In Portuguese, 'ser' is used for labels (identity, nationality, profession, inherent characteristics) while 'estar' is used for status updates (current feelings, location, temporary conditions). The key is to ask whether you're describing what something fundamentally is (ser) or how it is right now (estar).

Ser vs. Estar | The Easiest Way to Understand It
Added:Want to learn Portuguese fast? Today, we will learn the easiest way to understand said versus shad in Portuguese, so you can stop guessing and start choosing the right one naturally.
Let's go.
Vamos.
Said versus e shad. The very simple beginner version. Label or status.
English uses one word. Am or is or are. Portuguese usually makes you choose. For example, in English, you would say, "I am American." Or you would say, "I am tired." Both use am in English, but they're different ideas.
Portuguese asks, "What is it?" or "How is it right now?"
The word said is a label. It tells what someone or something is. The word shad is a status update. It tells how or where something is now.
Said tells what someone or something is.
Think of it as a label. Use said for labels like these. Your identity, so who you are, a job or role, what you do, or your nationality, where are you from?
Let's go over some examples. I am Nikki.
So uh Nikki.
So uh Nikki. So uh Nikki.
This is who I am.
I am American.
So uh Americana.
So Americana. So Americana. This tells where I am from.

O gelo é frio.
O gelo é frio.

Cold is part of what ice is.
Again, ser is what it is.
Ask what is this person or thing.
Now let's focus on the word estar. Estar tells how or where something is right now.
Estar focuses on status. Use estar for statuses like these.
How you feel, where you are, or how it is now.
Let's go over some examples. I am tired.
Eu estou cansada.
Eu estou cansada.
Estou cansada.
This is how I feel right now.
He is sick.
Ele está doente.

Estar focuses on how or where it is now.
Ask, "What is the current status?"
