eBay Making More Money While Sellers Make Less

[00:00:00]Hello everybody. Welcome back to Commonwealth Flipper. We're going to do a video today. We're going to do our normal what solds. It's an okay day, I guess. Not amazing, but I have some cool items that I want to show you, but we're going to I am going to call for eBay to throw its sellers a bone right here.

[00:00:16]This is not going to be a slam eBay video. I typically will call out eBay when I think they're doing something that, you know, I wouldn't do it that way. But I also give them quite a bit of praise when they're doing things that I think are going to benefit not just them but have a little bit of benefit for us as well. So I love to look at those things and I've been pouring over these numbers and I'm like, man, this has been turned around pretty significantly.

[00:00:39]However, our margins are getting slightly smaller where their margins are getting slightly bigger. To me, I see opportunity right here, not just for eBay, but for us. And I'm going to make a couple comments. I hope not to make anybody mad here, but I really think looking at these numbers, there is opportunity for massive growth, not just for eBay, but for us as well. We're going to talk about that, and I'm going to show you what's sold. Let's take a look. Every time I do a video like this, I get comments both ends of the spectrums. One is, you know, I'm not going to watch a video where people slam eBay is how I make my money and whatever. And then I'll get the other side, which you're just some psy for eBay doing their wishes, and you're probably on their payroll. Neither are even close to the truth to be perfectly honest with you. I try to call balls and strikes the way I see them and then allow other people to see them differently and allow myself to be wrong cuz I don't know everything about everything. This a Laaloopsy doll, y'all. This is awesome because this is the last sale of the Laaloopsy went to Paul. I recognize your name. This is a viewer sale actually and I sold a couple of these to viewers but not all of them.

[00:01:46]We had a bunch little $10 buy at a garage sale. They have all gone. At this point, I've made about $170. This one didn't go for a ton. What would it go for? $14.95 plus shipping. And at the end of this, after we pour through some numbers and talk about a few different things, I want you to put your perspective in this. Tell me where I'm right. Tell me where I'm wrong. And I don't know, eBay might listen to this. I don't think they listen to me by any stretch of the imagination. But just collectively, you know, you have to hear the voice. When you run an operation like eBay to some degree you have to hear the voice of your sellers if that's impacting your bottom line thus far it has not you've seen both GMV growth like for instance when the the attribution system attribution system came out I was vehemently opposed to the lang well I didn't like the idea at all but I was really upset with the language that they were using. I thought it was dishonest to be perfectly honest with you. I still do. It wouldn't take much to change the verbiage in there just to make it at least legitimate and transparent. But that's neither here nor there at this point because you and I said this when we talked about it. I said I don't think this is going to change. That doesn't mean we can't speak out against it. And I think largely not largely in a big way that has led to some of their revenue growth, the change in the stock price and the overall look of great success for eBay itself. That doesn't mean our margins are getting better. However, so for the record before I start talking about this, there are Well, just to lay it all out there, I don't receive any money from eBay. People that say that are just ridiculous. And I if I did, I would tell you I have received a dinner, however. Nice little dinner. Sat down with a bunch of wonderful folks. And they weren't all eBay folks, but there was some eBay folks there that was paid for. I have had a conversation with a pretty high up over in eBay and that's what led to that little meeting that was awesome. And I was given a couple of $15 eBay gift cards at an event handed out by some eBay employees that I promptly gave away to viewers on this channel. So if you're thinking that it's ridiculous and I have also been fairly heavily critical of a few different issues over eBay over the time. But the reality is I love eBay because I make a bunch of money on eBay. But I look at it. I I'm careful to look at the numbers. I got to dig for a hat. eBay occasionally does things that I can't stand, that I don't like. I wish they would fix, but I'm not eBay. It's their business. They also do things that I absolutely love, which is provide an opportunity for me to sell my stuff. And it goes pretty darn good. I thought I would do better on this hat, but I was a little lazy. I didn't clean that right there. And it's been used.

