Using movies as a visual crutch for hard sci-fi simplifies the narrative but risks outsourcing your imagination to a director's lens. It turns a rigorous intellectual exercise into a curated, passive consumption experience.

I made my boyfriend read Project Hail Mary with me..📖💌追加:
I just watched my new favorite movie of all time, and I cried seven times in the theater. My boyfriend wouldn't want you to know this, but he also cried, and it was very wholesome.
>> [laughter] >> I'm sorry for telling the entire world.
>> Yeah.
No, thanks. We both liked the movie so much that we decided to buy the book and buddy read it together. Show your book.
Yeah. We have the exact same book, and I am really excited. How about you?
>> I don't know how excited I can be for reading a book, but I'm looking forward.
You're not excited about reading books?
>> Yeah, I'm not really excited to read any book, really, but But you like reading.
I don't know. It's not exciting.
[laughter] You like reading.
>> it's not exciting. I don't know. I'm excited to read it with you.
>> Yeah, sure. It's will be fun.
>> Doesn't sound like it.
>> like weird? Yeah, let's talk about the movie. It's basically about this middle school science teacher that is contacted by the government to help them with an apocalyptic situation, let's say, and he ends up being the only one who can save the world in space on his own, or not really on his own. What did you like about the movie the most?
>> I liked everything about the movie.
Like, it's not just one thing. I think it [music] it was a whole package.
>> It is kind of funny at the same time and really wholesome, especially some moments. Very wholesome. So, what are you expecting from the book?
>> Probably more detail. I just want more scenes and a little bit more science, but I don't know about the rest of it.
I'm just going to go with it.
>> [music] [music] >> I want to learn astronomy. Will you learn with me? You want to be an astronomer, an astronaut.
Yeah, let's go.
>> [laughter] >> So, we've read about, I don't know, 60 pages or so. There's a lot more information in the book.
>> Yeah, a lot more detail and a lot more stuff I did not hear about in the movie.
No, no, not in the movie. Like, in general.
>> to learn science, don't you? I want to learn it, too. A lot more information, and you get a much in-depth view of, you know, the main character. You get to know Grace much better.
>> about the science, it's not that bad.
Like, if someone will be put off by it having too much science, it's not like that.
>> Yeah, up until now. I don't want to put it like that. Like, even for me, even though I don't really know much of anything. Mhm. It's okay. It's good.
>> It's really engaging and very easy to read. The writing style is really smooth. It's not like overcomplicated, what you would expect. There's this really funny scene that you couldn't possibly have in the movie cuz it's just his internal monologue, and he has some sort of amnesia after being in an induced coma, so that he can't feel the time passing while he goes through space.
And he doesn't remember anything about it. Let me tell you a little bit more about the story so you get an idea about what's going on. So, we are in space.
Yeah, we have amnesia. Dr. Grace has random moments when he remembers how he got there, but it's just piece by piece.
We do not know the whole story. So, this and the movie, they are dual timeline, let's say. So, we know who the enemy is, and basically we need to investigate further, and that's the next step. But before the next step, we meet up with an alien. I don't know if that's a spoiler.
I feel like you already know that, right? So, he meets an alien, and that's where we're at. We are meeting His name is Rocky. And it's a little bit different from the movie. Is it not, Alex? It is kind of as I was expecting. A lot more detail, a lot less feeling, you know. Mhm. And also, I'm really glad we watched the movie first.
>> Yeah, me, too. It made it really easy for me to imagine the whole spaceship, even though it's not 100% like in the movie, because I think in the movie, for stuff, it was a lot bigger, and it had like a window or something like that. In the book, it's not like this. The what?
What are we talking about?
>> The spaceship. The spaceship. Yeah, it doesn't have a window, and he only has the computers and He doesn't have a window in the at all?
>> It's different. It's a different feeling.
