Scene one. Jalagara is a powerful symbolic play that challenges rigid caste structures and institutionalized religion. Jalagara is a scavenger from the lower of society. He depicted as a common but wise man because of his caste. Jalagara is forbidden from entering the village temple. He finds a superior from of spiritual through his daily labor rather than formal ritual.
Jalagara's core philosophy is that work is worship, finding God in his broom and the street he cleans. The story suggests God is everywhere in the sun, wind, and trees rather than just in stone buildings. Here, present character represent traditional faith believing God only lives inside the temple.
The Jalagara argues that the Shiva inside the temple belongs only the present while the living God is found in the soil. The play uses a series of meetings to expose the hypocrisy of those who considered themselves superior to Brahman are initially moved by Jalagara's beautiful singing assuming it must come from a great soul. Upon realizing the singer is a scavenger, their admiration turns to immediate disgust.
