Modern aircraft are equipped with weather radar systems that function as the plane's 'forward eye' for detecting dangerous weather conditions. These systems emit high-frequency microwave pulses into the sky ahead of the aircraft, which bounce off precipitation like rain, storm clouds, and hail to create a real-time map of weather conditions. Pilots view this information as color-coded weather zones in the cockpit, enabling them to avoid turbulence and severe storm cells. The radar is housed behind a specialized nose cone called a radome, which must be strong yet transparent to radio waves. Due to its specialized material composition, the radome can be vulnerable to impacts from bird strikes or drone collisions, making it one of the most critical safety systems on every modern aircraft.
