[00:00:02]In local news, one week after massive vandalism forced it to close, the Kinderare Learning Center in West Witchaw is back open. The center sustained more than $100,000 in damage after six young boys ransacked the building. School officials weren't so sure they could get the building open by today, but as News Channel 3's Leon Lee explains, thanks to parents and volunteers, it happened.

[00:00:27]It is quite a contrast to what this place looked like a week ago. There's still the smell of fresh paints. But for the most part, everyone and everything are getting back to normal. And both parents and children are thrilled to be back.

[00:00:38]>> Oh, I'm just delighted. Just delighted to see it back. The kids back in their own home and their own familiar surroundings. And James is really excited to be back here, too.

[00:00:49]>> The return home provided for a festive atmosphere. It was made possible by volunteers who worked frantically over the weekend to get the center reopened.

[00:00:56]>> I think it means a lot. A lot of them were really happy this morning and you know, a lot of our kids have been with us for a long time and I think the kids were just as excited as we were.

[00:01:05]>> I knew here and I haven't I haven't been here much because of what happened to the center.

[00:01:11]>> You give me that yellow.

[00:01:12]>> And what happened to the center was nearly total devastation. Not everyone was sure it could reopen this quickly.

[00:01:19]>> It did not look good. They did a good job putting this back together, didn't they?

[00:01:23]>> Yeah. And they even bought us new toys, and I really liked it.

[00:01:28]>> Not everything is complete. More supplies need to be ordered. There's no carpet, stove, or refrigerator.

[00:01:35]>> But still, the kids are here right now.

[00:01:37]That seems to be all that matters in Witchah. Leon Lebo, News Channel 3.

[00:01:42]>> No charges yet filed against the four 10-year-olds involved in the vandalism.

[00:01:46]The other two boys are not old enough to face charges. In national news, the Clinton healthc care reform controversy has thrown Medicare into the middle of the battle. And many senior citizens groups are becoming more and more concerned. As part of the plan, $35 billion in Medicare funds would be cut while still another alternative would put caps on entitlements such as Social Security and Medicaid. Either way, it's an attack on the elderly. According to one group, >> it's flawed. Band-aids won't stop the hemorrhaging.

[00:02:18]We can't solve America's health care crisis with additional Medicare and Medicaid cuts.

[00:02:26]That will only shift more of the cost burden to beneficiaries, businesses, and also to states.

[00:02:34]>> The American Association of Retired Persons says cuts in Medicare would put the program and national healthc care reform in jeopardy. It appears the president is ready to nominate his current Secretary of the Interior to the Supreme Court. Sources in Washington say Mr. Clinton has been consulting by phone regarding the possible nomination of Bruce Babbot. The Interior Department says the FBI has been conducting its background check of Babbot since the weekend. Well, public schools must open their doors to religious groups. That's what the nation's highest court ruled today, saying groups must be allowed in after for after hours meetings as long as non-religious groups are allowed to use the buildings. News Channel 3 Skip Loger explains what that means for schools nationwide.

[00:03:21]In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court ruled that if public school districts allow some groups >> allegiance to the flag, >> like the Cub Scouts, the Girl Scouts, or the Cancer Society to meet in public school buildings after hours, then religious groups must be allowed to do the same thing. This case will have very widespread impact on all kinds of practices uh across the country concerning what can be done with school grounds after hours. And it is a a tremendous concern because here's all this property uh meeting rooms, buildings, uh they're there unused after hours.

[00:04:04]The case involved the Lamb's Chapel Church on Long Island, which asked to show a film to the general public in a public school room.

[00:04:12]>> Turn your heart.

[00:04:17]>> The school district said no.

[00:04:19]>> A number of people in any community might see their own public funds being used to promote a religion which they were not interested in promoting.

[00:04:26]>> Nothing in life matters except love for God. Keeping the church out, some claim was discrimination.

[00:04:34]>> The school makes its facilities available to some of those groups, but not others. That's the government violating free speech.

[00:04:40]>> And the Supreme Court agreed, ruling that while school districts can bar all groups from using public school facilities after hours, once they open the doors, they have to be open for all groups, even religious ones.

[00:04:55]>> If they let this group meet, they've got to let every other group meet. In Washington, I'm Skip Loer. News Channel 3 First News.

[00:05:03]>> Also today, the Supreme Court let stand a ruling that allows studentled prayer graduation ceremonies in some states.

[00:05:10]But the American Civil Liberties Union says it will continue to fight the ruling. Residents of a small North Carolina town are struggling to cope with the murders of three people. Their bodies found in a tiny grocery store.

[00:05:22]Two men and a woman were found shot and stabbed while in the store last night.

[00:05:26]Three others also suffered gunshot and stab wounds. One of the victims had his throat slashed. Authorities say robbery appears to be the motive for the violence. No suspects are in custody and the investigation goes on. A California lawyer says he'll try to prove his client was temporarily insane when she allegedly shot the man accused of molesting her son. Ellie Nestler today pleaded innocent by reason of insanity to the April shooting death of Daniel Mark Driver. Driver was gunned down in a courtroom during his preliminary hearing. That court appearance was to determine whether he would stand trial for allegedly molesting Nestler's 11-year-old son.

[00:06:05]Stranded students, hundreds of them, have a beef with a Boston travel agency today. That's because a Massachusetts company left them high and dry less than 24 hours before they were scheduled to board a plane for Paris. The travel agency that booked their trip and scheduled overseas trips for students in at least 19 other states went belly up and that left thousands of students with their bags packed but with nowhere to go. Had scattered reports of le lighter damage in Sumar County and up around Manhattan and Fort Riley. So, it's been a busy day. Oh, yeah. Let's take a look at our current conditions.

