GameStop periodically opens their retro vault to make rare and valuable games available on their website, typically about one to two weeks before launching a buy two get one promotion, which creates a predictable pattern for collectors to anticipate and take advantage of rare game availability.

Did you notice what GameStop just did?Added:
Mic check112. It's the Y2K collector.
And some of you may or may not have noticed what GameStop just did because they do this all the time. And hopefully I'm wrong about this, but we'll know by tomorrow. But over the last week to week and a half, GameStop opened up the vault. They opened up the retro vault.
Um, and they put a bunch of extremely rare and valuable games. uh they made them available on their website after about three to four months of pretty much only making the most common games available when it comes to their retro stuff. So, if you've been paying attention, I've seen all kinds of rare games from Haunting Grounds on PlayStation 2, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3. Um, I've seen, you know, Darkwing Duck on the NES, uh, Gargoyles Quest 2. Uh, I've seen, you know, you name it for the, uh, the Genesis, all types of rare Genesis stuff. Uh, Earthbound on the Super Nintendo.
um you know, just a bunch of really rare stuff they've made available on their website. And typically what I've noticed when it comes to their pattern of of how they do this is they will open up the vault and let all these games out typically a week to a week and a half before they do the buy two get one promo. Um, and I don't know if they do this so that they can get max value for all of the higherend more valuable games. I'm not sure if that's why they do it. Um, but I tend to notice that.
And so that's kind of what I've noticed over the past week. Now, the day that I'm filming this, this is a Saturday.
Usually all of GameStop's new promotions begin on a Sunday because Sunday starts the new week. And I believe we're getting ready to come up on a pro member um it's like a double pro member week.
And usually within that double, you know, pro member or however they label it, usually in that time frame, they offer a buy 2 get one. Now, I could be wrong because about a week or two ago, they did the buy more, save more promo where they were giving folks up to 30% off when they bought six or more um pre-owned games. So, maybe I'm wrong about this, but I'm usually not. Now, I have been able to grab some really cool and uncommon retro stuff, um, not online, but at my local GameStop. So, um, there's definitely been some success there.
um was able to pick up Wario where Twisted um which is one that I never had on the Game Boy Advance. So that one was really new to me. Was stoked to grab that. War Land 4, Mario Party Advance, Yoshi Topsy Turvy, and Tamagotchi. So these were all really clean um loose cartridges for the Game Boy Advance and the original Game Boy. And so I went ahead and took advantage of that. And then at the local store that I was at, they did have some complete inbox NES games. Um, I love when you can find complete and box NES games because they'll typically charge you the loose price. Um, because GameStop still has no way of distinguishing between complete and box and loose. And so, um, when it comes to certain games, they're just going to charge the loose price across the board. But if it's a really expensive game, they'll try to charge somewhere in between what like CIB and Lucos for. Um I guess to try to capture as much uh revenue as they can. Um but it's kind of on a gametoame basis, really console to console basis. But I tend to see that you have more luck on the NES. Um unless it's a really really rare NES game, then they're going to kind of stick it to you. um especially if it's a game like Gunack or Kickmaster or Snow Brothers or anything like that.
Um now the funny part is is that I recently picked up some of those rare NES games earlier in the year and while most of them were like around $90, there were a couple that were a little bit over 100. But in retrospect, I mean most of those games complete in box, like especially a game like Gunack is probably well over $500 um complete in box, maybe even close to a,000. I'm not sure. I haven't checked. But um but yeah, whenever it comes to NES games, if you can find them complete and box at GameStop, that's always great. Popeye was like 20 bucks and this game completing box is like a a little over 150. This box is not in the best shape.
Um so, you know, I don't think that this would ever sell for 160 bucks. Um but it is cool to have a complete and box copy of Popeye. Very popular arcade game. And then Guardian Legend is one that I had loose. So, it's actually cool to get this complete in box. And then Pitfall, which whether this is loose or complete, it's still really not that um expensive to get. I think this is a $10 game, loose or complete. Um I think it's always interesting when you can get a very good condition tray for these cardboard um Genesis games. Usually the trays are all beat up and so um whenever you can get that, that's always good. Um, but again, you know, I hope I'm wrong. You know, we'll know in less than 24 hours whether or not I was right, but I always see this happen. GameStop will open up the vault, I mean, all the way up, and they will put all of the games that they know most retro game collectors are looking for.
They'll put them on their website and make them available about a week to a week and a half before they do a buy to get one. I could be wrong, but we'll see. Was I able to take advantage of some of those uh games that were made available? I did. I did buy a few of those and I'll have those ready for you once they come in. Um, whenever you order from GameStop online, it's always kind of like a 50/50 chance. Um, even if you're buying a a loose cartridge game, there's a chance that you might get like an old random video store sticker on it or maybe there's label damage or, you know, the cartridge is discolored. Um, if you're buying a disc based game, there's always a chance that it's not complete or the disc is, you know, cracked or chipped or scratched to death. I mean, there's all kinds of risks that you take when you buy from GameStop uh online. So, you kind of have to take it with a grain of salt and just know that there's a possibility that you might have to return whatever it is you're ordering. But I do think it's I do always think it's funny when um you don't see any like really rare or uncommon stuff on their website and then just out of the blue, bam, you just start seeing all of this rare stuff just be made available on their website. And what's encouraging to me is that a lot of the rare stuff doesn't last as long as it used to. Um there's a lot more people attacking GameStop's website. um whenever I see, you know, and you can tell when something's recently been posted because if you go to like, you know, if you see like a rare game um on their site, um and it's like it's still showing up as like one of the more recent games that were a was available, then that means the game was probably available and someone just bought it right before you got to it. Um so if you go to their website now, like even if you look under like the Super Nintendo games, you'll see like Chrono Trigger was recently sold. Um, Earthbound, like I said before, Earthbound was recently sold. Um, so some really kind of like rare games um that were re recently sold there. So, um, it's Saturday today. Um, if you're thinking about, you know, utilizing their retro store, jump on their website, see what's available. But I'm almost positive that tomorrow is going to start a buy 2 get one promo. I would not be shocked. And I can almost guarantee you that by the time the buy two get one promo starts, there won't be any like real like hard-hitting retro games. It'll be a lot of the common stuff that you always see in their website. Uh, but let me know if you guys noticed this and I'll catch you in the next one. It's the Y2K collector. Take it easy.
