Seventeen June 1988 *feat. tweenaged Milla Jovovich*Added:
Hello people, it's Cole. Today we'll be flipping through 17. This issue is from June 1988.
All right. So, on the cover is Milla Jovovich. It's labeled right here.
Kind of interesting that she's got her name down there because you never see that on the cover of a magazine like this unless it's like a movie star type of a celebrity. Milla Jovovich was not a movie star at this time because she was 12.
She's 12 years old on the cover of 17 and she looks 12. She looks like she's ordering off the kids menu still. In big hoop earrings and some play makeup.
Beyond that, it's a very fun summery color scheme. Milla's wrapped in this kind of interesting textile wrap, I guess. I don't know what that is. We'll find out. All right, let's get started.
Make your hair glimmer, shimmer, or simply glow. Several different box hair dyes or kind of hair whatever highlight kits here. There's hair painting.
There's Summer Blonde. Check out that box. Very fun, very '80s.
It's Debbie Gibson. There's some bright, very bright hot pink natural wonder lipstick and nail polish here. We have a few quotes from from Debbie herself. Debbie says, "Some days I like blue jeans and a T-shirt. Other days I like a mini skirt, leggings, bunchy socks, and a hat." And I know she likes a hat. And she's putting on that hot pink nail polish. [music] So cute, windswept.
Woah.
>> [laughter] >> These L'Oreal Studio Line hair products, we see a lot of ads for these in a lot of magazines and cuz it's spanned for many many years and across decades. So, this is a wonderful big mega hair >> [laughter] >> 80s version. Amazing.
More hot pink. We're going to see so much hot pink. I'm so excited. Cover Girl right here. Carol Alt in a hot pink big ball earring and a vinyl looking rain coat. Slick them up. She's got a squirt gun for summer.
Over here is a um an ad for Jelly Belly.
Some of these flavors are no longer [music] produced. Retired flavors, all right. We have a blackberry brandy, RIP, boysenberry, cantaloupe, [music] chocolate mint, ice blue mint.
The bright pink with the vibrant sapphire blue is such a killer combination. Renee Simonsen for Cover Girl soft radiance lipsticks. They're like more sheer more light, I think. For summer makes sense. Also makes sense for like a teen audience.
Woah.
God. The Cutting Garden designer imposter body sprays.
We have a a fresh garden of blooming products here. Kind of [music] um illustrated manuscript style art on the bottles here and they all have these huge clunky plastic flower tops. We have lilies and roses.
Get on the banana boat. Okay, don't mind if I do. It's Greg Louganis >> [laughter] >> in this so cute little Speedo swimsuit.
Flame Glow.
Love this bright white background with the black silhouettes.
She was cool. Her eyes were cool. Her disposition was cool.
And when she went out, it was only on cool nights to drink cool drinks and make cool glances at cool men. Very cool. Here's a look at these flame glow uh pencils. They're like eyeliners or eyeshadows and eyeliners, probably. They have this really fun printed packaging on them and they are all blue. Cool, as you know.
Blue and purple.
I'm loving the big, big, beautiful beauty shots here.
My nail color's got twice the punch with Maxie.
Maxie one coat. Some fun pinks. Doing an accent nail. Our model's got an accent nail. Her pinky is pink. And she's got these wonderful, very, very geometric, very like sculptural rings on in gold that have red and blue stones in them.
Lady Stetson over here. An exciting blend of contrasts, like America itself.
Deodorant. Secret wide solid. It's extra wide for a broad-shouldered gal like you.
Bonnie Bell watercolors. Makeup to go swimming in.
Introducing makeup that doesn't run while you swim. So good. Okay, so we have blue eyeliner on here with, I think, blue mascara.
That bright hot pink lip. And uh here's our whole little makeup display, like the store display, which is shaped like a sailboat. So cute. On this side, we're advertising colored contacts for first-time contact.
Interesting angle.
We're going to see some really wonderful illustrations. And here's one for Sea Breeze antiseptic for the skin. The mismatched like kooky text, the polka dot background. This is a totally like mall madness feeling situation with the cord phone [music] and there's your your bestie on the phone chatting you up.
Getting started with the the Sun In and Sun In adjacent products. Sprays for your hair to blonde them up in the sun.
Those sunglasses are wild.
A mime?
>> [laughter] >> What?
>> [clears throat] >> Watch out. Everyone's watching.
It's a mime-themed [music] wristwatch.
Band is so lay. In Saint-Tropez, women have no fear of exposure because they're wearing this SPF. She is topless. It's European, you know.
Oh, and there she is again. Still topless.
And on this side, Jerry Redding.
Kooky spiky messy hair uh with some evening gloves, why not, and a little gingham sweetheart dress.
We're doing some fun photo booth goofing around with the girls.
You can see we have like a kind of a recolorized black and white thing down here with some colorful eye shadow on these little black and white faces.
Sun In, what I say?
More Sun In.
This is a couple of different formulas for different results. All of the results are [music] the the yellow. You do get a yellow head of hair, cartoon yellow, gentle super and natural lemon.
