WILL THIS UNTESTED 1955 FORD MAKE A 1200 MILE DRIVE HOME?
Added:Welcome back to another episode of Atomic Era Motors. This video is starting out a little bit differently than anything else I've ever done. I am right now in a van with Mike. Hey, >> wandering Iron. You should go check out his channel. Uh we are currently in the middle of Utah somewhere. Is that right?
>> Utah. Yeah, southern Utah.
>> Uh we're driving through Monument Valley.
>> Yes, we are in Monument Valley. And the reason that I am in a van with Mike is because my 59 Plymouth Fury is dead in Gallup, New Mexico, and I had to put it in a undisclosed location until I can come back for it. So, I am stranded at least 1,000 miles from home and I need a car. So, we have got to find a car.
There it is. You are looking at a 1955 Ford Fairlane. This is what I went and bought. It's about 80 miles north of Canab up in Cedar City, Utah. This is the car that is supposed to get me home and do what the Plymouth wouldn't do.
So, it has got a 292 Yb block in it, rebuilt supposedly. Uh the Fordmatic 3-speed allegedly. It seems like it's only got two gears right now. So, you know, we're gonna do some checking over.
I think it's actually low on fluid, but it runs, drives, has brakes.
I mean, you can't argue with that. And makes great oil pressure. We're making like 50 lbs just cruising. Stays cool.
Alternator's charging. Um, yeah. You know, this is her interior. We got some questionable upholstery going on in there. That is going to go away immediately.
Yeah, that's uh not bad. Somebody did attack the car with a brush or spray paint. I don't know. It looks like a brush. I think it would have been a coral color.
All the trim. I think I've got most of the trim. It's in the trunk. Notice dual exhaust. It is very, very loud.
old cracked bias plies, which is perfect.
But yeah, kind of a neat neat little car. I mean, hopefully it'll do what it needs to do. What do you think? I >> think you got screwed, but good job.
[laughter] It'll make great content.
>> And we're currently putting some uh transmission.
>> You got a bottle bottle of molasses you're adding to the transmission. Yeah, we're rebuilding the transmission actively right now.
>> I I think I saw uh a clutch van just go in the >> I think I just saw it go down the funnel. Yeah, >> going right.
>> Some went down the funnel.
>> Yeah, we're going to just kind of see what we can do. We're going to take the interstate back, I think, instead of the mountains. Uh well, I guess there's probably mountains either way, but you know, instead of two-lane windy curvy roads that you could die on easier.
We're going to take the interstate back about an hour and a half drive.
Hopefully she makes it to Canab. Hey Terry, what did we just figure out about this transmission fluid situation?
>> Well, when you read the transmission fluid, it's saying that it's full, but we're having slippage in the thing. This cover is being pushed up when we push it in. You can make it as deep as you want depending on how hard you want to push it. You have to hold it at the stop point, push it in, and then you'll get your actual reading right there.
>> So, is she very low?
>> So, you're going to show you're full when you're 3/4 low.
transmission fixed in it.
>> Yeah, we put new clutches in it in the core.
>> Yeah, we rebuilt it right now.
>> So, now we probably still have some in the tube, but we ain't raiding [ __ ] >> Yeah. Yeah, it's low. All right. Well, we're going to fill this up and see if it makes any difference. We're going to put gas in it and uh hit the interstate.
See what happens.
Can I get out that way?
No. All right.
Will it go into drive?
It's trying to It wouldn't do that before.
I was having to take off in low.
Might be getting better.
Yep. We're just going to run over to the gas station and get some gas and check back with you then. We were looking all over for the gas filler. It's right there cuz I'm now at a different gas station. The one over there, the pump didn't work and there's no building. So, filling it up now. The gauge says it's pretty much full. We'll see how much it takes. I am putting premium in it. Um, should be able to get back to canab on just a tank of gas. I think the transmission is also attempting to take off from drive now. So, we might be on to something. It might be okay. It might come back around. We'll see. Now, this car, much like the Fury, also leaks when it's full of gas, so that's great. Boy, I'll be glad to get the hell out of this town. Couldn't hardly get in or out of anything. And there's people everywhere.
Must be something going on.
So, we got about 80 miles or so till we get to Canab.
Car is running okay. It's just super rich or something. And that's why I'm wondering too about that linkage. If that linkage is going to be a little bit off for going to that transmission, that could be dual purpose. It's holding open those flaps and it's causing your linkage for your uh gear to stay open, which will cause it to slip.
>> Yeah, we'll see. We will investigate more when we get there cuz I'm going to have to change the oil and do se give give it a good once over. Maybe pack the wheel bearings. So on the interstate we're doing like 5560. It's probably all the faster I'm going to take it till I get a chance to look the car over. You know, I was just thinking by the way this car is acting and running super rich and kind of bogging down. I And the guy also said the choke's not hooked up.
I wonder if the choke is stuck shut. I'm going to have to look at that at some point.
But it's running nice and cool. It's charging. Making insane oil pressure.
It's doing okay.
Boy, this is neat.
Now we're down on a narrow mountain road. This is pretty pretty great place to test a car you know nothing about.
You know, take it right through the mountains. I'm sure the brakes and everything are all brand new, you know.
Okay, here's the real test. We're going up into the mountains now.
60 miles of this till we get to Canab.
This is so neat up here. That guy's in a hurry. He's about 6 feet off my bumper.
That's okay. I don't care.
