one of our radio personalities here at the Spear Lake Dakota Nation does an excellent job and I believe he's been helping out in the communities during our events doing helping us in our health promotion.
>> Check.
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
I wanted to uh share a little history about traditional dancing.
You know for since the early '7s we used to travel here for Fort Totten days and in those days the POW committee they had they paid 10 places out in all of the categories and they put up $1,500 before anybody else did in this area.
And there was no casinos back then.
And the Powow Committee raised money all year long to put on that celebration.
And they fed us rations when we at our camps.
And a lot of dancers that I danced with back that time are all gone now.
Now I'm dancing with their sons and grandsons.
That victory dance song that was sung at the Veterans Day pow in Cisetin, South Dakota some years ago.
They sang those started to sing those victory dance songs.
I looked around and nobody knew how to dance to them.
So, I started dancing the way you're supposed to to each one of those songs.
When I got done, people were laughing at me. They made fun of me for dancing the way I was.
One of the original porcupine singers, Philip Wright, was there and uh he was up on the announcer stand with his cane and he talked.
He said uh I watched all you dancers make fun of uh Terry. He said, "Well, he danced those songs."
He said, "But that's the first time in 30ome years that I seen those dances done the way they're supposed to be done."
Instead of making fun of him, you guys should be learning, learning something.
And especially you know our young people that are watching around the arena our way of life or they call this way of dancing back in the old days lot style dancing that's what they say and they taught us a lot of things old dancers about traditional dancing now I watch on Facebook and I see all the things that you're not supposed to do as a traditional dancer.
Those are the guys that are winning today.
So, our tradition is slipping away from us little by little.
Last weekend and I went to Madison, Wisconsin for one day pow.
Our final song was a change up song.
And this group, I'm not going to say their name, but they sang a song for us, and it was a men's fancy dance trick song, and it was made by Redders singers and recorded back in the 70s.
But these young singers didn't know, so they just decided to sing that kind of song for us.
But each one of these dances, there are songs that go with them.
the way it's supposed to be done today. You don't hear those songs.
Everybody wants to make new songs and they forget about the old ways.
It's good to make something new, but don't let go of the past.
I just wanted to share a little bit and say thank you to listening to me here this afternoon.
Terry for sharing some history with us, some of our culture.
With that, we're going to move right on down to our next special for Jolie Kavanaaugh. Teen Girls Jingle Special. So, all you Teen Girls, stand by.
Teen Girls Jingle Special Visiting with the Family. They're not going to do an honor song this evening.
They're going to go right into contest.
So, dancers, stand by.
Also, the just wanted to there's a lost and found in the bathroom.
This is got some real long eyelashes in there and some foundation.
There's a phone in here, too. So, I had a Somebody dropped their bag. We'll leave it up here. You'll probably have to unlock the phone to take all this uh makeup with you. Oh, >> they'll join in for the last four.
>> Okay, let me stand out there.
Yes. All the youth are excused unless you're dancing in this jingle dress special. Let me let me me get out of the way over here.
All you Coahomony dancers, we're later on we're going into Coahomy special. So stand by.
I believe the family has already visited with Tokua [sighs] for the songs that they're requesting this evening.
Jolie Kavanaaugh has been representing the Spear Lake tribe as our traveling princess.
She's 16 years old. She's a sophomore here in Devil's Lake High School. She's the granddaughter of the late Robert Kavanaaugh senior, Blaine Anderson, Betty Smith, Tammy for the daughter of Reggie Kavanaaugh and Hannah Anderson.
Jolie has traveled to many paws with her family to represent the Spear Lake Dakota nation while being a traveling princess.
Some of the paws she's attended over this past year has been White Shield North Dakota, Bcourt, North Dakota, Shakapei, United Tribes, Bismar, Siston, Prairie Island, Mandere, and Grand Forks. She's also attended many community day powals where she has had specials to give back to the community.
She feels an it's been an honor to her and her family to be a traveling PR princess and representing Spirit Lake nation. Jolie and a family are looking forward to the summer paws where she'll have an opportunity to continue to represent our tribe.
We are thankful for this Dakota way of life and want to give thanks by giving back here today.
We want to thank the family for supporting her throughout these travels and for being with her and helping to not only support her in the travels but to represent our nation as well.
We want to welcome all teen girls jingle dress dancers ages 13 to 17 to come on out. Form a circle around our arena here. Ages 13 to 17. Girls, come on out and form a circle.

And on that second push-up, we want all of you to join in and dance with her. And these aunties out here are going to be the judges, and they're going to pick from the group here.
And Auntie Patricia said she's looking for a partner for the Komy special.

