[00:00:00]Deep in the darkest part of the ocean, where no sunlight ever reaches, [music] lives a creature so mysterious that scientists gave it a name straight out of a horror movie. Meet the vampire squid, and trust me, it's even stranger than the name suggests.

[00:00:14]The vampire squid has been around for over 300 million years, making it older than most creatures on this planet. It's not actually a squid or an [music] octopus. It belongs to its own completely separate category called Vampyroteuthis infernalis, which literally translates to vampire squid from hell.

[00:00:30]It lives 3,000 ft below the ocean surface in what scientists [music] call the oxygen minimum zone, a place so dark and so low in oxygen [music] that almost nothing else can survive there. But the vampire squid thrives in it.

[00:00:42]Here's where it gets [music] bizarre.

[00:00:44]When threatened, it doesn't release ink like a regular squid. Instead, it shoots out a cloud of glowing blue bioluminescent mucus to confuse [music] predators. It then wraps its cloak-like webbed arms completely around its body and disappears into the darkness.