>> it has one, I missed it, and [laughter] I just got that conclusion. Okay. Grace, the main character, has to do a lot more science >> Mhm. Yeah, much more. things to figure out a bunch of stuff than in the movie, which is really cool in the book, but I get it why it didn't end up in the movie. Yeah, cuz it's a lot of information, and the movie has just the conclusions, but you don't you don't even realize you wanted the explanation in the movie, but now you have this, you want the explanation. I wanted to talk about Rocky and their first interaction and how different it is. Things happen in a different order somehow in in the movie to make it faster, but it's it's quite different. It's quite different.
>> Rocky, the alien, is a lot more considerate >> in the book.
>> in the book. In the book, yeah. Yeah, because he already prepared stuff for Grace. I like both the book and the movie.
But again, I'm really glad I saw the film first.
>> like the book and the movie are equally as good, but in different ways. The book has more than the movie, and the movie has better than the book in certain ways. It's just such a different experience, but at We're experiencing the same thing, but in different ways. I get the internal monologue, and I feel like that's so much better than without it. He's really funny in his mind.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, it's really fun. Mhm. I didn't have a book that I didn't want to put down in a long while. And you didn't want to put this down.
>> Yeah, yeah. Mhm. I get that.
So, theoretically, time travel is possible. There is time time travel. Yeah, it it is. Like, if space travel becomes something accessible, all the rich people can go in space and come back to Earth. You know, they stay on the spaceship for like 5 to 10 years, and they come back, and we're 100 years ahead.
>> We would be We would be much more ahead cuz then we would be like close to light speed.
>> Yeah. So, time travel is possible, technically.
>> not like in the sci-fi movies, but yeah.
See, it's like it makes sense because of relativity. But thinking of it, like, time travel isn't it is an abstract concept, but at the same time, it makes sense if we could get to light speed. Now, we don't know what we're talking about.
>> Yeah. Yeah, we're we don't actually know anything. The book is >> [laughter] >> It really makes you think about all these things.
>> Yeah, it makes you feel smart. You're not. No, yeah, yeah, we're we're really dumb, but I was trying to explain something for 5 minutes, so I'm not.
>> [laughter] >> Alex went to the bathroom, and I just want to say that I really like to read with him.
Buddy reading is really nice, so I'm going to force him to do this more often, and maybe it's going to be part of more videos in the future. I don't know.
I really enjoyed it. I don't know what he thinks about it. We have 100 pages left. So, we're chapter 23.
Yep. Okay. So, what are you hoping for for the ending of this book?
To be honest, I forgot what happened until now. Yeah, quite a bit of time passed since you last read. And I don't know where we are.
I think they kind of solved it. Not yet. They need to figure out how to transport the information.
Oh.
Okay. Okay. No no spoilers.
>> and probably we'll have another plot twist.
>> Now, what I am expecting or hoping for is more information about the final situation. You know, the ending. I just want more scenes. Yeah, okay. Right? Cuz it's fun. It's like really wholesome.
The ending, if you're if you're wondering if the ending is not, you know, it's not enough, that's not the case. The ending in the movie is satisfactory. I loved it. Okay, let's start reading.
This I did not expect.
What what are you thinking? What are you talking about?
>> Page 394.
Oh, I'm not there yet.
I'm sorry. Come on, read it. I want to discuss. Opinions. Opinions. I don't think we needed that, but okay. What do you mean? Like, they didn't need a reason for the memories and stuff. But yeah, it makes the whole scene a lot cooler. Yeah. And it's such a thing I didn't expect that to happen. And it makes Stratt Stratt is her name? Yeah. a lot colder.
I I felt like she was quite cold. Yeah, she's not like in the movie.
>> [music] [laughter] >> You scared me.
>> [laughter] >> I hit you a little bit too hard.
>> I don't know. It's okay.
I'm sleepy. What's going on? Yeah, I'm really tired, too. We did [music] eat some Greek food. I forgot to show you.
It was really tasty. You'll see it now.
>> Oh, god, it's so good.
So good.
So good and tasty?
Another plot twist. We have too so many more things.
>> there.