Hey, look. He's smiling, too. He must be know what we're talking about.
Got to hear some good stories. Uh travels as the these Indian guys, you know, these Dakota guys from Spirit Lake, they made a trip out east and here the more they tell me about their trip, it sounds like it could be one of those um National Lampoons movies and everything under the sun could happen.
They almost died. They're mid prayer.
Almost got hit by a semi.
Got dumped off in a rugged neighborhood, Chicago.
Got mistaken for a Chinese man.
All right, boys. We'll see you tomorrow.
That at this time, I believe we're going to be handing it on over here to Londell Seabo. Going to speak in on behalf of the family here. Stick around. Get up in the gahome contest.
Check.
want to say uh good evening to all of you.
At this time, our uh head judges, they've uh asked for some of your time.
We ask all of our uh contestants, if we have contestants, we'd like to uh ask you to lend an ear.
Like to ask the nephew and uh little brother Chaz and Lane, ask you to stand by.
You know, a few years back, this couple here, they got together and they started their family, traveled all over the continent, been doing a lot of uh helping out. As they've gotten older, they've they've tend to uh be asked to uh help out in different ways. But both of these uh both of the both of these two and their families on both sides, you know, Philick and St. John family, Anthony, but also over here, Makesrom makes family.
Over here, Tara's the uh daughter of the late uh Marty Makesrom from uh Spring Creek, Spring Creek, South Dakota on the Rosebud Reservation. So, this young lady, she's no stranger to uh music, but as a couple, they're very honored to be able to be asked by the veterans of uh Mini Waka Oate to be the uh head uh judges, dance judges for the men's and women's categories.
So this evening, if you would uh stand by, if you notice, there's some prizes. I believe there's going to be five places.
And I guess I believe we do have some judges.
>> You have any judges here?
>> These are the judges.
>> Okay. So these are the judges we need.
We need Okay. So Birdie, we need I imagine we need Cushi Kathy.
We need Roger >> Roger Irwin and Miss Lana Street.
These are our judges for this. Uh so you guys might want to go ahead and come up here. Hey, you want to uh bring me one of your microphones? Use guys are going to sing. And uh like I said, the nephews here, the nephew and the brother, they're going to be providing the music here this evening for for our contestants.
So, we're going to ask all of our uh all of our uh contestants.
I believe there's going to be five places.
There's going to be some prize money.
And again, I was asked uh the other day, they uh they gave me some tobacco.
They brought a big old bucket of chicken. I've been chewing on that uh eating that bucket of chicken here for about the last 24 hours now.
And they asked me if I would uh speak on behalf of their their little family and their relatives here. But uh this evening, they want to give back.
They want to give back to the circle and uh to be asked So, we're going to ask our uh couples once again. Each one of these you see up here, there's a there's a set.
>> Okay.
>> All right. There's going to be sets.
Each uh placing couple will uh receive a set, his and hers set.
So remember now I want to let you know that uh this is on uh pow.com.
So if you borrow somebody as a partner and you didn't bring your uh significant other we just want to make sure that uh nobody gets in trouble. Okay. This is go home once at one time go home dance and I was asked to explain this but at one time this is how we did our socials. we did social dancing. Today we're in modern times and I know a lot of the times that uh we do dance with our significant others whether it's our wife or companion but at one time these dances were made for social dancing and it would be you didn't dance with your significant other but of course as a couple they wanted to have gahony so they're going to do it this way so they're going to do it they're going to judge by the dancing.
This isn't rabbit dance, okay? It's not rabbit dance. All right? And I'm pretty sure that my nephews here, they know songs. Like I said, their grandpa and their dad was a very renowned Okawicha, Mr. Marty Mstrom.
So, I know Chaz for a fact, but I also know Lane that they grew up around the drum and they know singing.
And again, there's there's something that they're specifically looking for.
The judges will be specifically looking for that style of dance.
And again, there's a I want to make sure that uh we don't leave anybody out.
So I'm going to read right what's right off the paper. So this goes special sponsored by headman and headwoman judges and it says we wanted to do this go home special give back to the circle and to say thank you to the spirit lake VFW veterans for asking us to be a part of this year's minuipi celebration 2026 and there's going to be two songs once again by the nephew and and also the Brother, brother and lane. Chaz and Lane. They're going to pick five couples after two songs.
So, I want to wish all of you the best of luck.
So, we're going to get out here. Space yourselves out.
And I don't know if our happy couple is going to do a song.
>> All right. So, they're going to do they're going to do the first push-up.
All right. So, you're going to see how just in love they are.
