Explosive STAR TREK news Paramount plan to fix Trek revealedAñadido:
There is potentially explosive news about what Paramount are planning to do with Star Trek, and we can exclusively tell you what it is.
Welcome to the Tack and Pulse podcast, your place for sci-fi news, rumor, and debate.
Our tachyon pulse has been unable to completely penetrate the anomaly.
Now, the interesting bit here is they weren't asked to look at new Trek.
So, this video is going to be a bit 2 + 2 = 4, all right? We've got the information, but we're trying to figure out exactly what it means. But, if it means what we think it means, this is actually going to bring Star Trek back post-Kurtzman in a way that is going to really excite fans. Now, I did a video last week about how I speak to somebody that does consultancy work as part of their company, and other companies do it as well, for Paramount. They were asked, a long time ago to be honest, to look at all the different franchises that Paramount had, um as the new owners were coming in, and make recommendations. They actually recommended back then, this would have been a year ago or so, um to actually not renew Kurtzman's deal. There would be a short-term financial hit to that decision, but actually in the long term, it was more beneficial to bring Star Trek back in-house and produce just through CBS Studios with far more from Paramount bosses.
Since then, though, they have been requested to follow up. One of the things they did is they did a piece of work on Star Fleet Academy.
>> [snorts] >> They The decision there, and the report that they sent back had a big part of the decision to actually cancel Star Fleet Academy.
They broke that down the viewing figures, etc., down into the different demographics. They did a big part of the work was looking at social media, YouTube videos like mine, etc., etc., to get the fans' opinion. Or, you know, they use AI to do it basically. Um but also using good old-fashioned questionnaires to get fan opinion. All of this was put together, recommendations for what they felt Paramount should do with Star Fleet Academy um for the future was made. This is not unusual. Paramount and big studios will do some of this work themselves quite often, but also they do sort of pay consultancies, etc., to do a lot of it themselves.
So, that happened.
But, there was another piece of work being done that my source couldn't tell me about, but now has told me that they can actually They did tell me about it, they just said I couldn't share it. But, what they were asked to do was look back on Star Trek, current and old. I did say to you that they were able to share with me that the rewatch figures for Braga Trek and the original series were way better than Kurtzman era Star Trek. Now, they had to do a bit of maths with this because a brand new show is always going to get certain amount of rewatch compared to older shows, but they use these algorithms and things to see what shows are basically have more interest in them than um newer shows. So, they have information about how to figure that out. What their result was, what they recommended back to Paramount was that Braga Trek and the original series get way better rewatches and that new Trek just doesn't. They may get okay viewing figures in the first week or two, but they go off a cliff after that.
And people just are not rewatching these shows. Now, as I say, newer shows don't get rewatched straight away. You get new fans coming in and then go back to the original series. But again, they have algorithms to figure out exactly what those different viewing figures mean.
The original series, Braga Trek, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise are just more popular with fans.
So, they then did a further piece of work, and they were asked to look at viewing figures, rewatch figures, etc., for all of Trek, not including new Trek, and I'm going to come back to that because that's really the nub of the point here.
They were asked to look at TNG, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, and the original series, look at which series was being reported as the most popular as a whole. I could tell you it was Deep Space Nine. That gets most of the rewatch views, apparently.
And um actually to be fair, the original series probably does. She actually did raise that point with me, but there are more episodes of DS9, there are less episodes of the original series, so that comes into it as well.
And again, they use the algorithms to come up with a summary.
Their summary was DS9 is actually the most rewatched of all of the Star Trek series. And I can understand that because a lot of the battle sequences and things are just tremendous, and those are specific episodes they get to watch.
They did then look at those specific episodes that get rewatches. Now, what the consultancy firm was asked to do, and this is interesting, is not just to look at what episodes are rewatched, but then to summarize what was in those episodes. Basically, what made them so rewatchable.
Now, it's going to be things like The Best of Both Worlds, There Are Four Lights, etc., etc., that get good rewatches. There are iconic episodes of the original series, example, that gets good rewatches.
What the consultancy firm was asked to do was summarize, though, what made those episodes so rewatchable. What happened in those episodes? Give summaries of that. Try to break it down into categories, something they could empirically look at.
Why?
What I'm told is, by this source, that they're trying over Paramount to figure out basically a formula for Star Trek.
What do people actually like about the show? What stories actually struck a chord with fans most often?
Now, the interesting bit here is they weren't asked to look at new Trek. They were not asked to do this with new Trek.
That very heavily implies, and this source has said they agree, that they know new Trek has not been successful, and they want to move away from it. Now again, we actually know this cuz Paramount have told us this, that they want a fresh take on Star Trek. But, that fresh take on Star Trek was assumed maybe to be something completely different.
This, though, tends to suggest that it's not. What they want to do is go back to what Star Trek used to be. And what they're trying to do is figure out, using all this empirical information, what it was about Star Trek that fans actually like. What episodes traditionally worked, and what episodes didn't. What is the secret formula? What is that secret ingredient that makes us Trek fans so excited about Star Trek?
The what is it that makes us go back again and again?
There's another point though here to make.
The previous regime of Paramount seemed to be obsessed with getting new fans.
We've always said that's a problem.
We've always said, uh particularly on this channel, that that is a terrible business model.
And it seems that the new regime of Paramount agree because uh this would suggest that they are focusing in what traditional Trekkies love about Star Trek, about Braga Trek, about Roddenberry Trek, and they're not so bothered about Kurtzman Trek.
That again heavily implies that they're moving away from this business model of just get new fans and to hell with existing Star Trek fans.
I think that is really, really good. And to be honest as well, I'm glad they're not looking at something like Picard season 3 or Strange New Worlds when they're doing this piece of work because those series were have been relatively popular.
What they're doing instead is looking at what traditionally Star Trek was.
Look, Picard season 3, I really enjoyed it first time around, but there was an awful lot of fan service there. There was an awful lot of just relying on nostalgia. I promise you, watch that series again, there's loads of mistakes in it. I don't think that Terry Matalas is walking on water like a lot of people say. And actually, don't forget he he wrote season 2 as well, which is not a good series of Star Trek.
And even though he's incredibly passionate about Star Trek, and I think if he showruns a series, he would give us something that we could really get excited about. Look, bring back legacy.
Let's do it.
The evidence suggests actually that when he does Star Trek, it's not amazing.
Um as I say, rewatch Picard season 3 if you haven't.
Watch it quite critically.
I promise you, you'll see fault in it.
I did anyway.
But, this work that's being done is really interesting. And to be honest, the source that I spoke to agreed with my understanding of what it meant. And that is an insider that does this for a living. So, that again carries a lot of water.
I'm hoping that the new bosses of Paramount have taken this empirical evidence on board and are using it to inform their future decisions. If they are and they make the right decisions, it would seem that we're going to be getting Star Trek back to what Star Trek fans actually want.
And that will be really exciting for the future of the franchise.
During this 60th anniversary, we can maybe look back on Star Trek, remember what we love about it so much, and get excited again about the future.
Get into the comments and tell me what you think about this interesting information. Look, there is a possibility here that they've done this work that they've charged been charged a lot of money to do, and it's just a comparison with Kurtzman Trek, and they're going to go in a completely different direction. Do you think that's likely though, considering again the cost of this work?
