Trial of ‘Cat’ Matlala and 4 co-accused continues at Joburg High Court

As Adam leaves the the studio, we still have a lot to talk about in terms of court cases and trials, but you know, the light and shade, we need some levity and some entertainment and sport always brings that for us. But let's have a look firstly at the Katlego trial underway. Yesterday we had the first witness giving evidence against Katlego and his four co-accused at the Joburg High Court. That witness speaking about an attempted hit that he was in not involved in, but was was a victim of essentially in cross-examination now underway. Dimakatsu Leshoro, EWN reporter on that story for us.

[00:00:39]Dimakatsu, good afternoon to you. Take us through the evidence today.

[00:00:44]>> Hi Melly. So at the start of today, we heard counsel. Remember the witness who took the stand yesterday is under cross-examination today. So it was the counsel for the second accused.

[00:01:02]Counsel advocate rather Ntabazuko Dlamini. So he wanted to introduce a picture of the alleged crime scene where the incident, the shooting, took place where an attempt allegedly an attempt on Joe Sibanyoni's life took place at the Centurion Golf Estate. So when he tried to do that, he told the court that he went this morning at 6:00 and took the picture himself. And the state objected to him introducing the pictures because pointed out that yesterday when they tried to introduce video [clears throat] evidence of the actual scene in the shooting, that was objected to by all advocates defense counsel saying that that video had not been authenticated. So advocate Leroux who represents the state said that the pictures also have not been authenticated and therefore cannot be shown to the witness. So, um the court had to adjourn for a bit uh to allow uh you know, Mr. Khumalo here to print the pictures, to provide them to counsel, but when we came back, um it was ruled that uh you know, those would not go through. So, those pictures are blocked. But now that has brought us in in a situation where where I just left court um where Mr. Khumalo here is leading the witness or ex-cross-examining the witness about the um the crime scene because there seems to be a dispute about the actual crime scene where the incident took place because from what we heard yesterday, if you recall, that the BMW that shot at the Golf 7 and the Ferrari and uh the security that was at the gate um had come through there, uh went past the entrance a bit, made a U-turn, and came back to the entrance, and it was behind them at the parking base uh behind the the Golf 7 where it the shooting took place. So, now um just as I exited court, it seems like um you know, the the this the accused the defense for the accused uh for accused two are disputing uh the crime scene where the incident took place. So, bearing in mind that at this point, we actually don't know what the crime scene looks like because that video that the state wanted to introduce yesterday was blocked. So, uh Advocate uh Khumalo here has said that if he can't introduce the pictures, then you know, they might bring an application for uh investigation in loco, meaning to go there and and go examine the crime scene. But now uh the state is objecting to the line of questioning because uh the advocate is asking the witness to draw uh to show where the which direction the car came, where the parking bays are, so we get we get a sense of what the crime scene looks like. So, I'm not sure what the the ruling of the judge would be in terms of how to move forward from this issue.
