[00:00:18]So today we're talking about something that everyone who's ever lived away from home has felt before. Right, and that's the word we're going to preview today.

[00:00:25]The word is homesick.

[00:00:27]>> All right, so let's take a look at that in today's language preview.

[00:00:30]Vocabulary preview.

[00:00:33]All right, so homesick, if you feel homesick or you are homesick. Well, yeah, you you could say, "I'm homesick right now." Or, "Are you feeling homesick?"

[00:00:43]Um so it's a word that means I miss my home, I miss my family, I'm far away, or I haven't seen my family in a long time, and for some reason you just feel sad.

[00:00:54]>> Mhm. Okay, so it's a it's a feeling. You feel a little bit depressed, you feel sad because you're homesick.

[00:00:59]>> Right. Okay, so this is what's happening today in our dialogue. So let's listen to it for the first time. [music] Tom, how are you? Hey, we missed you at the party last night. Are you okay?

[00:01:17]I don't know. I didn't really feel like going out. I guess I'm feeling a little homesick. Come on. We've been through this already. Look, I know the adjustment was hard when you first got here, but we agreed that you're going to try and deal with it.

[00:01:31]I was. It's just that the holidays are coming up and I won't be able to go home because I can't afford the airfare.

[00:01:38]I'm just longing for some of the comforts of home, like my mom's cooking and being around my family.

[00:01:44]Yeah, it can get pretty lonely over the holidays. When I first got here, I'd get depressed and nostalgic for anything that reminded me of home. I almost let it get to me, but then I started going out, keeping myself busy, and before I knew it, I was used to it.

[00:01:58]I see what you mean, but I'm still bummed out. Okay, how does this sound?

[00:02:04]Let's get you suited up and hit the dance club tonight. I hear that an awesome DJ is playing, and there will be a lot of pretty single girls there.

[00:02:12]You know, I could really go for that.

[00:02:15]You don't mind being my wingman for tonight? Not at all. It'll be fun. It will be like a boys' night out. Well, kind of.

[00:02:24]>> [music] >> Great. I must warn you, though, whatever happens, don't let me go on a drinking binge. Trust me, it's not a pretty picture.

[00:02:37]>> [music] >> Alrighty, we're back. So, yeah, I guess he's very homesick. Very homesick, and his friend is really worried. Yeah, uh but actually, I think this is common, right? To be homesick during the holidays, like Christmas, for example.

[00:02:49]>> Oh, man, it's the worst during the holidays because you think of all the traditions and all the things that you normally do at home, and you're not doing them. Mhm. So, this is something we're going to talk more about a little bit later on, but uh let's take a look at some of the language that was used in language takeaway.

[00:03:07]Language takeaway.

[00:03:09]This first one is key, right? So, when you move away from home, or when you move to a new place, you have a period of adjustment. So, adjustment is kind of finding the right balance, or doing something so that you can kind of feel comfortable. Okay, so you have to adjust to your new life, life away from home.

[00:03:28]Or your new environment. So, many times people say, "Wow, moving to China must be a big adjustment." So, it means there's so many differences that it must take a long time to feel comfortable again. Mhm, okay. All right, so that's adjustment. Uh what else do we have?

[00:03:43]Well, we've got this next phrase that's uh that's really important, I think, but often gets overlooked. We say the comforts of home, right?

[00:03:50]>> Comforts of home. So, comfort's easy, right? Feeling comfortable. So, you have comfort, but the comforts are of home are things that are different with every person. But, uh those are things that you have at your home or your childhood home or your parents home that make you feel good and feel happy. So, they're not only physical things or or objects, right? They can be like your mom's cooking or maybe even just spending time with your family. Right, or reading the newspaper with your dad or things that you're you're used to that you don't have anymore. And so, those are the comforts of home. I could say, "Marco, do you miss the comforts of home in Ecuador?" I mean, do you have anything that's really Of course, of course. I think one of the main things is actually not living in the city cuz I used to live in the valley a little bit further away and kind of almost countryside, so.

[00:04:35]That's one of the comforts of home that I miss.

[00:04:36]>> Aw.

[00:04:37]You're making me nostalgic and I've never even been.

