[00:00:21]So this morning I was looking off at my my offscreen racks and thinking which modules have I been neglecting and the intro neon came to mind as a module that I've really spent very little time with. [music] Neoni is an analog oscillator.

[00:00:42]It is a triangle core through zero oscillator. And whilst I don't know exactly what that means, my assumption is that the the various waveforms are all derived from triangle waves.

[00:00:55]And I think through zero means that it's going to be very good at FM modulation.

[00:01:01]So that's going to be something I want to check out today. But yeah, in the rack we have PA's maths. We then have the variable waveform generator, which is one of my favorite analog oscillators, and I think it's going to pair nicely with Neon because we can get some really nice FM modulation happening. There's also a sync input that I'd quite like to explore.

[00:01:24]Then we have the kind of usual setup.

[00:01:26]Um, VCA, dual dagger. I've got the LXD in because, uh, the Nony has a very nice wave folder. So we do have some some West Coast flavor in there. So that may come into play. Then the usual Badm effects and effects aid ending to the chain. So yeah, let's check out the uh Neoni. And I've got a little opening jam here, which is sounding pretty cool.

[00:03:19]There are five independent outputs. We have a square wave, a sawtooth, a triangle wave, a sine wave, and then at the bottom we have this out output which is essentially a sine wave with a wavefold.

[00:03:40]>> [music] >> And I do love me some wave folding, especially with a bit of delay [music] and some modulation.

[00:03:57][music] >> [music] >> So that is very nice. The other thing I want to show you here is on the sawtooth output.

[00:04:20][music] We actually have a a modulation effect here as well.

[00:04:28]Take the delay off. [music] It almost goes up an octave.

[00:04:35]>> [music] >> And we can actually use the same CV input to modulate that one. [music] We just need to flick it to this.

[00:04:50][music] [music] >> [music] >> So that's really nice. But I think where this module really shines is with the FM. So let's go back to the main output.

[00:05:15]And I'm going to use the waveform generator here to modulate the neon. So, um, let's take this sinewave output, patch it into the [music] FM input.

[00:05:47]>> [music] >> And I think the idea here with through zero is that you get more musical sounding FM. And up the top we actually have a traditional FM and a through zero FM switch. So we can compare the flavors. This is traditional [music] and through zero. [music] And it does seem to me to hold the fundamental notes better in through zero. Let's patch [music] a sequence into the waveform generator. I've got one here actually coming from PMS.

[00:06:51][music] Of course, we can bring in some wave folding.

[00:07:05]Or alternatively, we could modulate that.

[00:07:16][music] And actually I do quite like to do the same sort of modulation technique into the volt per octave input.

[00:07:44][music] [music] And finally, I'm going to take another envelope out from maths, patch it into the filter.

[00:09:21]The final thing I want to take a look at [music] is the sync input. And for this, I'm going to take a a richer output. I'm going to try the sawtooth.

[00:09:35][music] And then I'm going to patch a sawtooth from the variable waveform generator into the sync input.

[00:13:37][music] >> [music] >> So, there's really nothing uh fancy going on with this jam. And I kind of stumbled across it by accident. Um, I was messing about with a kind of sync patch and I created this sequence by accident and I thought, well, that sounds nice. So, I hooked up the OP1 to find something to play over the top. I found this bass sound.

[00:14:34][music] And I thought that sounds epic or like certainly very like like an 80s sort of energetic ballad.

[00:14:48]And there is something kind of cool going on with beads. I've basically just got the density all the way up. So, we're getting this nice almost like a counter melody, which really does work with And then some drums on the KO2, some improvised singing and you've got yourself a track.

[00:20:04]So, I do have the subosscillator from the uh variable waveform generator coming into my VCA here just to sort of ground the the more noisy FM stuff coming out of Neon.

[00:20:37]Now modulationwise [music] couple of things going on into the wavefold. I actually have channel one of math which is being triggered by pans and I'm running uh a ukidian pattern I guess using the ukidian steps and ukidian triggers. But what I've done is set the ukidian steps to 15. And my thinking is here that this will create some kind of polytric thing. And this is modulating the wavefold.

[00:21:25]So there is some kind of weird poly rhythm happening which is cool.

[00:21:42]And I think if we bring in the drums, [music] you'll probably hear better that it is a polytric thing.

[00:21:57]>> [music] [music] >> And there's just a really nice combination here of, you know, the wavefold amount, [music] the FM amount, >> [music] >> That's nice.

[00:22:29]As well as the coarse tune.

[00:22:37]And I guess finally I have channel four of math which is modulating my filter but it's also modulating the volt per octave input.

[00:22:49]>> [music] [music] >> So, there's so many parameters to experiment with and there's definitely lovely sweet spots to be found.