>> [laughter] >> Okay. 417.
Me, too.
>> Oh. Where? Did you skip the Half of the page?
>> the plot twist? Did you not realize it was a plot twist? Tell me what the plot twist is.
No, yeah. I don't think that is a plot twist. It's just this doesn't happen.
>> problem.
>> Yeah, it's another problem and they didn't do this in the movie and I get why. Like, I think this is what makes him, you know, in the end.
>> No, I think he solves it.
>> Mm, I don't think so. I think this is why. I love the book.
Yeah. But this is not as emotional as the movie. The movie is more emotional, but the book is more interesting.
Really beautiful. When they met. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
>> [snorts] >> Yeah.
>> I'm emotional.
>> [laughter] >> He didn't expect it. This was not in the movie. Yeah. This was not in the movie.
Such a moment. Oh my god.
Okay. We have just a few more pages left. Yeah.
We are done. We finished the book. It's 1:00 a.m. It took us 2 hours to read 100 pages. Is that bad?
>> Yeah, a little bit.
>> I don't know. For me it's normal.
>> It's decent.
>> It's normal. No, it's No, it's fine.
It's fine. He finished the book before me. I think because you took some pauses to like move around the camera and so >> you were fast. You were fast. Okay, thank you.
>> be happy. Okay.
>> You were really fast.
>> Thank you. Thank you.
>> Okay. Opinions. What do you think about the book?
>> it a lot. Let's say top 10 as I don't know for sure all the books that are in my top five. So, let's say top 10 just to be sure. I think anyone would enjoy this. Mm. But I've seen online some reviews which said that they actually hated the book.
Didn't like Let's not name names.
>> I didn't name anyone.
>> [snorts] >> I think if you're not into like science at all, not that I am. I am. Like, okay, sure, but I we don't know much. If you're not curious about it, if you don't want to make an effort. What?
Sorry. So, you are into science.
>> not nice. That's not nice. I am just tired. Okay. If you're not interested at all in at least reading all of those explanations and stuff like that.
>> Yeah, it's a lot and it's it's probably pretty tiring. But if you're okay with that, I think you're fine. You're going to enjoy this. I really liked it. I don't think I liked it better than the movie. I think exactly. They're two separate things.
>> Both. Just watch the movie and read the book. You need to do it like both. It's Yeah. I think I liked that I watched the movie. I think I said that. Watching the movie first. Yes.
>> Yeah, because you imagine the whole thing. Having to imagine a ship in this certain way, I think it would have been pretty hard for me, you know. So, having that in the movie, it's really nice. I prefer if I If the book and the movie are to be equally good, I prefer to watch the movie first cuz the book has more information and I'm still surprised by what happened. [music] Compared to the Most of what happens in the movie also happens in the book, even if it's in different order or a little bit changed, but it still happens. How many stars?
>> 4.5.
Why is not five?
Some were pretty slow some parts.
Really? I don't feel it was slow at any point.
>> I think by the end You are reading in one sitting. You are tired. No, no, no, no. By the end [music] I felt like we are constantly in a conflict [music] after conflict after conflict.
>> Okay. Just so you know, Alex has a problem with that. He's a very chill dude.
>> [laughter] >> Okay.
Dude. Dude, it's okay. Or guy. No, I'm a dude.
>> I, on the other hand, love having conflict after conflict after conflict.
So, this is perfect from that point of view. I don't really have anything to complain. It's It's no romance, okay?
There's no romance here, but it doesn't need any of that. You know, I love all these books, but this is >> not complaining, but I don't know. Just that 4.5. It's not my favorite, but it's a really good book and I really enjoyed it. I think the movie is still my favorite movie. Long story short, book is much more interesting when it comes to science facts and having more things going on and the movie is much more emotional and a whole experience. Yeah.
It's 1:20 a.m. and I think it's time to go to sleep.
>> Yeah. Thank you for watching. We had a great time reading the book.
>> Don't forget to like and subscribe.
Bye.
Bye.