[00:04:40]All right. Well, this is our next word, actually. Right, nostalgic.

[00:04:43]>> Nostalgic. It's a feeling. I'm feeling nostalgic or he's just really nostalgic.

[00:04:47]>> Mhm. And so, to be nostalgic is to kind of think about a time before or, you know, think positively about something that you experienced before. So, it's not usually a bad thing. It's never bad thing. It's nostalgia is a good, warm, fond memory of something.

[00:05:02]>> Of something from your past. So, you start thinking of something from your past that maybe brings a nice, warm feelings. Maybe a little bit sad because you miss those times, but it's usually thinking about the past. All right. So, I have nostalgia for my childhood. I loved, you know, summers in Chicago and it was hot and the kids would play in the sprinkler and I had my dog and, you know, it you just it's a happy feeling.

[00:05:26]>> Right. So, nostalgia would be the noun and nostalgic would be the adjective.

[00:05:29]>> Exactly. All right. And our last word for today on Language Takeaway is bummed out. Bummed out. Okay.

[00:05:37]>> out.

[00:05:38]>> another feeling here. So, we're all full of feelings today. Bummed out is a sad feeling. So, to be bummed is It's of slang and it means to be sad.

[00:05:47]>> Mhm. Okay, or disappointed.

[00:05:49]>> Disappointed. So, you you come into the office, Marco, and you look a little tired. I say, "Are you okay? Are you bummed out about something?"

[00:05:55]>> Mhm. I can say, "Yeah, I lost my wallet last night, so I'm really bummed out."

[00:06:00]Aw. Or something like that. So, yeah, you feel bummed out when something bad or sad happens to you.

[00:06:05]>> Right. Mhm. All right, so why don't we move on now to a couple of different phrases on Fluency Builder.

[00:06:13]Fluency Builder.

[00:06:15]All right, this first one is something that you often say to old friends or family. You know, when you're friends with someone, they go through periods of happiness and sadness. And so, when someone's going through a down period again, you say, "Ah, we've been through this already."

[00:06:28]>> We've been through this already. Or, you know, when you're giving someone advice and they never take your advice, you say, "Listen, we've been through this already. You should know by now that I and then, you know, whatever the advice is."

[00:06:39]>> has happened before, or we have experienced this before, or we already solved this problem or situation. Right.

[00:06:46]>> Right. You could imagine two bank robbers who are going over their plan for the 10th time. And then, the one says to the other, "Hey, we've been through this already. You should know the plan by now."

[00:06:55]>> Exactly. All right, so we've been through this already. Um they're were talking about the adjustments and everything. And then, what other phrase did they use? Well, the next couple of phrases have to do with the friend's suggestions, because she has a lot of ideas to to cheer her friend up, the the depressed one. And the first thing she says is, "Hey, let's hit the dance club." Okay, let's hit the dance club, or let's hit the dance floor tonight.

[00:07:19]All right, so hit in this case doesn't mean like hit. It doesn't mean you're punching someone. It means to go to or to do. All right, so we can say, "Let's go to the dance club tonight. Let's hit the dance club." Exactly. It doesn't have to be a dance club, but let's hit that concert tonight. Yeah, I really want to go there.

[00:07:34]>> Okay, so you can hit pretty much any place, right?

[00:07:37]>> Mhm, exactly. And then, this is a very kind of spoken language, so you wouldn't say this in your essays, but it's a good way to to talk about plans with friends.

[00:07:46]All right. And our next word actually is kind of interesting because it's very colloquial and it's a wingman.

[00:07:53]I can be your wingman tonight. So, wingman, you have to think about wing meaning side, not like a bird's wing.

[00:07:59]So, a wing means side and a wingman is a guy who will go [music] with you to a bar or a club to kind of help you find a date or a girl or someone to talk to.

[00:08:12]>> Okay. So, this person, this wingman, usually keeps you company and helps you decide maybe what girl to talk to or maybe even introduces you to someone.

[00:08:21]Right.