We're doing the speed limit anyway. So all right, give us an update. I mean, honestly, nothing's changed. It's doing pretty well. We're holding 180, 190 in the temperature. Good oil pressure.
still charging. Still have brakes. Um, and we're climbing through the mountains right now.
>> But the cigarette lighter doesn't work.
>> Cigarette lighter. We're going to have to fix that for sure. I don't even know if the lights work on this either. I didn't bother to look. Didn't look at the U-jints. Nothing. Didn't just bought it pretty much. Just said, "Yeah, I'll buy it." Here we are. So, about halfway to the We're about halfway to Canab now.
So, just see how it goes. I just realized now is a good time to point out I am like 13 or,400 miles from home in a 55 port that I know nothing about. Yeah, hopefully it makes it the rest of the way through poverty tour. I'm going to give it a shakeddown when I get back to the hotel. But yeah.
Yeah, I'm still just cruising along. Got about another 40 30 40 miles to now.
Terry was just reminding me how the tires are in bad shape. old dry rotted bias flies. But conveniently, I don't have a spare. So, you know, might try to find a spare before I take off. Surely somewhere or somebody in Canav has one I can use. But keep on going. I'll check back in with you guys if anything happens. If not, I'll see you in Canav.
Made it back into Utah. We've been in Arizona. Actually, the route we took takes you down south Utah. But right up here should be rolling into Canab. That means this car just did 100 miles absolutely untested. Knew nothing about it.
Um, you know, didn't have time to really look it over, but basically just bought it, hopped in it, and Mortsky and Jim and everybody said, "Don't buy it." And I bought it. But we made it. 100 miles.
The Ford made it. Absolutely no problems. 100 miles. We just had a nice lunch. I am now going to be transferring all of my into this car because I also need to kind of know what I've got. I don't even know what I have. I need to find a CB radio.
Um, and Brill Cream. Brill Cream is the most important thing. I left my hair stuff in the hotel in Gallup. So, Gallup was just an allaround terrible experience for Atomic Era Motors. Yeah, I'm going to throw everything in here.
Go run some errands, get her back to the hotel, give it a once over, change the oil, put in a fixed cigarette lighter, stereo does have stereo, by the way.
Okay.
>> See speakers. But yeah, I'm going to do that. Uh, if anything happens, you will see. Oh, do you like the trunk release?
Huh?
So, at the parts store, ran into Big Mike. He wanted to give the 55 a good uh run around the block.
This is way too much fun.
>> Had to explain to him how you shift it.
Still likes to start off in low.
Here he comes in it.
See it over there.
Is he coming back? [laughter] >> Well, what do you think?
>> I think I need one.
>> Oh, so you like 50s cars?
>> Oh, I love 50s cars. I've always liked 50s cars. But >> do you think Vic needs a car like this?
>> Uh Vic definitely needs a car like this.
You're right. You're right about that.
So, oh my god, this is great.
>> Got to push hard on the door.
>> Push hard on it.
>> Yeah.
>> And pull the handle.
>> Pull.
>> Okay. I don't know which way it needs to go. That's part of the problem.
>> Well, I'm going to go acquire some beer.
Start working on my car.
>> I think that's a good idea. Beer. We'll see you there.
>> Here. Investigating the Ford.
>> First thing we'd like to try to figure out. This kick down business can have something to do with it not liking second gear. So, we're going to see if we can get any kind of adjustment out of this rod and throttle. I don't know.
This is like worse than a Mopar kick down assembly. I mean, this is actually part of that looks homemade. That is definitely homemade.
I don't know what the hell's going on with that.
This is all homemade.
I'm not sure what the deal is. We're going to mess with it and see if we can't get it adjusted. Also have to fix the headlights. Uh, they don't work even though I was told they did uh by the seller. Um, cigarette lighter. Need to fix that so I can charge camera equipment and whatever. Those are the big things.
>> I'd like to find a CB radio to put in it, but haven't had any luck finding one yet. So, yeah. I got all these guys to help >> and possibly more.
>> We're We're helping. We're ready.
[laughter] We're going to have a beer about it >> right now. I've got the kick down disconnected. We've got it in drive and I'm going to move the kick down lever which will in theory give more pressure and we'll see if it'll go into second.
>> Yep. Yep.
>> Yeah. So, that's missed. Not adjusted.
>> The kick down's just not adjusted right.
That >> That's been my biggest fear of this car.
>> No, we'll be good. We just got to adjust that.
>> Yes, sir. All right.
>> So, it's got the hood pulled off a little bit. Steve was tired of hitting his head on it. So, right now I've got this kick down. All I'm doing is trying to adjust this by spinning this out. See that rod is threaded and there's a jam nut. But if I spin this out, that will then make this rod longer and hopefully will give us the the right amount of initial pressure to get it into second gear.
>> There. Essentials. Removing the >> Oh, it's made out of cardboard.
[laughter] What are you actually doing?
>> Just a cardboard box wrapped in weirdo skeleton.
>> That is correct.
>> Nice. I'm glad that's gone.
>> That had to go.
>> Yes. Yanked the kick down out of it. You see >> at >> it was getting in a pretty good bind. We just bent it with a wrench. Going to get under there and shove it back in there.
And I'm also going to retorque all the fan bolts or torque, you know, tighten.
>> It's leaving a slight trail everywhere it goes.
