The cattle futures market has shown a disconnect from spot market fundamentals, with futures prices declining despite record-high fat cattle prices of $260 and positive policy developments like the potential removal of beef tariffs, indicating that futures markets may not always respond immediately to favorable market conditions.

Feeder Flash 5/13: Horse WhippingAdded:
I'm Corbett Wall with DV Auction here with your feeder flash for Wednesday, May the 13th. Brought to you in part by Superior Steel Sales, home of Superior Standard Livestock Equipment. They've got heavyduty stuff you can incorporate right into your existing corral, including feeders and gates and panels and freestanding panels, crowding tubs, adjustable alleys, loading shoots, just about anything you can need. Or if you want to build your own, you can order raw pipe and steel from superior steels.com.
Horse whipping. Many have repeated a statement that I first heard this week from Brad Kimma, a respected commodities trading trader and independent feeder from Iowa. He said that a horse should go faster when you whip it, which makes sense. And we've been whipping this futures market here for the last two weeks and it has not responded. We got 260 for fats, all-time record high, higher than anybody thought it would ever go. And the futures do not respond.
just keep drifting lower and lower.
We've got a $12 basis on fat cattle and a lot of your hedge feeders are liking that. And then on Tuesday, we saw an executive order from President Trump where he was going to do away with the tariffs or much of the tariffs on imported beef to try to keep beef prices lower for our consumers. But then on late Tuesday, we thought, well, maybe you didn't go through with that. On Wednesday, we found out he indeed did not go through with that. And that should have been a positive for the board. It still did not respond. What's wrong with this board? Why ain't it coming up, guys? But most hedge feeders over the last 2 years wish they'd never heard of the futures market. Tell you what, these margin calls have been beating these guys up and they have not been able to take advantage of the higher fat cattle market and all these uh booming markets the last two or three years here guys. But uh you look at your uh board on Tuesday, June live cattle futures were down 170 at 24770.
August was down 247 at 24107.
Your back months on live cattle down 192 to down 280. Feeder cattle futures for May down 250 at 36590.
August was down 575 at 350 655 in your back months uh down more than that. Some of them down 502 to down 730. That's a beating guys. Look at your grains. Corn for July up 4 and 3/4 cent a bushel at 480. Soybeans for July up 13 and 3/4 cent a bushel at 1226 and 3/4. your hard red winter wheat for July up 45 cents at 731 and a quarter. Fat cattle trade on Tuesday. We saw more of that 260. That 260 was available Monday morning all day Monday and continuing in on Tuesday.
Iowa sold 500 head on Tuesday at 260 and that's 1,50 head for the week. Nebraska sold just a 100 head on Tuesday at 260.
That's 350 head for them this week.
Kansas sold 300 head at 260.50 head for them this week. And Texas sold 200 head at 260. That's 500 head for them. That's about as much as they ever sell.
So the fat cattle market is is as high as it was all of last week, guys. Board still not responding. We did have our market finder of Stockman's livestock market in Yankton, South Dakota on Tuesday, just like we always do. They had 1,200 head in overnight. 1750 head of fed cattle for their fed cattle auction in Yankton, South Dakota.

Choice cuts down 49 cents at 39073.
Selects were down 22 cents at 39127.
Your slaughter so far for the week up through Tuesday. Estimated cattle slaughter 210,000.
That's 5,000 more than last week at this point. 9,000 less than this point, the same week a year ago. Talk about what else is going on. It's almost going to be ready for your punchy pick of the month already, guys. We just had it and we're halfway through this month. Uh getting ready for that punchy pick of the month is a lot of fun. Feeder steers were $5 to $10 lower. feeder heers seven to $9 lower.