[00:08:22]>> At a club or at a restaurant or bar or whatever. [music] And you know, the key is that people don't like to go alone to bars, right? Because you feel sad and then you're you look weird cuz you're all alone. And the same is true for girls. Uh-huh. And so, if a guy wants to go to a bar and he sees two girls, well, he has to have a friend to talk to the other girl. Right. Right.

[00:08:38]>> So, a wingman also helps in that sense.

[00:08:40]He helps balance things. All right. So, there's a whole science behind the wingman.

[00:08:45]>> I'm sure if you look it up on Wikipedia, you'll find 10 pages of information. All right. So, since they are going out tonight, they said it could be boys night out. Okay. So, this is another phrase you hear all the time, especially among young people. Boys night out and girls night out. And so, you know, sometimes you spend a lot of time with your husband or your wife or your boyfriend or your girlfriend and you just want to have some time with your friends.

[00:09:07]>> Right. And so, you call this girls night for me, girls night out. You just go out and you do girl things. Guys night out, you do other things. Okay. And so, in this case, >> only or guys only. Boys night out is only guys. Exactly. And that's why this is funny because it's the girl who says, "Hey, let's have boys night out." And she isn't really a boy.

[00:09:24]>> [laughter] >> All right. Great. And well, he agreed to go out and everything, but he warned her about him going on a drinking binge.

[00:09:33]Okay. Now, this is important. A lot of people who who who are depressed or sad, when they drink, they drink a lot. And so, binge means to do something in excess, to do it [music] too much.

[00:09:42]>> Okay. So, a drinking binge would be drinking alcohol in excess, too much.

[00:09:47]>> Too much. So, getting drunk right away.

[00:09:49]And it's not healthy, and we do not condone [laughter] it. No. Right.

[00:09:52]Exactly. Very good. So, some very interesting phrases in this dialogue today.

[00:09:57]I think we should listen to it one more time and we'll be right back.

[00:11:36]>> All right, we're back. So, speaking of homesick [music] and holidays, do you actually get very depressed or homesick during Christmas?

[00:11:42]I do.

[00:11:44]Well, my family has a lot of Christmas traditions that are just really kind of wonderful and we do them every single year. And so, the first time I spent Christmas away, I was I was living in Italy and it was kind of similar, but then the second time was when I was living in China. And China was just not the same. No oven, so no Christmas cookies. And no granny who, you know, pours vodka and eats meatballs and like my mom not running around the kitchen.

[00:12:08]It You just You feel lonely and then all of a sudden you get a phone call. And it's the entire family and they're all together eating, having an amazing Christmas and they think it's going to help you feel less homesick, but it makes you feel more homesick, so.

[00:12:21]You definitely have have nostalgia for those days during the holidays. But, what about you? Um I rarely get homesick, but yeah, sometimes during Christmas or New Year's. Um New Year's we usually have more unique traditions in Ecuador. So, it's very fun. The family gets together, we dance, we we eat. So, um but yeah, I've been away from home so long that I rarely get homesick anymore. But, it's great to go back and spend time with the family, so after my visit to Ecuador then I might get homesick for a little while, but then it goes away. Yeah.

[00:12:53]>> [laughter] >> Well, you guys should tell us, do you ever feel homesick? And if you do, what do you feel homesick about? What do you miss? Maybe mom's cooking, maybe family, maybe the comforts of home. Mhm.

[00:13:09]Today, we are going to talk about something very important.

[00:13:15]Something that is silently stopping your English growth.

[00:13:19]Many people believe that their English is weak because they don't know enough vocabulary or because their grammar is not strong.

[00:13:28]But the truth is very different.

[00:13:30]The real problem is not your vocabulary.

[00:13:33]The real problem is not your grammar.

[00:13:36]The real problem is your thinking process.

[00:13:41]Every time you try to speak English, you first think in your own language.

[00:13:46]Then you translate.

[00:13:48]Then you try to speak. And in this process, you lose speed. You lose confidence, and you lose the moment.

[00:13:57]That is why even after learning English for months or years, you still feel stuck.

[00:14:05]You understand English, but you cannot speak it naturally.

[00:14:09]You know words, but they don't come out at the right time.

[00:14:14]And slowly, you start believing that English is difficult.