[00:09:20]And you can see through the legs of our cloud camera the thunderstorms over eastern Butler and Greenwood County.

[00:09:27]They tower 55,000 ft above the ground.

[00:09:30]But in Witchah we have a sunny sky.

[00:09:31]Temperature 80. Due points dried out to 59. Humidity 49%. Pressure continuing to fall at 2962. Our wind south at 21 miles an hour. And if we take a look at temperatures across the state, 92 degrees in the dry air at Medicine Lodge, 90 in the dry air at Hutchinson.

[00:09:48]But we have the more humid air over Witchah. That's why we are cooler. 87° in Salina, only 75° in Goodland. We still have a tornado watch in effect from Sedwick and Sar counties northeast to the Nebraska border. This in effect until 8:00 this evening. Our satellite photograph shows a huge complex of thunderstorms that developed over the upper Midwest this morning and caused more than 5 inches of rain and flooding in the Chicago area. Meanwhile, strong thunderstorms have developed over northeast, south central Kansas and southwestern Oklahoma. Let's take a look at the NEXRAD from the National Weather Service at Mid-Continent Airport. And we can show you the strong thunderstorm that is now in the uh Eureka area moving toward the northeast and still has the potential to cause damaging winds as well as large hail. So folks in Greenwood County should be prepared for severe weather. thunderstorm with possible gusty winds and small hail is now located from Smileyberg to just east of Leyon and Bowmont moving toward the northeast toward Greenwood County. A developing severe thunderstorm is northeast of Enid. We'll have to keep an eye on that in case it should cross the border uh toward 6:00 and then strong thunderstorms are in northeastern Kansas. But this is the front and you can see the front's actually creeping to the west just to the west of Witchah.

[00:11:06]And as long as the front is to our west, there's still at least a chance that thunderstorms will redevelop in our area. So, let's take a look at our forecast for the state of Kansas tonight. Scattered thunderstorms, some of which could be strong from South Central to eastern Kansas. Partly cloudy skies in north central and northeastern Kansas. Uh low temperatures tonight from 47° at Oberlin to 67 at Chinut, Kansas City, 64 in Witchah. Tomorrow, look for scattered thunderstorms again in South Central and eastern Kansas. Partly cloudy in the north and west. Highs from 71 in Overberland to 85 at Chinutan, Kansas City, 82 for Witchah. And we now have a severe thunderstorm warning till 6:00 for eastern Greenwood County. Folks in Utopia, Hamilton, Virgil, and Ton uh should seek shelter as this storm could produce 70 mph winds and large hail.

[00:14:34]The death toll now stands at 8 after a freighter carrying hundreds of Chinese immigrants ran ground yesterday.

[00:14:40]Authorities now believe the ship deliberately ran ground so the aliens could flee to shore under cover of darkness. 280 of them were rescued and today boarded buses bound for detention centers. Others remain hospitalized for exposure and minor injuries. Many are asking for political asylum. 10 days after the torching deaths of five Turkish immigrants, arsonists in Germany have launched more attacks. Police suspect the latest attacks are the work of extreme writers. They say two baby carriages were set ablaze at one home and a rocking horse was torched at another. There was only one minor injury in the incidents.

[00:15:17]Even though European studies indicate it doesn't delay the onset of the AIDS virus, the US says it will continue to prescribe the drug for patients. A leading American AIDS researcher at the international conference in Berlin said other studies suggest ACT is effective especially if used in the early stages of the deadly disease.

[00:15:38]Well, there was quite an unusual conference in Witchah this weekend and St. Joseph Medical Center brought in 22 brains to help out. This is the real thing, the gray matter. Real brains were used to teach professionals who work with head injuries. But as HealthBeat reporter Debbie Bush tells us, there were others who were interested.

[00:16:43]>> Now I've just taken this brain and cut it in half and we can see the medial surface of the brain. This portion back here is where you see if there's damage to this region. Uh there are cells in here that help maintain consciousness or keep you awake. And >> that's why I was putting a com.

[00:16:59]>> Right. Exactly. You had sufficient damage to your brain stem and the cells within here that help you maintain consciousness that their activity was depressed and you end up going into a coma as a result of that.

[00:17:10]>> Medical students do don't even usually have this opportunity. They watch a prosection which is where the instructor does it and they just observe. So this is something that a lot of medical students don't even have the chance to participate in.

[00:17:20]>> The conference was for people who work with brain injuries, but even for those nonprofessionals, it was a rare opportunity to see what's really in the most mysterious part of the body, the brain. But, uh, they're they're, you know, 19, 20 year olds just like we are. They're no different. Just pitch my strength. You know, it'll be all right.

[00:23:27]>> Freshman Woff will start for the Shockers and we'll have to worry mostly about baseball America's most outstanding player, Brooks Kishnik. His 376 batting average, 19 homers, and 80 runs batted in are impressive. But like most of the Longhorn's better hitters, he hits from the left side. The lefty Woff has been nasty to lefty hitters.

[00:23:49]When you ask the Longhorns about a Witchah State, you get the same answer you'd get from any team up here. They feel the pressure to score early.

The KU6 man has won something called the Billy Baseline Award. It's an honor given out in Kansas City to unheralded players who devote money hours to make their team successful. Wood certainly fits that criteria. The award associated with the National Coaches Organization. Now, another athlete from our region taking aim at a world title tonight in the boxing ring. Tommy Morrison, who has fought in Witchah and calls Kansas City home, will battle the hefty one, George Foreman, for the WBO heavyweight title.
