Athletes who are naturally hard on themselves may be more affected by coaching criticism than those who are naturally more self-critical, as the internal dialogue of self-berating can compound external feedback and create a negative cycle that affects performance and mental well-being.

Last week we did an exercise where I had the girls write down “what do you wish your coaches knewAjouté :
It's not a secret, Marty's a yeller.
>> Yeah. Marty yells, and you can hear him from the complex [laughter] away.
Um I was a kid that because I was so quiet and I was so in my head, I was honestly harder than on myself than Marty could ever be. So, I always listen to the message.
There's a story which my mom and Marty will remember. We were in I believe it was Vegas. We were in a tournament. I made this play. It was kind of it was to my right. Marty's uh mindset on backhands in softball is that anything to your right you're going to backhand.
Cuz we want to get the angle, get your right foot around. Backhand it, throw it across. I did not backhand. I moved over, threw it, she was out. And Marty comes out of the dugout. You know what we do on those balls? We backhand them.
And in my mind I'm like, "Shoot, yeah, we do." And I see our dugout's first base dugout, so I'm at shortstop. I see my mom in the stands on the first base side stand up, walk over the end, sit down at the end of the bleachers.
I'm like, "Thank god."
She And then he keeps going. He's continuing to yell at me.
That I And I don't even I'm not even hearing what he's saying. You know, he's continuing to yell at me. And a lot of the times Marty is kind of saying stuff so other people hear it, not even so I hear it, right? Like, we backhand because of this. And he's like, "It's a teaching moment." So, I'm like, "Okay, whatever.
I like I got the message. I'm good." My mom stands up again, and she goes down the bleachers. I'm like, "This is the worst."
>> [laughter] >> This is This is actually the worst case scenario right now.
And she come like she stands right by the dugout, not saying anything.
And so, crisis averted. She does not say anything to Marty, but after the game she comes up to me. She goes, "I think we need to leave this team." And I say, "Mom, we're not leaving this team."
