Leep is a breakthrough injectable HIV prevention medication that provides protection for 6 months after a single injection, requiring only two doses per year. This innovative prevention method addresses adherence challenges associated with daily oral tablets and bi-monthly injections, making it more accessible for individuals at risk of HIV infection. The medication is being rolled out in Anambra State, Nigeria, as part of the national HIV prevention initiative championed by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) and funded by the Global Fund, making it freely available at designated health facilities.

So in Nigeria, not only in Nigeria, in the world as a whole, there's this very dreaded uh infection that is really an epidemic in the world at large. And many of us do know this infection is known as HIV infection. And for a while now in the management of this HIV, I've gone through several processes. Yes, I've gone through several processes and now we are currently at the stage where they are getting prevention. Previously they had prevention for this HIV which was in form of tablets. Yes. But a lot of people struggle to take this tablet because for you to be get protection from this tablet, you must have to take this tablets once every day. and which was like a kind of uh deterrent for persons who aim to uh get the prevention package against HIV. So some years ago too they brought up a prevention package in injectable. Yes.
Which was kabla. Yes. In the last verse around sometimes this year the cabla came up of which I've been there before but recently you came to anra yes yes the kaba was injectable for the prevention of this HIV but the al the cab also have an issue in that you take it every two two months. Yeah, you take it every two two months and not everybody want to be getting injected every two two months and also another thing with Dabla was that the injection sites after getting injection was very painful. Yes, this was that was what also deter a lot of people from using Dabla but finally thank God here now the one now that you can take and to last you give you protection for good 6 months is now finally here in Anra state. It might be new to us although it might have entered several states before several country before but to us in Anabra state this is a new innovative and something to be to applaud. So what can you say about this?
>> Okay. So uh as we all know HIV it's a immuno deficiency virus that affect the immune system of individuals. So while the United Nations uh unique goals initially talks about achieving epidemic control by the year 2030 and we want to count Nigeria lucky and by extension state lucky to have this breakthrough medication, breakthrough injection, breakthrough drug for prevention of HIV uh produced by Gileia services. So Africa Nigeria happens to be one of the few countries that is rolling out and adopted LE as a prep option. So we are happy as a state and as an implementing partner that finally we have the magic bullet the breakthrough medication that prevents HIV and the in 6 month as a matter of fact just jab once in 6 months and within a period of 2 years you just take two jabs. So I'm free from >> so talk talk us through this the process of getting this service will it be free and apart from it being free or being paid for what are the what are measures put in place to ensure that uh innovations like this are sustainable.
>> Okay so thank you. uh like we all know prep has been in in Nigeria for if I'm not mistaken in 2007 but routinely there are injections into the system just uh uh 2 years ago there was rolled out of cartography injectable prep long acting injectable prep that's the two monthly as addition to the prep option so today we now have six monthly injectable option which is the len Nakafa injection. So how do we ensure sustainability? As a matter of fact, uh this injectable prep is rolled out by the government of Nigeria uh championed by National Agency for the Control of AIDS National NASCAR National AIDS STI control program. So they are the one implementing these across the eight pilot states in Nigeria and Alamra is part of the global for states. So we are lucky and uh this is available across several sites in an amra state.

We have a comprehensive health center an extension of nah. We have coo those are also extension of nut. So once you just walk into the facility tell them you are going to the heart to heart clinic or any entry point that you are here to get learn they just ask you you are here to get learn what is learn then it's an prevention education. So once you just go there, walk into any facility is free of charge. If you are asked to pay any money, we'll be dropping our details to complain. This medication has been paid for by the global fund. Global fund is an uh a donor agency that has funds across country. As a matter of fact, Nigeria is also contributing to global fund. So it's more like your own money used to pay for this medication. So it's free. If anybody charge you can just number that man we have said it is free and it's available across the seven facilities CCP states.