[00:14:20]But today, you are going to change that belief.

[00:14:24]Because in this video, you will learn how to stop translating and start thinking directly in English.

[00:14:31]And once your thinking changes, your speaking will automatically change.

[00:14:37]Step one.

[00:14:38]Kill the habit of mental translation.

[00:14:42]Listen carefully.

[00:14:43]This is the biggest mistake almost every English learner makes.

[00:14:47]You are not speaking English. You are converting your language into English.

[00:14:53]And conversion always takes time.

[00:14:56]Imagine the situation.

[00:14:57]You want to say something very simple like I am tired.

[00:15:02]But what happens inside your mind?

[00:15:04]First, you think the sentence in your own language.

[00:15:08]Then, you search for English words.

[00:15:12]Then, you try to arrange those words into a sentence.

[00:15:16]Then, you doubt if it is correct or not.

[00:15:20]And by the time you are ready, the conversation has already moved on.

[00:15:25]This is why you feel slow. This is why you feel nervous. This is why you stay silent.

[00:15:32]Now, understand this clearly.

[00:15:34]Fluent English speakers do not translate.

[00:15:38]They think and they speak.

[00:15:41]Their brain does not go through a long process.

[00:15:45]Their brain directly connects thoughts with English words.

[00:15:49]But your brain is trained in a different way.

[00:15:52]Your brain is trained to think in your language first.

[00:15:56]So, your first job is not to learn more English.

[00:16:00]Your first job is to change how your brain works.

[00:16:04]You need to break this habit of translation.

[00:16:08]And how do you do that?

[00:16:10]By creating a direct connection between what you see, feel, and think.

[00:16:16]And English words.

[00:16:18]Let's take a simple example. You see your phone.

[00:16:22]Instead of thinking in your language and then translating, you directly say in your mind, "This is my phone."

[00:16:29]You see water.

[00:16:31]Don't translate anything. Just think, "I need water."

[00:16:35]You feel hungry. Don't think in your language. Just say, "I am hungry."

[00:16:41]At first, it will feel strange. Your brain will try to go back to your old habit. It will try to force you to think in your language, but you have to control it. You have to train it again.

[00:16:54]Think about a child. When a child learns a language, the child does not translate. The child sees things, feels emotions, and directly connects them with words.

[00:17:07]That is why a child becomes natural.

[00:17:10]You need to follow the same process. Not by becoming a child, but by thinking like a child. Simple.

[00:17:17]Direct.

[00:17:19]Natural.

[00:17:20]Now, let's talk about daily practice.

[00:17:22]From today, start your morning in English. When you wake up, don't think in your language.

[00:17:28]Say in your mind, "I am waking up."

[00:17:32]When you go to the bathroom, say, "I am brushing my teeth."

[00:17:36]When you feel sleepy, say, "I feel sleepy."

[00:17:40]These are small sentences, but they are very powerful.

[00:17:45]Because you are building a new habit.

[00:17:47]A habit where your brain starts thinking in English without translation.

[00:17:52]And slowly, day by day, your brain will understand that English is not something to convert.

[00:18:00]English is something to think.

[00:18:03]Step two.

[00:18:05]Train your brain with simple thinking.

[00:18:08]Now, there is another mistake that many learners make.

[00:18:12]When they try to think in English, they try to create big, perfect, complex sentences.

[00:18:18]And because of that, they fail.

[00:18:22]Then they feel that thinking in English is very difficult.

[00:18:26]But the problem is not English.

[00:18:29]The problem is your approach.

[00:18:31]You are trying to run before you can walk.

[00:18:34]Fluency does not start with big sentences.

[00:18:37]Fluency starts with small, simple thoughts.

[00:18:40]Very small, very easy, very natural.

[00:18:44]Think about how a child speaks.

[00:18:47]A child does not use difficult vocabulary.

[00:18:50]A child uses simple words. A child says, "I am happy." A child says, "I am tired."

[00:18:57]A child says, "I want food."

[00:19:00]Simple sentences, but very clear, very fast, very natural. This is the secret you need to understand.

[00:19:08]Fluency is not about using big words.

[00:19:12]Fluency is about thinking fast.