[00:04:23]So, I'm pretty happy to turn a dollar hat into $1.21 plus shipping. I'm not going to sit here and rehash the whole attribution system thing and the the rising prices of promoted listings because of it, but I am going to mention it really quick just to say two things. One is it doesn't affect me. I don't promote my listings.

[00:04:45]It is affecting other people. It's affecting a lot of folks out there like you. You know, I have this built-in advantage because I have built this channel and other channels where, you know, my sellrough rate is a little higher because like this one, this was a viewer sale for instance right here. got 20 things headed out of here. One viewer sale on a normal item and then we've sold a few of the inam man and stuff like that. We also did a charity thing which I'll tell you about in a minute.

[00:05:07]But it doesn't really affect me. The money that I'm making on eBay is more than I've ever made before. My profits in 2025 were the biggest profits I've ever had. The second thing, however, which is why I mentioned the attribution thing that went through last year, and then we'll bring up something else that I really talked about that a lot of people just ignored and I thought it was really significant. I'll bring that up as well, is when we look at these numbers here and the growth of eBay revenue going to eBay, the take rate for instance, it's going up. They're making a bunch of money. They have done a good job. If you're looking at it from the shareholders perspective, they've done an outstanding job considering where they were the years after CO, you know, they should be given some props here.

[00:05:51]Let's face it. However, there are some numbers here that are concerning to me as a seller because in essence, this is a giant partnership between a company that provides a platform, very good platform, and a ton of sellers who are trying to make money on that platform and in doing so making money for eBay.

[00:06:10]And it is those numbers. It's the attribution system among other things that are increasing their revenue. And I think there is a place, I don't know where it is exactly, but if I were in their shoes, which I'm not, I would do something right here to solidify a little bit better relationship between eBay and its sellers. I've been advocating this for years. They have done some things and I will mention them that I think are really good. And they're not necessarily on the fee side.

[00:06:37]There are other things that I think they have that I they've garnered good support for me in this stuff and I love a lot of the little things that they have done and we'll mention those. But I think there is a time and a space right now where something could be done that could benefit both us and them. We sold some more of these woodwick. They slow down in the spring and summer and speed up in the fall and winter, but we just sold another lot. And this is the baby powder melts 1995 plus shipping. So, you know, over the last year or so, there were some things that, like I said, there it's like eBay throwing us a bonus like finally, you know, this should have been done, but thank you. We'll take it.

[00:07:13]Little things like I love the feedback thing. I just looked at my feedback the other day. I don't even look at my feedback anymore most of the time because I'm getting that positive feedback from the people who don't live leave any feedback at all. I think I'm at 99.9% at this point. I don't even really care because it just doesn't make a difference hardly anymore if you consistently do what's right all the time by your buyers. You're going to have an okay feedback number and that was a change that I really liked. The whole, you know, items not delivered, you know, if the post office thing, that was a nice little benefit and they're backing us up. the international sales complete backup on that which I think is almost a necessity and you know you're charged a little bit more on an international fee but to have that complete backup and that logistic stuff that they're doing behind the scenes in our crazy world that we live in with you know all the VAT taxes and all the different loopholes and regulations and all the stuff going on all around the world. I've been impressed with that and I just made a couple of sales to Japan yesterday and I'm just like I love it.

[00:08:16]It's like I know this is going to go well. So, there's those things. There's one more I'm missing. It was the recent one. That's what it was cuz it just happened. The whole, you know, auction, they can't cancel unless, you know, they can request it. At least that's a minor improvement. I don't think it's a big deal, but it's something. Those are the kind of things that I think they should be doing all the time, looking for that common ground where they're not going to lose out on money necessarily. And they're losing out on money on some of this international backing this stuff up. You know what? I'm going to save this story for a minute. I heard a story the other day that I want to talk about as well, which kind of got me thinking about this, saying, you know what, maybe it is eBay's time. They're making money right now. Their numbers look terrific.

[00:08:59]Their growth looks okay. that maybe we can bump up those growth numbers, which really help us and not really take a bite out of the money that they're making, but really encourage some kind of connection that really has been lost over the years between eBay and its sellers. So, now it is time to dive into some of these numbers. We won't go in depth, just give you a picture of what I'm talking about. A little Wilson glove, just pay a couple bucks for it.

