The gaming industry's platform fee controversy centers on the debate between platform operators (like Valve/Steam) and game publishers (like Epic Games) over revenue sharing models, where platforms typically take a percentage cut (30%) from game sales, with publishers arguing these fees are unjustified and platforms defending them as necessary for discovery and platform maintenance.

Steam does nothing and WINS, epic games destroyedAdded:
What another great day to flaunt my absolutely superior haircut to everyone.
But beyond that, you will not believe this.
The Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney, once again has decided to crash out on Gabe Newell and Valve for the most pettiest reasons ever. Now, if you follow these things a little bit, chances are you know that this is not the first time Tim Sweeney has decided to completely unreasonably crash out on Valve for the just the simple fact that people like them and hate Epic Games.
Which is already hilarious, honestly.
But what if I told you What if I told you that this guy has been crashing out on Valve for probably 10 years and we probably do not know even even the beginning of this because I'm serious. This guy has almost spent a decade at this point crashing out on Valve for different reasons. All these reasons have the common the fact that no one likes the Epic Games store because it's [ __ ] The fact that this guy, by the way, has literally taught Gen Z, Gen X, and mil- whatever generation that they are supposed to just check the Epic Games store time a little bit time to time and take the free stuff is, by the way, amazing. But this gets even better. Currently, currently, Tim Sweeney who honestly does deserve some kind of honorary CEO local award because he definitely does at this point is currently currently back giving backlash to Gabe Newell for increasing the Steam Deck pricing because, you know, of the of the RAM prices, the SSD, and whatnot. It is It is pretty hilarious. Valve needs the extra revenue to continue maintaining his mega yachts.
Yes. Yes, Tim.
Valve needs the extra revenue and I want to give Gabe the second mega yacht.
[ __ ] Well, Gabe can get five mega yachts. If I could give him a mega yacht, I would buy him a mega yacht. I'm not even going to lie. Gabe deserves it at this point. I don't care how many mega yachts this man has. It's not enough.
So, don't mention his mega yachts, Tim.
In any case, that's that alone is hilarious.
And it gets even more hilarious when you remember some of this guy's greatest hits. For example, 3 months ago, you probably have seen this one and then we're going to go into the new stuff, which is not actually new stuff, but it is definitely hilarious stuff.
I am not surprised this lawsuit is happening against Valve. This is for the monopoly lawsuit, by the way, just for context. Frankly, I thought it would have happened sooner, given that the uh the walled garden in the Apple and Google App Store was dismantled by court rulings in the European Union. My favorite quote from this article, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney voices his support for the $900 million lawsuit against Valve, criticizing its in-game purchase policy.
It's like a car dealership removing 30% of gas purchases. Yes, this guy has been absolutely on a war path to try and make Valve look bad at any way possible, and he's supporting the lawsuit against Valve for their 30% uh cut that they make they take from any game. By the way, which gets lower the more copies you sold, but you know, you're not going to mention these things because you're you're a disingenuous person and everyone sees that so not like it honestly matters too much at this point. But it's just the fact that how absolutely disingenuous this guy is.
Yes, by the way, Valve is currently in this lawsuit but it seems like Valve is doing pretty good because one of the 30% things is that Valve had a 30% fee since their inception and it has never changed. When Valve was small and no one cared about existence, it was 30% and now that Valve is a monopoly, it's still 30%. Also, this guy is trying to constantly bring up the Apple lawsuit and whatever. The difference is I understand this for Apple and whatnot because Apple literally throttles any other type of app except the app their own Apple App Store and whatnot and you know, similar things like that.
Steam doesn't. Steam is just a platform that you can use if you want. No one's forcing you.
And then you can buy games on it.
Now the fact that the developers feel a little bit differently about it, that's honestly on them and on pretty much everyone else. I honestly should have gotten that meme where everyone is just shooting themselves in the cranium or small to playing themselves in the crania. I mean YouTube and Valve is just there standing and being like, why?
Why? Why are you doing this? Because Valve does nothing and Vince is not a meme. It's literally a reality.
