Black Women Were Banned From White Suffrage Groups

While white women marched for the vote, black women were told to march in the back or not march at all. Organizations like the National American Women's Suffrage Association literally excluded black women from their meetings. They threw them under the bus to keep southern white women happy. So, black women had to build their own movement, their own organizations, fight twice as hard for the same rights. Women like Ida B. Wells Barnett who founded the Alpha Suffrage Club in Chicago. Mary Church Terrell who led the National Association of Colored Women. They were fighting gender discrimination and racial discrimination while white suffragists pretended they didn't exist. When the 19th Amendment passed in 1920, white women celebrated their victory. But black women in the South still couldn't vote because of Jim Crow laws. The suffrage movement succeeded partly by sacrificing black women's rights. And somehow this betrayal got erased from feminist history.