[00:09:24]that I knew it was going to be great, but this is the kind of thing that sells this time of year cuz people don't want to pay for a brand new glove to go play some softball tournament somewhere. 20 bucks plus shipping. I talked a little bit about these numbers the other day and I'm afraid when I did a little bit more research, I kind of misqued one of the numbers, but the overall picture was still accurate. The revenue growth near 19% year-over-year, $3.1 billion. GMV growth is also growing. I think I gave a different number. I every time I look these up in different places, it seems to be different, which is driving me nuts. But the revenue growth is growing at a higher rate than the GMV, which means meaning that they're not just growing their revenue based on growing the amount of sales that they have.

[00:10:10]They're growing it because their take rate is also growing. And we've talked about this for a while. You know, the fees going up on this and that. Well, they are collecting more money. their revenue growth. And let's face it, all of their revenue growth is coming from us. So, there's a lot of data that came out of that little reporting on Q1 looks terrific. There's actual growth, which means that our margins can be hurt a little bit and we could be making more money. That's what's happening with me.

[00:10:40]I'm looking at my margins slightly decreasing because of all the pressures that are on us, including the shipping that's just now gone up, which we haven't seen the data for.

[00:10:50]But so our pressures are increasing.

[00:10:53]eBay's aren't increasing nearly as much as ours. They've actually been making more money with fewer employees, fewer overhead. That's why I thought that feedback piece was so important because imagine, you know, adding that little feedback piece that makes us a little bit more comfortable where they're automatically adding that feedback if nobody leaves it. That's probably decreased their customer service support. the OCD people out there. It's like, man, I got that one negative feedback. I'm going to call eBay 900 times. I'm going to contact them. It's probably saved them money doing something like that. That was a very smart move. I'm looking for those kind of things that we love and don't cost them a dime. I love to look at Outlooks as well. We're going to look at Outlooks. We're going to look at the take rate and see really where this money is coming from. This was super cool. I picked this up at a sale and I didn't even really know what it was. It is a Tonka keepers pink snail coin coin bank. Any rate $13.95 for that guy plus shipping or girl. Couple little things I think are interesting but not to the point. Focus categories. Refurbished sneakers. Trading not refurbished sneakers but refurbished sneakers.

[00:12:01]Trading cards. Luxury handbags. Parts and accessories. That doesn't surprise me at all. Outperform the rest of the catalog driving the the acceleration in both metrics. Advertising boost.

[00:12:12]Firstparty advertising products delivered 33% revenue growth, showing faster growth than either gross volume or overall revenue. There are two that that's that's not shocking. It really isn't shocking. I've said this is what this is why they implemented this. And remember that thing didn't even really start. I can't remember the start date on that with the increase in let me get this right. the increase in attribution to the promoted listings. I believe it started over in Europe. So these are numbers not just for the United States but for also Europe. So that may be a key component in this. I'm not quite sure. But then the previous year and I don't remember the date on this but it was 2024 where they had that little 10 cent increase. We're going to talk about that in a minute. That is probably driving significant growth in 2025 if you're looking at year-over-year. even though we're looking at year-over-year in through the first quarter of 2026.

[00:13:12]So, you've seen that increase in the advertising fees essentially through the promoted attribution. And so, but you haven't seen that implemented over the entire year. In other words, I can see even bigger growth if you look at all of 2026 when it's over. I'm seeing a an outlook for this growth that they're seeing to increase even more. There are pressures on it. Like for instance, what's going to happen? Are people going to pay be willing to pay these increased shipping fees? And there's where I have a bit of a concern because eBay doesn't really care. I think they care, but it doesn't hurt their bottom line because people will still be willing to pay whatever the total amount is for an item, but we're not getting all of that money, but they're still getting the fees on it. So that increase in shipping doesn't affect eBay, it affects us. Now, where it could affect eBay, and it's yet to be seen, is if you're going to see a slower growth rate in the GMV. If you're going to see less sales because of it, then it will absolutely have an effect on them. We'll throw one of the number three sales in really quick right here.