Tim Sweeney's epic rant to Valve the 30% platform cut. The guy never stops. People people reported on this so much and by the way, this guy was cooking about this many many times. It's not like he said this once and then he was like, I'm done with it." No, no, no, no, no. He He mentioned this multiple times over the course of this being a Tim at Tim. Wow.
And it is hilarious. Here he's at a November 26, 2025.
And he replies to a tweet, "Steam and all digital marketplaces need to drop the 'made with AI' label. It doesn't matter anymore. No idea who Matt Worksman is. Probably Probably some nepo baby." And then our boy Tim Sweeney replies, the CEO and Epic Games founder and CEO. Beautiful.
Beautiful, Tim. Beautiful.
"Agreed. The AI tag is relevant to art, exhibits, and authorship disclosure, and to digital and to digital content content licensing marketplaces where buyers need to understand the right right situation. It makes no sense for game stores where AI will be involved in nearly all future productions." And he back And this is probably the most stone Tim Sweeney crash out about this. The fact that Valve just literally added the AI tag and this guy just thought that that's a personal attack on him. Kind of crazy.
Kind of hilarious, obviously. But that's what you would expect.
>> [laughter] >> Again, this guy is just so insane. He just He just can't stop.
He won't stop. It's It's great. There's, by the way, a song about what can't stop won't stop.
In any case.
Oh, man. It's good. It's good. And he again, when he goes on these rants, he doesn't stop. This was just the first that he continues and expresses these opinions more and then he just stops at some point. And you know what's funny?
All of this started Well, we know that the first time we have heard about this was it a back in 2018. That's right, the big 2018 boys.
Anyone remember that? I don't. I don't actually.
And the this is it. This email thread was followed up in 2018 after Valve implemented a sliding scale for its royalty payment to reduce its cut to the highest grossing games to 25 or even 20% citing a network effects.
Uh network effects of big games. Sweeney reported responded to this in a support of smaller developers. Well, meow.
Uh but all in the context of Epic's infamous legal battle with Apple, wrote Sweeney. Let later this this week will be escalating a blah blah blah with Apple. And you know, this was one of the things. This is what I mentioned previously.
Steam even reduces the cut from 30% to 25 to 20 if you sell enough copies.
And Sweeney during his lawsuit with Apple also talked with Valve.
And he WAS PRETTY [ __ ] UPSET.
He was He was pretty upset because, you know, Steam's Steam's 30% is not justifiable because it's not worth it enough for discovery. Doesn't give enough. It's not a good price. You should lower down to zero for every Epic game, obviously. And Fortnite, we want Fortnite on Steam but you know, we don't want to pay you anything. So, you know, do that, please.
And then the most infamous thing happened.
Then he continued taking out his anger on Valve. Right, now you [ __ ] are telling the world that the strong and powerful get special treatment. Well, 30% or a percent is for the little people.
Um you're all for prolonged battles if Apple tries to keep this monopoly and 30% by cutting backroom deals with big publishers to keep them quiet.
Okay, so this guy's pretty heated, obviously. This guy's pretty heated.
He's He's not enjoying Valve, okay? He's not liking it. He's He knows he's winning against Apple.
It's looking good, so you know, his his cock's pretty high-rated, you know what I'm saying?
And to all of this garbage, crap, and BS this thread was then internally forwarded by a Valve's COO, Chief Financial Officer, Scott Lynch, to both Gabe Newell and Johnson saying, "You mad, bro?"
This is And this And this is the moment that By the way, this this is Valve literally You probably have heard of this. This is the This is the infamous Valve response to this guy's full and unquashable meltdown with "You mad, bro?" And that's it. Which is hilarious, okay? That guy went on multiple emails, high-rated, about how Valve is somehow disingenuous, bad, and evil, blah blah blah blah blah.
And Valve just Valve just emailed him with "You mad, bro?" and called it a day.
And that was nearly 10 years ago. And ever since, our boy Tim Sweeney has been pretty much waking up thinking about Valve and going up and going to sleep crying about Gabe and some form or fashion and every chance he's get he's going to get he's he's going to crash out on valve and I'm sure many more crashes are going to happen because this man has completely lost it.
In any case, it is hilarious then out of thin air. Bye.