Another fabulous illustration. Whoa, Stridex big pads. How you handle pimples on your back in January may not work in June. Oh, he's got a turtleneck on at the beach, sweating up a storm. This is a beautiful beautiful airbrushed illustration. Whoa.
Sheer color sensation, Clairol Pazazz. This is a color wash, so it kind of sort of gives your hair a tint without being like a full dye, and the colors are all pinks and purples, which is pretty shocking.
Maybe that would be good on like a dark hair, you know, like a Sailor Moon.
How they have their hair has like a purple shine to it, or like a green shine or whatever.
Okay, we have some some some shopping, the very best in accessories for you for summer '88. We have beaded necklaces with little straw baskets on them.
Some acid colored little t-shirt dresses and a bright yellow portable boom box for the beach. Palm tree umbrella, this is so fun.
I don't know if you've noticed there's been so many hair removal ads and like articles and stuff. Um, here's another one. It's a glide-on Nair. It's kind of like a deodorant stick style.
So, this is a a high-concept ad from Finesse. It's like it's a little story about girls that work at a diner.
>> [laughter] >> Totally classic cartoon costume diner outfits with little white aprons and dresses, [music] pink diner dresses for waitresses and they were holding little receipts and coffee coffee pots and things. And then look at this.
It's like a step-by-step little photos, like a photo album of getting ready with all of these Finesse products. Get your hair nice and uh greasy for the diner where it will get even greasier.
And then they're doing this like dress-up thing. I don't know why.
They're doing some kind of prom moment at the diner, too. Some handsome tuxedo boys.
This is cute. I don't know. This feels very like aspirational, like, oh, a summer job, you know? Like you're a teenager, maybe that'd be like so exciting for you.
I remember getting my first job as a teenager, scooping ice cream.
>> [laughter] >> Wasn't like this, though.
Some Caress soap over here in more summery, bright, vibrant colors. This is like a kind of a carved or molded plastic bangle bracelet with flowers all over it. It's kind of cute. And there is an interview with Charlie Schlatter over here. Look at that wonderful red loud red sweater.
Ooh, Del Monte fruit snacks. It's actually um dried fruit.
We have cherry and raisins, which is raisins that are covered with like a cherry yogurt type whatever candy coating, I guess, and yogurt-covered crunchy apple bits. That sounds so good. I'm very interested in this cherry raisin thing in particular.
Fun dark denim moment with the girls riding around on a little Vespa scooter thing.
Ooh.
Look at these polka dot pumps.
More beach fun, Tanana.
So, it's a banana-shaped bottle of sunscreen.
This guy is wearing like a very teeny little bikini-style swimsuit. Oh boy.
On this side, uh Babe, the fragrance.
It's a modeling contest. Yes.
Enter the great Babe girl search. Be a Babe model. Here's some samples of other Babe models. Do you look like that? You better.
So, we have we have we've had a couple of kind of anti-pad propaganda ads. This one, I hate pads.
[music] They're like wearing diapers.
These three sad girls in blue walking off into the forest because they won't wear pads. It's a Tampax tampon ad. And then this one, couple pages back, I felt funny about using a tampon.
Playtex. More >> [music] >> pad problems.
Oh my god.
>> [laughter] >> Crystal Gayle, Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue? It's a Personal Touch razor.
And she's the one who was wearing the polka dot pumps.
Look at that hair. She is nuts.
We're doing some hair concepts.
High-concept hair concepts. Wrap your ponytail in ribbon, why don't you?
Sea and Ski.
Suntan lotion. I don't really understand what suntan lotion is. It has an SPF in it, but then it's also supposed to make you get tanner, too. Like it's like a tanning oil. It's like trying to be both things. More hot pink, screaming hot pink one-piece swimsuit on some Adirondack chairs with your tan boyfriend.
Victoria Principal.
For Germack.
Sure, hair is red.
Usually it's a very massive heavy brown kind of lump and I've seen so many Victoria Principal Germaine ads. Dressed in a a rather interesting oversized [music] um red like brocade huge shirt I think with rolled up sleeves and a color matched bold earring.
Sweatsuits in a rainbow of lovely tasty pastels.
Big 80s trends here. We have paper bag waists. We have a kind of a off the shoulder kind of wide cut sweatshirt.
Oversized everything. Leggings and the the belts too. They got everything going on and there's even a boy and he looks so cute.
Okay, we're moving into our kind of like 17 editorials. All right, our June features. We're getting hot in the sun.
June struck. Love that.
>> [laughter] >> Fun beach shot. White umbrella with a white one piece swimsuit and a jaunty yellow straw hat parked in a >> [laughter] >> zebra floaty.
I love the 80s for their commitment to hats.
More straw hats right here and a wide brim kind of bucket hat over here.
We are getting hot with sunscreen. This I think is a crocheted crocheted swimsuit perhaps in white.
Scarves to do creative twists and turbans and twirls. Do some Bo Derek braids down here.
This is fun.
Kind of wrap your bun in a scarf and just keep it sucked in there.
Desert Bloom. We're doing a desert theme now and it's Mila. Miss Mila, for those who like a little passion with their fashion, the latest in salsa inspired looks. Oh, okay.