[00:14:20]And this one is headed to Krabby Goats Attic. What a great name. I love that one. Christina, she got a number three enema. and it is headed your way and I hope he gets things moving for you. All right. So, even knowing that shipping part is coming, they're still the outlook. They're projecting eBay expects to sustain this momentum and I expect them to as well guiding for or excuse me, guiding for 2026 fullear GMV, which is what I was talking about earlier.

[00:14:49]Growth of 7 to 7.5% on a constant currency. Meaning that's not taking into account inflation. I mean if you don't grow at all you know if you're growing at the rate of inflation you're really not growing at all. So that is based on a constant currency which means that the real growth maybe it's let's say that let's say that 7.5% but 2.5% inflation the real growth is 5%. I have said that I have not been buying jeans and I have not. This is all the jeans I have. It used to be pretty much all I'd sell and I just got burned out on it. I got to find the right ones. Some rock and roll denim. I don't even know how long I've had them. They went off on 20 25% off $21 $2249 plus shipping. So, as I read this, you will see why, especially if you're doing the promoted listings, why your margins are shrinking. And there's other effects. There's outside stuff that eBay can't control, right? And yes, they can't control the post office, but that one's tough because like I said, they're making just as much money, if not more, when that goes up because they're charging a fee on that as well.

[00:15:55]And keep that in mind when you set your shipping rates. But this is the main driver. It's not, you know, increased yard sale prices or goodwill prices.

[00:16:04]That's the only factor here in tightening your margins. So in summary, eBay's 2026 strategy has successfully, and I don't want to miss that point, if I'm looking at Jamie Ioni as an investor only, I'm like, man, this guy's making me money. And that's his job. But you also have to look at the long term of this thing. And there are some concerns and I think a move in our direction even if it's minimal would go a long way. But back to the point strategy has successfully shifted towards higher margin revenue streams advertising promoted listings rather than relying solely on volume growth which there is volume growth allowing revenue to grow faster than the dollar of items the dollar volume of items sold. So yes, there are big growth categories, collectibles, autos, for instance. How advertising products impact the take rate and that's what I want to talk about next. I mean, they beat Wall Street expectations by 2% and that was at a high growth expectation. That's pretty impressive. I've got I got to admit that. I've just got to All right, I kept these on the ground cuz they've been selling so quickly. I'm about ready to move my our other ET jewelry that are in smaller lots over to here. These are not selling quite as well, unfortunately. I might have to reduce the price on them. Just a second. Those are just earrings. These are earrings and necklaces. [00:17:53]These are going out for $24.95 plus shipping. So, the current take rate, I believe it's the highest it's ever been, which is basically how much money are they extracting from their sellers on the same amount of goods or slightly growing goods. Take rate was 13.99%.

[00:18:11]I wish I had data, and I tried, but I didn't. I failed to find exact data going years and years back. My guess is that's the highest take rate they've ever had. I'm not certain of that, but I would bet on it. The take rate has been rising for over a year to cover in part new services like payment processing and firstparty advertising. The company reported 13.225% take rate for most transactions which increased in February of 2025. So that promoted thing and the jump up historical rate. the take rate has been consistently higher than in previous prepayment managed years. So there you go. That'll give you an idea. And that goes back to some decisions which a lot of people were complaining about that the shift from PayPal to direct payments and all that stuff. I didn't complain about it. I liked it. I still like it now. Very happy with it. Good decision for eBay. Good decision for us. No animals want to come in here today cuz it's raining. But they're looking.

