South Asians have a genetic adaptation called the 'thrifty genotype' that made their ancestors efficient at storing energy during food scarcity, but this same adaptation now contributes to insulin resistance, visceral fat accumulation, and heart disease at much lower body weights than in other populations, making standard screening tools like BMI and basic labs inadequate for assessing cardiovascular risk in this population.

Deep Dive
For generations, South Asians survived cycles of famine, drought, and food scarcityHinzugefügt:
Heart disease is already the leading cause of death in South Asians, and most people are being screened too late.
South Asians tend to develop insulin resistance, visceral fat, and abnormal cholesterol at much lower BMIs. That means you can have a normal A1C and a cholesterol panel that looks fine and still carry significant cardiovascular risk. This is why BMI alone is misleading in this population. What actually matters is fasting insulin, triglycerides, HDL, waist circumference, blood pressure, sleep quality, and muscle mass. True prevention has to start earlier, not after the first heart event. If you're a South Asian, save this and share it with your family, and follow for more content.
