Residents of Plastic View informal settlement in Tshwane, South Africa, are rebuilding their homes after a devastating fire destroyed most structures. The community faces significant challenges including fire vulnerability due to plastic structures, unemployment, crime, and inadequate waste management. Despite government promises of relocation assistance and support from organizations like Gift of the Givers, residents continue to struggle with basic shelter needs, with 254 adults and 71 children affected. The video highlights the ongoing tension between informal settlement residents and municipal authorities regarding the right to build permanent brick and mortar structures versus the current plastic structures that leave them vulnerable to fire hazards.

Plastic View residents want permission to build permanent structuresAdded:
Fire victims in China's plastic view informal settlement have already started rebuilding their homes. Our reporter Juliet Joseph has been speaking to them throughout the morning and joins us now live from there. Juliet, I see a number of those homeowners working tirelessly to ensure that those structures are up before sunset.
>> Certainly, Katlego, and they've been up by 6:00 or so to try and ensure that they get, you know, the stay structures built up a place of shelter to lay their heads. The ones we've spoken to, most of them have told us that the contributions and donations they received from organizations in the form of mattresses and some meals did really make a bit of a difference. Some of them are almost complete with building their structures, while others they still, you know, banging onto the rods and the you know, iron sheets, still digging to put the poles in and some already just creating almost a temporary structure, so to speak. And at the moment, I do have the gentleman, Katlego, who is, you know, owning the structure that you see right here in the shot with a plastic here in a plastic view informal settlement. As you can see, I'm just going to quickly move out of shot there for you. As you can see the structure here, I'm just going to quickly chat to him. Um, thank you so much, Ndatemane Seleka, for your time. Tell us, are you done, as we can see there, are you done building your shelter or do you still have more work to do?

Katlego, oh, as you heard her saying that there are a lot of challenges that remain in this informal settlement.
Challenges of unemployment, challenges of crime. You know, waste as we drove here, we could see a lot of waste on the floor. And also her saying that according to her, government is not promising much. But government was here on Thursday, you know, also talking about issues of relocation and saying that they will be working with EMS, you know, to try and help the people of this informal settlement. Katlego, but we do know that Gift of the Givers will be here shortly to also render their support in helping the people of Plastic View Informal Settlement, Katlego.
>> Some food aid certainly is needed in situations of this kind. Those residents of Plastic View out in Soshanguve rebuilding their lives after fire having ravaged most of those homes.