[00:19:13]Here's a cool little guy that I picked up. Not because I was going to get rich on it because I thought it was super cool. Watch out. I'm sexy. And it's like a interesting material. It's not like PVC. It's like a hard plastic. But anyway, didn't sell for a ton. D bought this. D, are you a viewer? Probably. So, the gap check $8.96 for that one plus shipping. So, these numbers right here that I'm going to show you, which some of it's reiterating what I've already said, but it'll give you a better picture, are why I really think eBay should throw us a bone. They should do something to move in our direction. They should know that our margins are getting slightly smaller where their margins are getting slightly bigger. There is room here to do something I think is going to be good for both of us. Promoted listings as of January 2, 2026. That was the date I couldn't get earlier cuz I couldn't remember it. broadened its advertising attribution model. If a buyer clicks an ad, every sale in that of that item over the next 30 days is charged an ad fee. I just hate the fact that they use the word attribution when it doesn't always apply. It cannot be attributed, but that's neither here nor there at this point. Final value fee adjustments. As of February, this was the other date I couldn't get, of 2025, final value fees for most categories increased from 13.25 to 13.6 Six pre-order fees. As of March 15th, 2024, the pre-order fee or items over $10 in for items over $10 increased to 40. I think this is where the minor adjustment could occur. A lot of people I was a little surprised. They're like, it's 10 cents. If you can't run your business for 10, y'all, that's f if you sell 5,000 items a year over $10, that's $500. You don't I mean that's not nothing. So you know and that's on top of the 30 cents. It was 30 went to 40. I mean so 40 that's if you're selling 5,000 that's $2,000 a year. Don't tell me that's nothing. That's a lot. And I know a lot of people don't sell $5,000 5,000 items a year over $10. But there's a ton of you out there listening who sell 500 who sell a thousand who sell 2,000 3,000. That's a lot of money and you don't even really see it because it's just this incremental little jump.

[00:21:31]This one kind of blows my mind. And by the way, they're giving you the three reasons why they're making more money.

[00:21:38]I'm reading them. It's the attri the new attribution system. It's that jump in fees at the early part of last year and it's the 10 cent jump. What else could it be? That's how eBay makes its money.

[00:21:51]these T, you know, I sell Tupperware all the time, but it just blows my mind.

[00:21:55]Somebody paid I shouldn't say that way, but because people want stuff, they're willing to pay for it. This little guy right here sold for 12 bucks plus shipping. And the shipping now I have on this at $7.29. My wife listed this one.

[00:22:07]I think I would have done the shipping slightly less, but you know as well as I if you've been shipping lately, depending on where this is going, that might be what it cost. And then you throw in the fees they charge you on the shipping. But man, people are willing to pay $20 for this thing and I'm willing to sell it to them. I'll take it. So, I just looked. It's going to Minnesota, which isn't great, but it's $5.89 in shipping. And so, what I say $729. I think I would have done six. I'm trying to think of my next lower tier. $679. I think that's where I would have done it if I listed it. My wife gets frustrated with how much shipping is, but you know, let's face it, at $729, once you talk about the fees that you have to pay on that, and if you're paying for a box, it's almost break even at that point.

[00:22:51]All right, so we talked about the reason eBay is making more money. The promoted listing attributions, final value fee adjustments from last February, pre-order fees going up a dime, international fees as well, an additional 1.675% 675% fee is applied to international sales.

[00:23:09]To me, that's a win-win. You can charge me a $165 to open me up to these markets that have so many regulations and things and hoops that eBay jumps through, plus the backup if something goes wrong. That fee to me is well worth it. But I think there's some room to wiggle to give a little love to the folks who are making you more money. Looks like I have a couple of visitors. My goodness, I have three visitors. But I got to go out to the other shed. I wish I wouldn't let you all in. Good grief. Get out of there. I've got a few bins out there.

[00:23:42]The Voinich manuscript. I just picked this up. If you watch the com picker channel, paid five bucks for it and I saw comps from 30 to 40 and I listed it for 30 bucks lowend thinking I could say right off the bat. Then I sent a 5% off offer or something like that and sold it quick. 28.15 plus shipping. I don't often do that.

[00:24:06]Put it that low in the market, but I'm a little pressed for space for books. It was a big book. I was like, let's do that. Sold another one of these guys.

[00:24:31]Maybe that's your store name. Thank you, Valerie. And I hope he gets things moving for you. All right, back to the numbers. So, the best I can see because I don't see GMV going down. I see it going up for multiple reasons. A lot of people want, you know, gas prices and nobody's going to do whatever and the shipping. Well, if you're going to go out and buy stuff and find it out in the wild, it's going to cost you a lot of gas money, too. So, I'm seeing growth.

