This documentary powerfully illustrates how systemic poverty and neurobiology collide to trap the vulnerable in a cycle of chemical escape. It is a sobering reminder that addiction is often a physiological response to an unlivable social reality.

Every day, videos circulate online, people overdosing, some knowingly, others completely unaware of what they've taken. What was once seen as a distant problem has now spread into places you wouldn't even expect.
Today I am going into the inner streets of Aeda, Lagos, away from the main roads into the quieter parts of the city areas to meet the people and understand how activities like this continues to grow.

Hearing about IA, one would hardly expect to see a place like this. A place filled with people whose dreams have slowly been isolated, abandoned, and left to languish.
>> Behind these walls are people battling more than addiction. They are fighting hopelessness, trauma, poverty, and ash weight of survival. Colin adviser to change glory bring her to change glory to people.

Drug addiction is a very tricky type of addiction. At first, it feels like something you just take to temporarily make yourself happy. But over time, it begins to change how the brain works.
Most addictive cause a massive release of dopamine. As time goes on, the brain begins to treat the as one of the most important things for survival. The cravings become stronger than normal decision making. Some people become willing to do almost anything just to survive the addiction. For a few hours, the problems disappear. Confidence rises. Pain feels distance. After a short while, reality returns, often worse than before, creating a painful circle. And so, they go back to it again and again.
I do stop. I do come back. If I said that I want to stop, I will stop. If I said I don't want to, I won't.
>> It's a decision. That means you don't want to stop.
>> I want to stop now. I've stopped. I've come back. It's something you cannot just like just stop. Just just stop like that.
>> Why? Like that. Even though you went to rehabilitation, you still continue.
>> Would you want to go to rehab?
>> I don't want to. And I will not.
>> My house is my rehab.
>> Why? Why? Why do you think so?
>> Cuz if I go there, I will still come back here. So there's no excess of going to the rehab. You know when you've not found not you don't know if you are going to be rehabilitated if you go to rehab.
>> Yeah I don't chill out on my own. I never been to rehab rehabilitation or something. I chill out on my own on the norms.
>> Are you sober now?
>> I'm just in back now.
>> Do you ever plan on stopping?
>> Definitely.
>> What do you think is going to register?
>> Um if I decide actually I can decide right now that to stop but I can I stayed like 3 years when I travel to Ghana.
Say if you take one if you if you buy 500 if you take you take 30 minutes 40 minutes time for your eye if you don't get money if you get money you must buy some for 1 hour if you know you be smoke if you born almost like born 3k born 4k born 5k that's per hour like 3 hours so you understand so it come depends as you say they okay with But now that one head up and down head up and down game at all game like this but thank God you take come across say I regret my life I don't even pray for my smo make me smoke me as an artist I don't even want my Now go for you to say you don't understand it's more so you believe and you as a man give you no try at all cuz if you try for that first day you be control yourself if you don't come out again I take I want this one addiction does not only destroy the It slowly disconnects people from their dreams, families, and even themselves.
In a country where making ends meet has become a daily struggle, many people turn to temporary comfort just to forget the ash reality.
>> I want to be a pilot.
>> Come make you become pilots.
>> Say far, please go far. Please go far.
No bad. No anything. Nothing to carry on.
Every addict has a story that many people never gets to hear. A story of pain, loss, pressure, trauma, or simply the desperate need to escape reality.
>> The thing that happened to me before, I will never forget in my life. E my Py, I don't go forget for my life.
>> You mean the pain?
>> Yes.
>> Do you have any regrets?
>> Getting pregnant for my baby father.
That's the worst thing I regret ever.
He's an irresponsible man. Sorry to say.
Wherever he is, let him know he's an irresponsible.
>> You've not seen him since then?
>> Yeah.
>> At what age were you?
>> 18 years.
>> 18 years.
>> That means your child is 12 years old now.
>> Yes. I gave birth to twins, two boys.
That was my parents at Badagu.
>> Sometimes inside the pain are people who once had ambitions, families, talents and futures they genuinely believed in.
So message people don't know about understand the matter you never chop you never chop before they say take you know it must you chop her must even feel from feeling some people if you live until take their life you understand smoke go back just for that >> everything Am I anybody want you say me God escape me I know how many I know how many I want me I just thank God I know how many count one die one of the one way they don't die like on the period because with the eye of the period don't see god and the parent is not they see the future.
>> It's kind of listen to their parents.
They should don't follow bad friends cuz bad that lead me to what I'm into now.
That's what I can just say to them.
>> The real question is not only how they got here, but whether society is willing to help them find a way back. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe while I see you on the next one.
Goodbye.
