There's a cylinder with a movable piston containing gas molecules. Inside the cylinder, about 50 molecules [music] bounce around like tiny tennis balls. We zoom in to focus on one molecule among the others. The kinetic energy of that molecule depends on the square of its velocity. When we press the piston, we compress the gas and the molecules collide more energetically.
Those collisions [music] raise the molecules velocity, so their kinetic energy increases. The average kinetic energy of the molecules is what we measure as temperature. Therefore, as pressure on the enclosed gas increases, [music] the temperature goes up.
