectacles, pliers). Collective nouns can take singular or plural verbs depending on whether they act as a single unit or individuals. Possessive nouns show ownership using apostrophes (singular: dog's, plural: dogs'). For non-living things, use 'of' instead of apostrophe + 's' (the leg of the table). Compound nouns form plurals by adding 's' to the first word (Commanders in Chief).