>> Yeah, it's leaving a Yeah. What do you call that? [laughter] >> Found out if you play with the kick down and it needs approximately a 3/4 deep well socket worth of line pressure which forces the kick down lever down. It'll go into what we believe to be second gear. So, we're now going to take it out and see if there's a definitive 23 shift when we take it out on the road. Then we will know maybe if it has all three gears. All right, got it backed out.
Okay, went into what we believe to be second.
Oh, that takes off way better. It >> does.
>> Now, will it shift?
>> Yeah, that is the question. The burning question. Will it shift into third?
It didn't shift yet, but >> yeah, it's only 20 mph, though.
Damn, this thing does sound good though.
>> [ __ ] cop magnet. Straight pipes. No good. [laughter] >> No, I don't like that.
>> No, that didn't make sense.
Now we don't have dirt.
Let's pull into the Laquenta and undo the uh what we did, I guess.
>> Yeah.
>> Do you have something to sniff that off with?
>> [ __ ] My knife's not in my pocket.
>> Me neither.
>> Hey, you got a knife on you by chance?
>> I do.
>> Oh, you got her.
>> I've got one.
>> There we go. Now I should be able to go back to just manually shifting it. So, okay.
Unless it is speed. Well, we can't.
That's the other thing.
We're having trouble doing research on this thing, figuring out what this transmission is. So, >> yeah, >> it doesn't look like anything that we >> are doing is >> trying to figure Yeah, I don't think we pulling low.
Pulling low.
Yeah, it will.
See if it'll do anything right now.
>> I do kind of address it later on in the video, but I'll go ahead and explain it now since you guys are probably all wondering. I didn't really explain it very clearly from the beginning. This car is either a two-speed for automatic or the 3-speed for automatic. From what I was able to research and understand is on the 3-speed transmission, when you put it in drive, it should start out in second gear and then shift into third.
and that is your only shift. Now, the problem with this one is in order to get it to take off, you pull it down into low and then you are able to bump it up into drive and then it goes into either second or third gear, whichever it is.
Uh we tried doing research on casting numbers and there's a tag and everything on the transmission and uh none of that led to anything. We could not definitively determine what this transmission is. And I know nothing about Fords. Uh neither did anybody there. So again, we uh just are trying to figure out what we can do, figure out what it even is. So we played around with the kickown for a while and then we actually tried adjusting the band to see if maybe the band was loose. So yeah, just thought I would uh go ahead and explain that so you got a little bit better idea of what we're trying to deal with. It's the bias pl. It's only It's only >> Yeah. Yeah. Just the bias pl.
>> It's just the bias.
>> Now pull back into the police station.
>> Yeah. We share the parking lot with a police station.
>> Yeah. It's Who picked this hotel?
[laughter] >> So things have escalated a little bit.
>> That winding mode just stopped. We're giving it a second gear band adjust adjustment while in the car. There's something there at second, but it just is real slippy. So, we've currently got it in second gear. And we're tightening up the band a little bit.
>> We have second gear.
>> Yeah. Let's take it down the road and see if it'll shift.
>> You can adjust this on the fly.
[laughter] We just had it sitting there idling in second gear and Oh, please please shift when we go out here.
>> I wonder if she wants to go through the ride. Have to cut that.
>> She probably does. It's not even looking out.
is a little high.
>> There's no [ __ ] No [ __ ] But I also didn't man it.
I kind of feel bad doing that in this neighborhood, >> but we're on the right track. Let's stop here and try it. Tighten it a little more.
>> Tighten it a little more.
>> Cuz it still did slip there.
>> Yeah. I wonder now if we're not getting enough pressure to it might shift if I matt it down. Matt it and engage the kick down.
Is it pretty loose?
There's There's neutral.
Oh. Oh, that's a lot better.
Now we might have the modulator too.
>> Yeah, that might be too much.
>> Yeah, let's loosen it, baby.
>> That might be too much.
>> What the hell?
Take everything back out of it.
>> Yeah.
>> How many turns back?
>> Like turn and a half or two.
>> Oh, I would take more out of it than that.
because now we don't have third at all.
Another Okay, so update on the fair line. Uh, Canadian Steve did some research and we have determined that it is a two-speed.
>> That explains why it acts like a two-speed.
>> That's probably why it acts like a two-speed. Um, and the reason you have to manually shift it is probably because it's, you know, it's basically a hot rod. It's hot rod black. It's got straight pipe. Someone probably put a manual valve body in it, which I don't even know if you can get for these, but you know, it's a hot rod. So, I'm just going to slam it back together and then probably um drink cuz I would like to have at least one night where I'm not up all night working on my car. So, yeah.
This car made it 100 miles. It'll make it like 1500. I think that's how far I have to go.
>> We could do without.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Should we repack the front wheel bearings? Probably. Are we going to? No. Um change the oil? Maybe.
Might change the oil still. it. I mean, is it even Is it dirty?
It's not that dirty. Like, >> it's barely dirty.
>> It's >> Well, that's fine.
>> Yeah, it'll >> make 1500 miles.
>> Yeah, I might if I feel real froggy at some point, I might change the oil, but we're just going to slam the hood back on it and call it a night.
>> If you couldn't tell, obviously, I am burned out. I am done after everything that happened with the Fury. If you'd already seen that video, I had literally spent every night of this trip this far, staying up till 11, 12, 1 in the morning working on my car. And at this point, I pretty much just threw in the towel and was done. [laughter] If you couldn't tell, I was just wanting to hop in the car and go and was willing to face whatever could potentially happen as it happened. Good morning. Car is still here. I'm just loading it back up with everything. Steve is over there struggling with his car. He's going to have some work to do this morning. But let's put everything back in my car and see how it fires up today.
