Masking is a coping skill where neurodivergent individuals mimic neurotypical behaviors to fit in, but this constant performance creates significant mental and emotional exhaustion, often leading to meltdowns or crashes after periods of sustained masking; creating safe spaces where individuals can unmask and feel comfortable is essential for their well-being.

Viviana Explains Masking in Neurodivergent IndividualsAdded:
wanted to talk to you about masking.
It's a skill that our kids develop to fit in and they usually mimic neurotypical traits, right? And while it can be useful a useful tool to navigate the world around them, it comes at a metabolic cost.
Basically, it's exhausting. It's a show when they get home or to a friend's house or to an aunt and uncle's house or even over here at our IOP, they crash, right? They have this meltdown because they've been having to hold it together and having to mask the entire day.
At our twin IOP, one of our goals we try is to identify some spaces where they can unmask and feel safe. It can look in different ways.
We can have a safe corner or provide them with some noise canceling headphones, some fidgets, shut our blinds to provide a safe urgent space for them.
See you later.