[00:24:53]That's what I'm seeing. That's what eBay is projecting. And that's what almost all reseller reselling type formats, marketplaces are projecting. And of course, you got to project that. But it's kind of coming to fruition after years of kind of not meeting the mark, but still seeing growth. So that 13.9% take rate. If nothing changes next year at this time, it's going to be significantly more than that. And they're going to be taking more, making more money, and seeing slight growth or maybe even better than slight growth in GMV. I think it's a ripe time right now to look at that fee structure and say you know what where can if not now when right is it just going to go up in per are we going to end up paying 25 is the take rate going to be 25% one day I don't know maybe they think they can do that to me that creates a vacuum for even more competition than you've already let in I think you could capitalize on this grow market share even more could be wrong I think you ought to look at that fe even if it's minimal Even if it's subtract and this isn't minimal, this is big, but taking away that 10 cents and returning it back to 30. I think that would be wise. I don't even care. Maybe it's 5 cents.

[00:26:04]Anything that goes the a different direction, especially with what you're going to see as a windfall with more and more promoted over the entire time period of a year. I think you ought to look at one of those things and cut it back. It would mean a lot for the relationship, I think, between eBay and its sellers. Because if eBay is doing this much better, there should be room to throw us a bone. So, it could be anything. It could be as simple as, you know what, that 10 cents on $10 or more, shoot, inflation's growing. Why not bump that up to $15 items or more? And then that helps the mom and pop regular little resellers who are selling 10, 12, $15 things like me. you know, you could do something in here that could change it. Maybe you could take a category that's struggling and, you know, that has a certain amount of sellers in it and reducing the fee structure in two or three different categories. There's all kinds of options right now. I think eBay is in a position to do something like that and to give us sellers a little bit back of what we're giving you. Both of my boys loved cars and I saw this one the other day. I'm like, "Yeah, those sell good." Rambulants. Whenever you can find a Rambulence, they go, "Okay, this one sold for $22 plus the shipping." So, a little Fossil Biffold wallet. While I'm looking for it, tell me down below. What do you think? Is it time for eBay to give a little bit back? I think if they gave a little bit back now, they still wake up this time next year and see their take rate even higher. I think because of the a full year's worth of the full implementation of the other promoted thing, but who knows? And a lot of people will say in the comments, they'll be like, "Bay will never do that." And you know, I expect eBay to want to make business money for themselves, but I expect us to as well. And this is a bit of a partnership. And if you don't do stuff like that, you might wake up 5 years from now and have less market share. And you might have a higher take rate, but make less money. All these things, they get paid the big bucks to figure out, right? $145 for that Fossil wallet plus shipping.

[00:28:10]One last point on this and then I'll pull the rest of these things and sum this thing up. But you know there's another little bit here too. I think eBay does better when they have very successful not just successful but knowledgeable sellers. The customer to I didn't talk about business to customer and customer to customer sales but that is the driving factor here. And I got to give eBay credit. They were smart enough to know with what's going on with Amazon that was the path they needed to take.

[00:28:38]Really wise decision in my opinion. But if you're dealing with consumer to did I say customer consumer to consumer if that's your model you're pushing which I think Ioni even said that that's the lane that you can see the most growth in I have no doubt about that and that's just a fact if you're an Amazon seller you know that part of their business isn't exactly where they're thriving or pushing and eBay is perfect for it. Sold a Tao Ho slot car. What are you looking for back there bud? And I didn't know I had any of these left. I thought I sold them out, but apparently I do have one left. No, I have two left. Hey, there you go. That this one right here, the Fiero, sold. This one hadn't sold. I'll pull it out. That one sold for 2175 plus shipping. So, if eBay is doing better and using, you know, I don't see the massive growth in sellers. I see the sellers that are selling well increasing. That's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to increase my business.

[00:29:36]if I have a little bit more capital to build out there to do whatever to expand my business that may be in the long run better for them as well to deal with fewer sellers or not have massive growth with sellers that are costing them money versus sellers that know what they're doing. I don't know if that's in their thought process at all.