On you. You got to put it in neutral to start it.
Oh jeez. Can't get any better than that.
I'm going to run over to the tire shop.
I need tires. Steve needs tires. So, let's go see how that goes. Worse.
>> Yeah. So, the Ford got brand new tires.
It looks like it's just been neutered.
[laughter] The car now has no balls anymore.
>> Low rider.
>> Not quite low rider status. Just uh >> It looks like a roller skate.
>> Yeah, it kind of does look like a roller skate.
>> It doesn't look as bad as my car.
>> It looks like it won't kill you on the interstate now, though.
>> It looks like it won't kill me on the interstate. Look at those little baby front [laughter] tires. I think those are for a golf cart or something. It looks like, you know, you're getting ready to hop the front end.
>> That's what I'm saying. I'm going to change my whole game. Instead of turbos, I'm going hydraulics and airbags.
[laughter] >> Well, you guys, >> they said that this thing was a 1 in towed out.
>> 1 in. That ain't bad.
>> This alignment shims fell out of the passenger side. It eat both front tires.
>> Left rear tires almost gone.
>> Nice.
>> It'll be great.
>> Yep. Well, I think here momentarily we'll head out to the meetup.
Yeah, there ain't many people left. I think most people are >> waving. Yeah, we'll get there.
>> Well, I sure hate the radials, but man, the car drives a lot better.
>> I mean, it doesn't try to pull all over the road anymore, which makes me feel a lot better about the front end, too.
>> Say hi.
>> Hello. Made it to the meet up. Ford did all right so far.
>> Well, we just left the meet up.
I think we're uh headed to Moab now.
[music] >> I just subbed off for fuel and stuff.
Just a few miles from where I was. Car is doing great. It's getting probably about 13 14 miles to the gallon. That's like how can you complain about that?
running this ridge up here at this high of elevation. Like doing really well so far. [music] >> We just pulled off here.
>> You said my car was leaking something all over yours.
>> A little bit. Yeah.
>> Oh man.
>> I thought it was out of your AC, but I hit the wipers like, "Nope, it ain't water."
>> Yeah, it could only be water, gas, oil, or ATF.
>> It wasn't smoking and I didn't smoke oil. So, >> yeah. The car actually I don't think uses any oil, but it does leak ATF. It was way >> I'm going with gas. It was clear, so >> Oh, yeah. Who else was behind Jesse? I got wind.
>> The car is doing great, though. It's got enough power. Little down on power in the mountains, but it's able to pull through it no problem at all. I'm able to keep up with Dalton now.
>> Oh, is this a windshield cleaning service?
>> Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
>> Thank you. Tip, though. See, I think I got a nickel.
>> Is that enough?
>> That's about where it goes. 50s, [laughter] right?
I stopped here in Escalante for a had a nice little place for lunch and just kind of hanging out. Get back on the road here in a little bit.
I found something out about the Ford.
Um, above about 80 miles an hour, there's a little bit of a drive line vibration, possibly U-Jint or maybe unbalanced drive shaft. I don't think it's anything in the front end cuz I could feel it through the pedal, you know, the drive line. So, I don't know.
Not too worried about it. But, she's keeping up with everybody. Kind of cool.
Wasn't able to do that before. Now, we just all stopped for fuel. Few other guys are getting gas. Looks like we're headed back up into the mountains.
Golden nights make it to Moab. So, we just passed through Escalante.
Yeah, still going good.
Looks like we're going to pull in here.
The scenic turnout.
Wow. This is going to be some sketchy.
It said 14% grade back there.
>> Hey Jesse.
>> Yeah.
>> Aren't you glad you swapped the tires out?
>> Yeah. I'd be dead by now. When you're done, they still work.
>> That's cool.
>> Seriously, man. I love the Y block. I love it. It is It is literally a black cloud out of your exhaust pipes right now.
>> Sorry.
>> I don't care. I think it's awesome.
[laughter] >> It's doing what yours was doing, actually.
>> Yeah. Same thing.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Just not turboed.
>> Same. Same. But same.
>> Wow.
>> I can't even like comprehend this.
>> Yeah. Power torque. Boy, hate to go right off the side of that.
This why this is a lot more fun in a manual.
Now we're climbing again.
And uh I've got it on the floor. You can see how fast we're going. off. We're pretty high up.
So, now we are at the very top.
Wow.
I really hope those brakes work on the way down. Here comes the scary part.
Going down. Probably not going to be able to film much of this because I don't have a GoPro and I'm going to probably want both hands. Got to say this is absolutely terrifying coming from someone who's afraid of heights. Oh my god. No guard rails, nothing. Just, you know, straddling the peak of this mountain.
Hey, look, it's Mortsky.
Heading down the mountain now. We uh just crossed the peak which was 9800 ft. So pretty high up here right now. The old Ford was struggling. I was trying to push the gas pedal through the floor and we were crawling uphill about 30 mph.
Low didn't make much difference either.
It helped taking off, but you know, once it gets high enough and you're not rejetted, low gear doesn't matter that much. So, yeah, just trying to take it easy going down. I'm kind of by myself now. So, We just stopped here. Beautiful scenery.
I think we're about 100 miles from Moab now. I'm going to just pop the hood and give this thing a little once over.