>> Okay. So, they're going to do their go home dance. All right. One push-up and then from there we're going to ask all of our couples. So, I'm pretty sure they know what they do. They know what they're they're going to sing. So, once again, want to say good luck to each and every one of you couples. Thank you for being here this evening. And once again, I know this is going to be a treat. So, good luck to all of you. All right, take it away, singers. Here we go. Go time.
[screaming] Hey, hey, hey.
[singing] I want to see you.
Remember me. Before you go, I want to see you hookah.
[singing] Our judges are making their way out onto the floor.
Tough to be a judge. Tough to be a judge.
[music] Watch.
[screaming] [music] [music] Hey.
Hey.
>> [music and singing] >> Hey, I want to say you [music] remember you go home.
I want to see you.
>> [music] >> Hey, [music] hey, hey.
>> [music] >> Hey [music] y'all.
are [music] we are [music] we are hey [music] we are hey [music] are I want to see you.
[music] Hey boy, you go home.
I want to see you.
[music] >> [music] >> Once again there couples. We got one more song.
Move around a little bit. Think about what you want to do here. We got one more song.
One more song.
And then our judges will be picking, I believe, five couples.
And then those five couples will be dancing for I believe the placing.
Once again, want to say thank you to all our couples that uh stuck it out here with us this evening to get into this special.
Like I said, Anthony and Terra, really appreciate all of you coming and supporting the celebration and the veterans, the VFW veterans here on Spirit Lake.
So, in a little bit here, singers are getting their song together here.
So, this is the song you want to make the difference in right here.
Get in the top five.
All right, here we go. Song number two.
Good luck, dancers.
Hey, hey, hey.
[music] walking. So my [music] >> [music and singing] >> Hey, hey, [music] hey. [singing] [music] >> [music] >> for [music] God.
Hallelujah.
[music] Hey, [music] [singing] hey, hey. [music] >> [music and singing] >> Hey, [music] hey, hey.
Hey, [music] [music] [screaming] shall I walk through my Hey >> [singing] [music] [music] >> All right, dancers. Just stay right where you are. We're going to be picking five couples.
So, judges are going to pick five.
They'll figure out which five how they want to do this.
There'll be five five couples being picked here selected. Those five couples will be going on to the finals.
All right. Looks like there's one that got one couple selected there already.
All right, here we go.
Couple more selections being made.
Okay, another couple. Two. There's three.
We still have two more.
All right. Looks like couple number four and couple number five.
All right, we want to say thank you to the rest of all of you for coming out this evening, helping out our head judges.
I said tough to be a judge.
So again, the headman, head woman and their relatives here want to say thank you. This is their way of saying thank you to the committee and to the veterans and giving something back.
I said the couple here they travel and take their family. They go they take their family with them everywhere they go. Always traveling to Pawa circuit.
Always going and taking part in all the celebrations.
Drive back all night. Make it back to work Monday morning.
No matter how far away they go.
All right. Want to say thank you for the sportsmanship to all the rest of the couples.
Thank you for coming out supporting the family.
All right, we're going to ask the rest of our five couples if you will get out there someplace.
Get yourself station yourself out. Once again, we're going to be picking picking our couples. We'll be going fifth place down to first place.
I believe this next song is going to be five push-ups. Within those four four push-ups, we'll be selecting the winners. The last one out there will be our champion couple, our winners.
And on that fifth push-up, our sponsors, Anthony and Terara, are going to dance that last push-up with our winners.
So once again, I don't know how they're going to do uh the selection, if it's first through fifth or I don't know if it's by choice or how that's going to go with the uh sets over there did some really beautiful work. Whoever the it is right there, raise your hand right here. This is the seamstress right there.
>> Oh, Regina. All right.
So, if you need some work done, there you go. Looks like you're going to be doing more of a homey special.
There you go.
So, really nice work there, Gina.
Regina.
So once again, the judges are over there huddled up. They're going to figure out maybe they're going to do leg wrestling.
Figure it out here. I don't know how how who's going to pick how they're going to pick fourth on down. They'll figure all that out.
>> So Five push-ups.
Five push-ups is going to be this next song. This ch championship song. Last one out there will be our winner. And I do believe it's 500, 400, 300, 200, and 100.
So that's a nice little some coffee money and maybe a little gas money help you out.
All right. So, tomorrow these these uh top five are probably going to be you see them walking around here, they'll probably be limping a little bit. So, you know how hard they danced here. The homonyy special.
So, as soon as I get the nod from the judges, judges, you all set? Singers, you all set? Dancers, are you all set?
All right, let's get on out on the floor.
Good luck to all of you. This next song, like last championship song, will be five push-ups.
