️Simple Guitar Theory for Deadheads!

[00:00:00]Hey, what's up, deadheads? So, all of my students end up wanting to learn a little bit about guitar theory.

[00:00:07]And I say, you know, there's this whole thing about the 1 4 5 progression.

[00:00:11]There's Each one of them has their relative minors, and it ends up producing how most songs are written um chord-wise.

[00:00:20]And so, let me give you a quick example.

[00:00:22]Let's just do what's called a 1 4 progression. So, if you're in the the alphabet and you start on A, so you're the musical note of A, and you did your alphabet A B C D, D would be the fourth note in the key of A. And then that's what sounds out do re mi fa. So, A is the one, D is the fourth. So, if I find that on my six-string, my E string here, fifth fret A, right underneath of it's the four, there's the D.

[00:00:50]If I just played those as, you know, bar chords, four. [music] And I got the bass note, that's an A to a D. So, even open chords, >> [music] >> that's a 1 4 progression.

[00:01:13]Now, you've heard that a million times in so many different songs, but not every song is in the same key. So, if you were to take this 1 4 progression A to D, just by looking at your fretboard, and moved it down to let's say the G to C, a 1 4, it'd sound this. Here's the one, G.

[00:01:32]Here's the [music] four, the C.

[00:01:39]So, when you're going like, "I didn't know from Reno, [music and singing] I was dealt 20 hands.

[00:01:45]Didn't get to see that night till morning came around." That's a 1 4 progression. Or if you're going, "Mama [singing] said don't go [music] near that >> [singing] >> river.

[00:01:59]You know, that's a 1-4 progression. If you're going uh If my words take glow.

[00:02:07]>> [music] >> And then [singing] I go to the four chord.

[00:02:12]It's the same thing. If I go >> [music] >> I had a four [singing] chord.

[00:02:20]>> [music] >> Then I go to [singing] the one.

[00:02:24]Four two to one four two.