Guess I'll check the oil. I haven't put any in it since I bought it. So, >> quite a ways.
Oh yeah, it's fine. This thing has not used any oil since I bought it. That's crazy.
>> Maybe she's earned an oil change when we get to Moab, huh? Just like to point out this excellent hood gap we've got going on here. I put a lot of time into that.
>> All right. Well, I'm driving through the middle of Utah somewhere and I got split from the group.
So, a bunch of cars got between us, I guess, and I can't get caught back up. I don't have a radio. Don't have signal.
Um, yeah. So, I think I'm going to just try to find the the next town I come into. Hopefully, they've got some gas and stuff cuz I probably need to top off and maybe I can find a road map or something. Hopefully, I'm going the right way. There's a few fellas behind me that are with the group, but I don't know if they assume I know where I'm going cuz I don't. So, yeah. See where I end up, I guess.
I am not going to say how fast I went or how many people I had to pass, but I finally got caught back up with the group. So, I think we're getting close to Moab.
>> Well, made it to Moab.
It's pretty impressive. I'm kind of happy with this old fort.
I was here uh about three three and a half years ago. Uh of course I was in my truck at that time, my 77.
This is a pretty different experience in a 50s car, you know, an actual old car.
Pretty neat. Uh a couple miles from the hotel now, so going to go get checked in. All right, here we are.
I need aing beer. It's been a heck of a drive today. Good god, this place looks fancy. Morning from Moab. So, me and Steve over here, Steve has got a leaking tire, so they're trying to get that sorted out. I have got a CB radio that I'm going to try to slam in this car really quick that someone was nice enough to give me.
So, >> the antenna is not quite as extreme as the one on the Plymouth, but this might work for a little while.
How's it going with you, Steve? Oh, you know the same tire that [clears throat] has given us trouble.
>> Sure.
>> Is continuing to do so.
>> The sidewall is not good.
>> No, >> I mean it's out of air right now, but the ears are really special.
>> Yeah, >> pretty soft tire.
>> Yeah, >> it is. I mean, they're probably cheap junk, but no tire shops open today, and nobody in the group or on marketplace has anything even remotely close. So, kind of standard.
>> Perfect. Well, I'm going to go back to throwing this CB in real quick. CB radio is installed. So, not really crazy about it, but it'll work for now. I really don't like this antenna. Like to have a bigger one.
>> Should work better than no radio.
Steve's getting ready to go with me.
We're going to the meetup. Got his fender rolled on his car. More tire clearance. See how this fires up after sitting all night.
Okay.
>> Oh, come on.
Yeah, not bad. No choke or anything, so pretty good. You know, I'd think I'd get tired of the straight pipes, but I really don't. I'm sure you guys are, though. It's pretty loud. Makes it feel fast, though, you know, cuz it's so loud.
[music] >> It's really pretty out here.
just ran out of gas. Um, filled it up yesterday. Put about 100 miles on it and I guess I'm getting like 3 to 5 miles to the gallon.
>> So, I got to turn around and go back, fill up and catch up with these guys later.
>> Ah, yes. Fuel.
This thing must drank a ton of gas yesterday.
Well, we were traveling at a very high rate of speed.
Still though, all right, let's get this thing filled up. Back on the road. Filled up with gas. I guess this has a smaller tank than I thought. I thought it had more than a It's like a 15 gallon, I think, maybe. But, uh, yeah, now I got to go try to find everybody.
Wish me luck. We're climbing now.
It's going to be hard to get a run at it at these hills cuz this truck that's 50 years newer than my car apparently can only do 30 miles an hour. I can do double that on the flats up here at this elevation. But oh well.
She's lugging down pretty good. I'm just a few miles behind the rest of the guys.
It is floored right now. doing like 25 maybe. So I might pull off a vacuum line or something and create a little vacuum leak. Give me a little bit more air. So if it's running so rich, but about 2 miles away from the rest of the group.
>> Found them. Now we're leaving again.
>> There's cows in the road up there.
>> In the world, >> they can just free range up here. I guess it's kind of cool.
Got a orange GMC coming down.
>> This is where the drum brakes fail and I could die cuz I'm having to ride them all.
>> Funny looking deer keep yelling at us.
>> Seem to be working fine though, thankfully.
You know, you can't drop this in low when you're rolling at any kind of speed, so that's no help.
Well, I survived the descent. My camera was dead. That was a wild uh mountain road coming down with hairpin corners.
If I was going to die at any point in this trip, it probably would have been then, but brakes held on. I mainly just cruise down in low, but probably couldn't have filmed anyway. That would have been too dangerous. Try to hold the camera. Look at this beautiful view we got down here, guys. You really need to come out here and experience this for yourselves in an old car.
Sounds pretty good. Straight piped.
>> We can see quite a few over here.
This is the Colorado River.
>> Cars are all up there at the pulloff.
>> Is the water nice?
>> Kind of nice. Kind of cold, but yeah.
>> Well, just had a pretty good lunch. I think now at least most of us some of us might be going to Arches National Park since we're here depending on I guess it sounds like there could be like hours worth of waiting to get in there.
So I don't know how many of us are actually going to go.
Starts so nice, even hot.
Here we are just outside of Arches National Park. It's going to be really cool to go back here. I've I was in Moab three a little over three years ago. Uh took a college trip back when I was in college. Drove a bunch of old cars and stuff. I think I said that already.