Okay, I had to like I'm like in my head turning through like why is it desert but then it's Spanish Spanish like Spain is not a desert. What are they talking about? I guess it's sort of the inspiration is a blend of things kind of lazy. Blend of things so we're blending together Spanish, south of the border and even Indian influences. That's what it says.
So, yeah, that's what that meant. Now we now we understand. It's a bit of a blur.
Puffy peasant blouses. This one's polka dots. Got to have that hot pink. A big wide sash belt.
And on this side we're piling on the jewelry. Silver and colorful beads. Kind of cute to see a freckly model. They didn't try to erase those freckles.
We're embracing them. That's very summer sunny.
Provence.
A little Provence themed editorial here.
Lots of prints, little kind of ditsy floral print here on this set.
And a plaid. I think it's another set.
Little plaid item here.
Paisley on this side with this little cropped sweater. Of course you have to have the straw hat. Of course you have to have the bundle of flowers in your bike basket.
>> [laughter] >> Oh my god.
Speaking of straw hats, this is so funny. The tiniest hat.
Scooping your bun.
We're doing a little sketching in the the meadows of Provence with a sundress on. What a dream.
More watches.
Digits. Oh, these are finger watches. Wait, what?
Oh, digits. I get it. Like your fingers.
Okay.
Never in my life have I heard of this before. What an interesting sh- seemingly short-lived trend.
Over here, we we are getting finals phobia for the end of the school year, of course. So, it's called food for thought cuz we're talking about getting like a balanced diet to help you think clearly at school. She looks so much like Michelle Pfeiffer, doesn't she?
All right, here we go. Here's your Here's your snacks and your lunch and your little breakfast.
Get your brain on straight. We're big on raisins. Okay. We're mo- raisins have come round again as a thing to eat in the '80s. For breakfast, we are having a split whole wheat English muffin with uh ricotta cheese on it, not cream cheese.
Probably ricotta has more protein.
>> [music] >> Top with raisins, walnuts, and honey.
I just saw an A1 ad in this magazine I looked through last week, which was um Country Living from 1986.
We're still doing A1 stuff, and it still looks like the most frighteningly >> [laughter] >> saturated freaky food photography.
Love lasts forever. I'm sure your teenage boyfriend and you were probably still together. So, here we have like a little his and hers like heart key necklace thing.
Romantic.
Okay, we're getting towards the end. So, we're moving into the black and white little ads for weird junk. Miss American Petite. Okay.
We always see this in uh teen magazines, like modeling schools, modeling contests, Look of the Year, win $1 million. [music] There's an international model model search going on from Elite Model Management and John Casablancas.
There's an ad here for uh fashion merchandising program and there's little quotes from different uh students of this program and I'm surprised to see several many boys here that have attended this program, okay?
Maybe they knew that uh some boys might read Seventeen magazine and might want to study fashion in college.
There's a lot of uh kind of secondary education things in here like not a traditional college track.
This is one for Boyd School Travel and Business Careers. It would train you to work for airlines, cruise lines, travel agents, hotels, and corporate travel departments. It's kind of fun. We have our little travel girly here. I think she's a flight attendant or something.
And there's another one right here. The Southeastern look.
This crazy like mirror ad. Let the real you shine through.
Okay. Oh.
Finally, on the last page, we got our little Milla Jovovich feature. And by the way, I'm sure you noticed, there was only two pictures of her. The cover image, which is this one again, and that other picture of her with her head turned a little bit. So, what? Lame.
Milla was born in Kiev, USSR. She and her family left the Soviet Union 7 years ago and now lives in Los Angeles, age 12.
Yep.
>> [laughter] >> So, Milla says she wanted to be an actress, but when Prima Model Management saw my pictures 8 months ago, they signed me up. Since then I've been to New York, Paris, Nepal. It's great.
Funny to hear her talk about like I wanted to be an actress, but like she had to give up on that dream at age 12.
It's and that's not going to happen. But then it did happen.
Can you imagine turning turning out to be the thing you always wanted to be even when you were 12 [music] and then that actually does become your career?
Can't relate. Last page.
It is an ad for Hawaiian Blend Tropical Blend Tanning Oil, okay? It looks like oil, like literally looks like jars of brown cooking oil. And uh there's you down here greased up shiny and dark like a rotisserie chicken with that French braid. It's a fully backless swimsuit.
Looks to be like a one-piece, I think, in a yellow and purple colorway. It's very very tropical fun. We're looking out at the beach having a vision of these products as we stare into the sun.
Okay.
On the back.
Vitale's has sun. We're lifting weights cuz they're they improve your body in 2 minutes flat, your hair body, but we're have these two brown colored bottles on this hand weight. Love this particular brown color right here. This kind of like I don't know what you'd call that, mink color? I just I think that's it's very era-specific. I like that. Our weightlifter is kind of in a pretty heavy shadow silhouette here, but she does have a VS like Vitale's has sun earring.
Well, there you have it. 17 from June 1988.
If you have any magazines or catalogs you think I might be interested in, my PO box is listed in the description of every video including this one and I will see you all next week with another new video. So, until then take care.