So once again, we'll leave it up to Chaz and Lane song.
Good luck couples.
>> [crying] >> Hallelujah.
God [singing] [singing] [music] high. [singing] >> [music] [singing] [music] [singing] [music and singing] >> All right, this will be for fifth place.
Our fifth place couple.
All right, our fifth place couple.
>> Congratulations.
>> And our fourth place couple.
All right, here's our fourth place couple right here.
>> Congratulations.
Come on up this way.
>> [singing] [music] [singing] >> Third place couple.
>> All right, this is our for third place right here.
>> [singing] [music] >> and second place. [music] >> Second place couple right here.
And our champions are out on the floor.
How about a round of applause for all of our couples >> and our guests of honor right here, Anthony and Terra.
[music] Hey, hey, hey.
[music] [singing] [music] [singing] >> [music] [music and singing] >> How about a round of applause for all our couples?
>> [music] [singing] [music] >> All right, how about a round of applause for all of our couples?
I'm going to go right down the line here. I'mma let the fifth place and the fourth place.
>> All right. So, this was fifth place right there.
All right. Fifth place.
White Spirit Lake.
All right, that was your fifth place winners. And we have our fourth place winners right here.
>> Oh, Dwayne and Allison Curley from Shine River.
>> All right, how about a round of applause for the Curly family.
And our third place winners, Kyle and Leo Frasier from Cheyenne River.
>> All right, the Frasier couple, Cheyenne River, Mariah and Arrow from Cicin, South Dakota.
>> All right, how about a round of applause for Mariah and Arrow, second place, and our champions, >> Marcus and Caitlyn White from Sting Rock. All right. Congratulations to all our couples.
Once again, I probably need to want to take some pictures.
Want to say thank you to all our judges.
I believe there's a few things there.
They got a few things they want to help out here and say thank you once again.
All right. First of all, listen up. Once again, congratulations to all our couples.
First of all, we'd like to give a thank you and we'd like to call up our VFW veterans. if you would. VFW veterans, we have a quilt here for your organization once again for uh asking uh the uh nephew and the niece here to uh be your head judges for your celebration this year. They say thank you. Thank you for this honor.
And then we have All right. The family wants to encourage and to give uh give special recognition to Miss Harriet Lester.
If Harriet Lester, if you're here, family has a a really beautiful uh skirt, a pink skirt.
And I believe uh you are going through a few things and uh in your lifetime, and they want to uh encourage you, say thank you for being here, but they want to give you this skirt.
and to encourage you. They got a medallion, some earrings, something that you can pawn, say thank you to you for for being here and to help helping out.
All right. At this time, we'd like to call up Mr. Doctor Dr. McDonald Tahashi, if you would come up here. They have a gift for you that they want to uh give you here. They got a blanket snagging blanket.
That's for That's for you also.
Mr. Charles Walker.
Mr. Charles Walker, if you are still in the house. Oh, did he already take off?
He's already snagged.
>> Snagged and took off already. So, All right. So, thank you to Charles Walker. Also, our arena director, Mr. Chesqueke Lelanc, once again for helping out and acknowledging the family, fitting them in this time.
So, Mr. Ches, thank you. They got a blanket for you.
Also, Grandma Imagene.
Grandma Imagene, if you would make your way this way. Grandma Imagene, I believe, was one one of the one of the judges also. So, they want to give her this also.
Okay, the seamstress Regina for everything that you helped out with.
You made some really beautiful. They got a star quilt for you. really want to say thank you.
>> I bet you she did these all last minute.
Really fast. Probably does a lot of really good work. It's really good work.
Talented.
>> All right.
Ray Running Bear, if you're still in the house, you advertise this special on the radio on Kaboo.
all this past week.
So, Mr. Ray Running Bear, if you're still in the house, where's that fedora? Should see that fedora.
Did he go? Is he running around outside?
Maybe somebody can pick this up. But it's a I see he must be a Denver Bronco fan. Maybe, maybe not.
>> Honey. All right.
>> Thank you.
>> All right. There you go. So that's Don't tell them.
>> All right. So here they're giving me this too. All right. Thank you.
>> All right.
>> All right. Last but not least, the little brother and the nephew here, Chaz and Lane. They came all the way from Rosebud.
all the way from Rosebud to sing these songs for for their uncle and their auntie and their brother and sister here.
Once again, I think they took care of all the judges we're taking care of.
Once again, we want to say thank you for this time for all our couples and they want to wish you happy rest of the celebration and safe travels home and everything for being here. So, boss.
>> Oh, all right. Let's give the family a round of applause. And thank you to Anthony and Tara. Excellent. Special.