Yeah, we came to came to Moab and drove through Arches. Pretty cool. If you're ever out here, I'd recommend checking it out.
Well, I don't know if you can see, I just got a sheriff pulled out behind me.
So this ain't good. Oh boy. Good. He swung around. He didn't want a piece of this Ford. He knew better.
Oh man. Well, heard everybody out here is drinking beer in the parking lot of the hotel. It's my birthday, so I think we're all kind of hanging out.
See if I can find him.
There's everybody.
All right. Good morning. Uh, partied hard last night. That's fine. Well, and had breakfast. You'll notice I'm not Well, you probably won't notice yet, but I'm not in Moab anymore. Uh, about 30 mi north of there. We are all loaded up.
Well, a small group of us are. Me, Steve, Jim, Canadian Steve are all headed headed toward home, which is going to well, my home, Steve's home.
Not other Steve's home. Um, we're headed toward Colorado now. I think we're going to take I7 all the way across. Ford is doing great. No complaints there so far.
It still has that lift or tick or whatever it is. I'm not worried about it. But I'm not going to do anything with it yet. Oil's clean. Um, checked all that over this morning. So, still runs fine. So, going to fill it up, grab some stuff, get back on the road.
We're back on the road now. Got like 5 hours to Denver and then we'll just see how far we get tonight.
I guess I get to be the pace car cuz I'm the one that would be most inclined to drive slow.
So, Here we go.
All right. Let's see if this is a little better audio. I got the clip on mic now.
It is so loud in this car. It is straight piped. Um, and it is just obnoxiously loud.
But we're running I don't know 70 80 down I 70 in Utah headed for Denver.
So far no trouble at all.
Everything seems to be going all right.
Oh, I'm gonna have to pass the semi here. Hold on.
Yeah. Listen to that 292.
This thing actually has some get up and go. It's not bad.
I don't know too. I kind of wanted to explain the transmission that we I never really went into detail about that.
So, we thought it was a 3-speed four automatic or whatever, but it could be a two-speed. I don't know. There's so much conflicting information on the internet.
I really need a book or something. You can't hardly even research anything anymore because of that stupid AI bull on Google and whatever. There's I tried there's an ID tag on the side of the transmission.
I tried looking that up. That absolutely meant nothing.
So, I don't know. It could be a two-speed. It could be a broken 3-speed.
It looks like kind of like the four automatic 3-speed, but kind of not.
Like, we couldn't we had trouble finding anything that even looked like it. So, I don't know if it's a two-speed or not.
It's got a cast case um and then an aluminum tail shaft.
I I I don't know. I'm not a Ford guy. I like Fords a lot, but this is my first 55 with an automatic. So, I don't I don't know anything about them. Probably is a broken 3-speed, but we're just going to call it a two-speed. And I don't know why you have to manually shift it. It's been out of the car and been apart. Evidently, it's it very clearly looks like it's been apart and possibly rebuilt. Like the engine, this engine was 100% rebuilt, but I don't know. Whatever. Just got to run with it. Hopefully this baby gets me home. If not, I will be taking a Greyhound bus. I am done. I'm not buying a third car.
That thing is fast.
Look.
Made it into Colorado.
Nice. Let's go.
Looks like we're pulling off in here to grab some fuel.
Good. I need to get out of this car. We shoot through about 120 30 miles, something like that. No, actually more than that, I think.
Oh, look who we found. Is that Dalton?
Of course, none of the pumps are open.
Well, other than being extremely hot and loud, we're doing just fine. This car is very comfortable. It handles okay. Kind of imagine floating around on an extremely loud and obnoxious couch that's very hot. That's how I would describe this ride.
>> Some kind of liquid just splashed off my windshield.
This is great. We're stopped here. It said for up to like 20 minutes. That dead stop didn't help anything. I got my foot to the floor. 30 is it.
I think we're like 9,000 ft right now.
So, the Ford is not jetted for this.
Well, I don't think I have to worry much about getting a ticket up here. An update. Uh it's about to uh start pouring, it looks like. And conveniently, I don't have any wipers.
So, that's great. On top of a mountain rain. Uh looks like we're about to start descending, too. So, yeehaw.
That was terrifying. However, I survived. Stopped here at the busiest gas station I think in the world and uh waiting my turn to get fuel. I think this is Eisenhower Pass that we're climbing right now. The car is hating it. I think we're going to climb all the way to 11,000 ft and then from there it's like straight out.
This is going to be a slow hill climb.
This 292 is just giving it all she's got right now.
Yeah, about 35 or 40 is it. And I know you're going to say, "Oh, why would you drop it down in low?" Well, cuz low is only good for up to about 25. So, I can put it in low, but I couldn't go any faster than I'm going now.
So, yeah, this is where we're at.
See, this is low gear. There's no difference. It's just louder. Yeah, there's the tunnel. Cool.
This is going to be really loud in the tunnel.
So, uh, going downhill is going to be pretty rough. So, uh, might not be able to film that. We'll see.
I've driven this before going the other way and it is terrifying.
And that was in a stick shift.
There we go.
Downhill grades next 44 miles. How are your brakes? Huh? I don't know. Made it down the mountain pretty much and decided to bypass Denver. Uh yeah, now we've got stop and go traffic.
Oh boy, this has been a pretty stressful day, but we're making it. Ford has no complaint. I have no complaints about this car yet. Finally got through the horrible traffic in Colorado. I had a near-death experience there. Well, many.
