[00:08:29]Then came the flood. Between roughly 1880 and 1924, more than 2 million Jews left the Russian Empire in Eastern Europe, fleeing poverty and waves of violent persecution.

[00:08:48]They poured through the immigration halls at Ellis Island and settled above all in the dense urban centers of the Northeast in New York, New Jersey, Boston, and Philadelphia.

[00:20:14]Their father's father's lineages looked essentially Iberian, indistinguishable from the general population of the old country. They are serious scientists and historians reading the same evidence and seeing different things in it. Part of why this argument burned so hot is that it was never only about science. For a family that has carried quiet traditions across generations, being told by a researcher that those traditions are genuine and ancient can feel like long overdue validation.
