Introduction || Finishing Materials and Systems for Building Applications
Added:Hello everyone. I'm Dr. Adita Sanal from the department of architecture planning and design Indian Institute of Technology, BHU Vanasi. I'm offering this course on finishing materials and systems for building applications and it is my pleasure to welcome you all. I'll be your core course coordinator and Mr. Disharti and Miss Suman Moria will be assisting us throughout the program. Let us begin with a simple thought. In architecture and construction, we often focus on structural elements like beams, columns and foundations that provide the structure and stability. However, what truly transforms a structure into usable and meaningful space are the finishing materials.
Finishes are not merely aesthetics. They play a crucial role in making buildings functional, comfortable, safe, and durable. And in many ways, finishing materials define how we experience architecture.
This course has been designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of building finishes in line with schematic components of a building. The structure is divided into eight modules exploring topics such as wall finishes, flooring, ceiling, and roof treatments.
We'll also explore defects in finishes, understand their causes, learn methods to rectify them. Further, we'll discuss specialized finishes used in buildings where performance such as hygiene and durability are more crucial. In example, buildings like hospitals and industrial facilities.
This course will combine and compare different finishing materials, their installation techniques, their detailing and real life case studies along with a focus on sustainability and emerging technologies.
By the end of this course, we'll be able to evaluate, select, and specify appropriate finishing systems for different building requirements.
Towards the end, you'll be able to develop a practical knowledge which can be applicable to real world construction projects. I encourage you all to ask questions and engage in discussions throughout the course.
We have listed down certain reference books which one can refer before we start with the program and that should give a basic background for preparing for the program. With that let us begin our journey into the fascinating world of building finishes. Thank you and I wish you all a productive and enriching learning experience.