But the scariest thing that happened was um I had to get around a bunch of cars that wouldn't let me in to make an exit.
So, I matted it and did it and the throttle stuck wide open.
That was cool. Since then, we pulled off and got it fixed, but I've been having some issues with the throttle. Uh, what happened?
Well, the kick down link, the homemade [ __ ] kickown thing had come loose, and that's why the throttle got stuck all the way open, but I just pulled in here and noticed I didn't have hardly any gas pedal at all. That rod on the back of that pedal had come off and I and trying to move the car, >> push the pedal down and bent it. So, I just kind of bent it straighter a little bit and now kind of works again. It rubs on the floor a little bit, but that's better. Well, started to leave the gas station, get a little get back on the road to the hotel, and it looks like Canadian Steve is having trouble now. By the way, you should go check out his channel. It's called The Rust Farm. He's a really good standup guy.
All good?
>> Yeah. What happened?
>> I don't know. I think my needle is stick sometimes.
>> Oh, okay. Cool. All right, back to the road.
Putting the hammer down. Going about another 50 mi for the night and then stopping. So, ready to get out of this damn car.
Not good. The hood just folded up on me.
I was able to get it folded back over.
Look what it did to the hood and the roof.
That's terrible.
Well, I guess I'm keeping the car cuz I can't sell it.
I guess I'm keeping it for sure now cuz no one's going to buy it with this.
>> That's exciting.
>> Yeah. Very glad that didn't happen in traffic earlier.
Holy [ __ ] I can't believe it did that to the road.
>> Wa. Yeah. All right. Well, that's fixed.
Let's get to the hotel. There's significantly less headroom in here now for some reason.
Jeez, that sucks, man.
The hood I fixed the hood latch. It didn't even latch when I got the car and after we put it back on, I was able to get it to actually latch. So, I was not expecting that.
Well, this should give you an idea of the size of the winds we had.
That is uh probably why the hood blew up. You know, that might be an indicator. Anyway, swinging off into the hotel right now here in Leone, Colorado.
Oh, yeah. It'll be good to get out of the car.
All right, I'm going to go get checked in now.
That was a pretty just awful drive all the way around today. I am exhausted.
Have not eaten.
What do you think, Dalton?
>> I think it sucks.
>> It's really upsetting.
>> Oh no.
>> I don't care about the hood. It was screwed anyway. But the roof junk >> the roof. Oh, >> dude. It actually Did it just completely pop right back out?
>> It's pretty close. You got one can back here.
>> Yeah, but no, that completely >> It's not flexing or anything, though.
>> The front just complet >> right here.
>> Yeah, still I can live with that. Yeah, it's tolerable.
>> Is the headliner Oh, you even didn't punch through the headliner.
>> No, it's still good.
>> Okay.
>> Well, there you go. Car's fine.
>> So, now all I need is a hood for a 55 Ford. If you have one and want to deliver it for free, let me know.
It's the next morning and the car is still here. Damn it. Means I have to drive it home. Did you break something, Steve?
Oh [ __ ] What happened? going.
>> Well, I was checking my transmission oil and it kind of rolled back against that curb over there.
>> I pulled forward and it pulled my exhaust off.
>> Oh, no. [laughter] >> It was standing here dragging.
>> No, it just pulled the head clamp out of the muffler.
>> Oh, okay.
>> I should just be able just to crawl under it and slip it back together.
>> Sure. Sure.
>> Now it sounds kind of like your car.
>> Yeah. Straight pipes. I've got another hard 600 miles or so to go today.
Oh, yeah. All right. Put gas in this pig.
Okay, it's full. Now we've got about, you know, 600 miles of flat nothing.
So, can't wait. I love driving all the way across Kansas.
Here we go.
And here it is.
Paint it into the great state of Kansas.
I'm going to be in Kansas for like the next 8 hours. So, can't wait.
And it all is going to look just like this. You know, few trees, no hills, nothing.
And up here is Colby, Kansas. Kind of like in the John Denver song. You know, I think he talked about Kobe, Kansas once. Okay. Palm trees. Huh. That's odd in the middle of western Kansas, but you know, that's fine.
Well, I just tried to push the door open and evidently the door doesn't open anymore.
Um, >> cool.
>> The fender is a little loose on the >> Oh, yeah. On the car. Yes.
>> It's just missing the bottom.
>> Yeah. Yeah, it's just missing.
>> Oh, it's it's barely even on there.
>> Yeah. Yeah. [laughter] >> Perfect. Thank you for the fender adjustment.
>> Yeah.
>> All right. Well, we stopped for lunch.
I'm actually in Hayes, Kansas right now.
I think the plan is we're going to go going to take I7 on south to Salina maybe and then no we're going to take I7 on down to Salina and then probably go south from that point and try to not take I7 the entire way. It'd be kind of cool. So if anything happens uh we will see. I got the swamp cooler filled up and charged with water which won't do anything here probably cuz it's so humid.
It is very very hot and very uncomfortable. So I will take any relief I can get.
Okay.
All right. So, I am no longer on I70.
Uh, I'm actually sweating my ass off out here in the middle of road construction uh, south of Salina and north of McFersonen.
So, man, managed to find the only road construction, you know, wasn't on I7.
It's like I have a knack for that, you know, on a super hot day in an old car.
Um, I always find road construction.
though. But yeah, this is still less stressful than being on I70.
That was pretty intense.
I think it got a little windy.
