In Chapter 9 of 'I Am a Cat', Natsume Soseki uses satire to critique wartime nationalism by depicting the cat's owner ignoring a nobleman's request for donations to celebrate Japan's victory in the Russo-Japanese War. This literary technique reflects Soseki's broader anxiety about Japan's trajectory, which he expressed in 'Sanshirō' through a dialogue where a stranger warns that Japan is 'heading toward ruin.' These literary works anticipated the historical reality of Japan's increasing militarization and eventual path toward the Pacific War, demonstrating how Soseki's social critique transformed into prophetic commentary on national direction.
