The Odyssey Explained in 5 Minutes (Homer vs. Nolan)

[00:00:05]He leaves Troy with 12 ships. He reaches Ithaca with no ship, no crew, and one furious sea god.

[00:00:14]Most disasters grow from pride, broken orders, or one ancient hospitality law.

[00:00:19]I am compressing 12,109 lines, 20 years, and one terrible commute into about 5 minutes.

[00:00:26]Why did Odysseus take 10 years to get home?

[00:00:29]The poem begins near the end because non-linear storytelling was apparently invented before Christopher Nolan.

[00:00:35]For clarity, I start at Troy.

[00:00:37]Odysseus leads the fighters hidden inside the horse that opens the city.

[00:00:41]After the sack, he sails for Ithaca, where Penelope and their son Telemachus are waiting.

[00:00:45]First stop, Ismarus. His crew raids the city, ignores his order to leave, and keeps celebrating. The locals counterattack.

[00:00:53]>> [music] >> Six men from every ship die before the voyage has properly begun.

[00:00:57]Then the Lotus-Eaters offer food that makes sailors forget home. Odysseus drags his smiling men back aboard. Next, Odysseus enters a cave full of cheese, despite his crew suggesting the excellent plan called leaving.

[00:01:09]The owner is Polyphemus, [music] a one-eyed giant who seals the cave and begins eating the visitors. Odysseus gets him drunk, says his name is nobody, and drives a heated stake into his eye.

[00:01:20]When Polyphemus screams that nobody is attacking him, the neighboring Cyclopes decide he needs rest. The survivors escape [music] beneath sheep. This is clever enough to end the problem. Then Odysseus shouts his real name from the boat because victory apparently requires a mailing [music] address.

[00:01:36]Polyphemus is Poseidon's son. He asks his father [music] to return Odysseus late, broken, alone, and surrounded by trouble.

[00:01:43]Poseidon hears [music] him.

[00:01:45]The rest of the voyage becomes that prayer delivered in installments. Aeolus gives Odysseus a bag holding [music] every dangerous wind, leaving one breeze aimed toward Ithaca.

[00:01:54]They can see home when the crew opens the bag [music] expecting treasure. The winds erase nine days of sailing.

[00:02:01]At the next harbor, cannibal Lestrigonians [music] smash 11 ships.

[00:02:04]Only Odysseus' vessel escapes.

[00:02:07]Circe turns [music] part of the remaining crew into pigs.

[00:02:10]Odysseus resists her magic and she restores them. They then sail with her for an entire year.

[00:02:15]The crew eventually reminds its homesick captain about home.

[00:02:19]Circe sends him to the underworld where the prophet Tiresias gives directions and one specific warning.

[00:02:24]Do not touch the sun god Helios' cattle.

[00:02:28]This instruction will enjoy a short and unhappy life. First come the sirens. The crew plugs their ears with wax while Odysseus is tied to the mast. He hears the song and begs for release.

[00:02:39]Proper delegation sometimes means ignoring your boss completely.

[00:02:43]Then he must pass Scylla, a six-headed monster, or Charybdis, large enough to swallow the ship.

[00:02:50]He chooses Scylla and hides the danger from his crew. Six men vanish while everyone keeps rowing.

[00:02:57]A storm traps them on Helios' island.

[00:02:59]Food runs out. While Odysseus sleeps, the crew kills the forbidden cattle.

[00:03:03]Zeus destroys the ship.

[00:03:05]>> [music] >> Every remaining sailor dies except Odysseus, who washes onto Calypso's island.

[00:03:11]Calypso offers comfort and immortality.

[00:03:12][music] He spends seven years there crying beside the sea and choosing home.

[00:03:18]The gods finally order his release.

[00:03:20]Poseidon wrecks his raft, but the Phaeacians carry him to Ithaca. He returns disguised as a beggar.

[00:03:25]His old dog Argos recognizes him, wags once, and dies.

[00:03:29]Inside, Penelope's suitors have spent years eating his livestock and demanding that she choose a new husband.

[00:03:34]Penelope delays them by weaving a burial shroud each day and secretly undoing it every night.

[00:03:40]Penelope sets one final contest. String Odysseus' bow, then fire through 12 axe heads. None of them can.

[00:03:47]The beggar strings it easily, makes the shot, [music] and stops pretending.

[00:03:51]Odysseus, Telemachus, and loyal servants kill the suitors.

[00:03:54]Ancient hospitality law enters its enforcement [music] phase.

[00:03:58]Penelope still does not trust him. She orders their marriage bed moved. He protests because the bed is built around a living olive tree.

[00:04:06]That secret [music] proves who he is.

[00:04:09]The reunion is real, but Athena must stop the [music] suitors families from beginning another war. That is Homer's version at criminal speed. Nolan keeps the adventure spine, then [music] changes the man inside it. Homer's Odysseus is a charming slippery liar.

[00:04:22]Matt Damon's version is more haunted [music] by Troy and his own cleverness.

[00:04:26]Nolan reduces the visible gods, removes episodes including the wind bag, and treats Athena more like a private conscience.

[00:04:33]He says the film needed new setups for modern viewers and fewer repetitions inherited from oral performance. He also centers xenia. Strangers receive hospitality because any stranger might conceal a god. Break that rule and monsters eat guests, suitors eat a household, and vengeance [music] keeps charging interest.

[00:04:50]The production is equally excessive. 172 minutes, six countries, and 2.1 million feet of IMAX film. Nolan wanted real ships, storms, and locations to make myth feel almost documentary. The result is not simply Homer filmed. It is Homer's survivor rebuilt as a Nolan protagonist.

[00:05:11]He escapes the Cyclops, then gives Poseidon his name.

[00:05:15]10 years later, the final test is not strength. It is whether home recognizes the man who returns.