All right, so I just passed through Gypsum, Kansas, which is a cool little town. This area is actually pretty cool.
I know I normally, you know, dog on Kansas. I lived here for two years. Um, didn't like it. But this area, Harington, Council Bluffs, Gypsum, is definitely a very pretty area. Now, the problem is I screwed up. I did not get fuel while I was in Salina, and I should have. Uh, there's no fuel in Gypsum, it didn't look like. So, the next closest gas station is in Hope, and that's about 20 mi away. Um, I don't have a working gas gauge. I know my range is about a 100 miles and I believe I have already done well over a 100 miles. So, uh, yeah, 20 miles is the nearest station.
So, we're going to be cutting it real close.
A thought I found gas, but I guess it's closed. Okay, keep going. Another nine miles. Oh, look, a gas station. Oh gosh, are those pumps open?
That's really cool if they are, but Huh.
That looks like it. All right. I don't even know. Huh. I have not seen a gas station with pumps that look like this in forever.
>> What do you guys think of this?
Well, I haven't seen one of these in a really long time. [laughter] >> Beats the interstate, huh?
>> Oh, the drive's so much better.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh my gosh.
>> Oh, look at that. Boy, 12 gallons.
She was almost empty. It's only a 15 gallon tank.
>> There we go. 13. Yeah, we would have made it much further.
[laughter] Now, this place is cool. They still got the old pumps. I was in there.
Some old lady was cutting a check to pay for fuel. And uh they don't even have barcodes in there. They've got prices on each individual thing that the lady at the register has to punch in. My kind of gas station. Time to get back on the road.
Oh, come on.
There we go.
We're in the little town of Council Grove, Kansas. This is one of the neatest old towns.
All the old buildings and houses.
I always like it when I get to drive through here.
you know, just idling around.
This thing has kind of a miss or a stumble or something. Uh, we're going to just hope it has nothing to do with the lifter tick. I do need to lash the valves. I'm sure that they were probably never re, you know, hotlashed or anything after the engine was put together. Um, so I need to do that. And there may be a vacuum plug that I, you know, sort of neglected to put back on after climbing the mountain. But, uh, yeah, but or it could just be, you know, a massive cam. Kind of what it sounds like when it's idling around. I don't know. Or a plug wire or something fell off. But I am so close to home now. time within like an hour and a half or something. So, I don't really want to even open the hood and look at anything.
I just want to get home. I am exhausted and I've been on the road for over a week straight now. So, anyway, just cannonball on Ottawa, Kansas.
Getting close. Just rolled in here.
We're going to get fuel. This thing is idling terribly. It was loping so hard.
It sounds like it has a massive cam. I think the guy in the Mustang over there was a little intimidated when I pulled up. Oh, yeah. You can't get out anymore.
>> Stupid fender.
>> Yeah, I think the We're definitely missing some more bolts from that fender.
>> Oh well.
All right, last stop almost. I might have to stop and get some cigarettes somewhere. I am dangerously low. I have only got like two.
Not good. Not good at all. And these are hard to find. And I I'm only getting those cuz the lies are even harder to find.
>> Anyway, I just wanted to address something real quick.
>> What?
>> I hope you're talking to the camera.
>> Yeah.
>> No, I'm filming right now, actually.
Steve's over there making fun of me cuz I'm filming right now.
Jeez.
No. Um, finally found a decent place to set the camera. This car is terrible.
Like, there's nowhere to set a camera up to really film me. So, it's been very difficult. Hopefully, this video is not too hard to watch because of that.
But, uh I don't know. I'm gonna have to build some kind of camera mount or something to be able to or something to be able to but going to have to build some kind of custom camera mount or something for these cars cuz like this one there's no dash or anything to set it on. So, I apologize about a few of the scenes, you know, probably being difficult to watch in this video. easiest solution would just be to find a co-pilot, but uh you know, more likely than I'm going to have to build something. Anyway, let's uh let's get home. I really just want to get home.
Finally, I have come to acquire all of your unfiltered cigarettes.
Target acquired.
Well, I am home and the grass is significantly taller.
Great.
I want the hell out of this car right now.
I had a few Canadians follow me, too.
And there goes Canadian Steve.
He's going on about a another hour or so tonight. And they got to be in St. Louis in the morning. They're going to go do a power tour as well. So much tougher than me.
It's the next morning as you can see.
And of course, it's already windy and raining again. So, it's great. Perfect weather for this stuff. Well, it has been a blast. Thank you guys so much for watching this video. I really appreciate it. It has been absolutely incredible to get to meet and interact with a bunch of you guys. Made some great friends. It's it's just been truly it's like it's beyond words uh how incredible it is to actually see the people that have supported me and made this kind of thing possible. So, I thank you very much. Uh, thank you to everybody that helped me with my cars when they were broken, which was often, especially that poor Plymouth, which I'm going to have to go back to New Mexico to get and kind of redo a will it run and drive home again on that because I'm going to have to go down there with an engine and transmission, which I have, and get it running and drive it 1,000 miles back home.
So, keep an eye out for that. That will be coming out in a few months. And as far as what I'm going to do with the black 55 Ford, um, I'm going to put a hood on it. I'm going to lash the valves, change the oil, and drive it because I lost my main daily driver, which was the Plymouth Fury. So, this car has got big shoes to fill. Um, I think it's capable of it. So, thank you so much for watching. Please like, subscribe, hype, all that good stuff.
helps me out a lot and I will catch you in the next