[00:19:15]And fast thinking comes from simple thinking.

[00:19:19]Let's take a real example.

[00:19:21]You are walking outside.

[00:19:23]Instead of thinking a long sentence like, "Today, the weather is very pleasant and comfortable."

[00:19:29]Just think, "Nice weather."

[00:19:32]You are eating food. Don't create a long sentence. Just think, "This is tasty."

[00:19:38]If the food is not good, think, "I don't like this."

[00:19:42]You are sitting in your room.

[00:19:44]Think, "I am sitting.

[00:19:47]This is my room.

[00:19:49]I feel relaxed.

[00:19:51]These are very small thoughts, but they are very powerful for your brain, because they remove pressure.

[00:19:58]They make thinking easy.

[00:20:00]They make your brain faster.

[00:20:03]And when your brain becomes faster, your speaking becomes smoother.

[00:20:08]Now, here is a simple exercise you must start today.

[00:20:11]Look around you.

[00:20:13]Whatever you see, describe it in your mind in English.

[00:20:17]"This is a table.

[00:20:19]This is a chair.

[00:20:20]I am standing.

[00:20:22]I am walking."

[00:20:24]Do not worry about grammar. Do not worry about perfection. Focus only on thinking.

[00:20:29]At first, you will feel slow. You may stop in between. You may not find words.

[00:20:36]But that is normal. That is part of the process.

[00:20:39]Because you are training your brain in a new way.

[00:20:42]And with practice, your brain will adapt.

[00:20:46]Slowly, your thoughts will become faster.

[00:20:50]Your sentences will become natural.

[00:20:52]And one day, without even realizing, you will start thinking in English automatically.

[00:21:01]That is the moment when real fluency begins.

[00:21:06]Because now, you are not translating.

[00:21:10]You are thinking. Step three, create an English environment inside your mind.

[00:21:18]Now listen carefully.

[00:21:20]If you really want to think in English, you must understand one powerful truth.

[00:21:27]Your brain learns from what it hears, what it sees, and what it repeats again and again.

[00:21:34]If your daily life is full of your native language, your brain will naturally think in that language.

[00:21:41]So, the question is not just "How do I think in English?"

[00:21:46]The real question is "How do I surround my brain with English even when I am alone?"

[00:21:54]Because here is the truth most people ignore.

[00:21:58]You don't need to travel to another country to create an English environment. You can build it inside your mind.

[00:22:05]And this step will change everything.

[00:22:09]First, you need to start filling your day with English input, but not random input, not difficult content, not fast content that you don't understand.

[00:22:21]You need simple, clear, understandable English.

[00:22:25]When you listen to English that you understand, your brain starts recognizing patterns.

[00:22:31]It starts understanding how sentences are formed, how words connect, how ideas flow naturally.

[00:22:39]And slowly, without effort, your brain begins to copy it.

[00:22:45]That is how thinking in English starts.

[00:22:48]Now imagine this situation.

[00:22:51]You wake up in the morning, and instead of silence or random thoughts, you play simple English audio.

[00:22:58]It can be a conversation, a short story, a simple explanation You don't need to understand every word.

[00:23:06]Just listen.

[00:23:08]Let your brain absorb the sound, the rhythm, the flow.

[00:23:12]At first it will feel like noise, but slowly your brain will start catching words.

[00:23:18]Then phrases, then full ideas.

[00:23:22]And one day you will notice something surprising.

[00:23:26]Your mind will start repeating those sentences automatically.

[00:23:31]That is the beginning of thinking in English.

[00:23:35]Now, let's go deeper.

[00:23:37]Listening alone is not enough.

[00:23:39]You must interact with English in your mind.

[00:23:42]This is where most learners stop.

[00:23:44]They listen but they don't think. They watch but they don't respond.

[00:23:51]And because of that their brain stays passive.

[00:23:55]You need to activate your brain.

[00:23:57]You need to make it work.

[00:23:59]Here is a powerful method. When you hear a sentence pause for a moment and ask yourself "What does this mean?"

[00:24:08]Then answer in simple English.

[00:24:11]For example you hear "I'm going to the market."

[00:24:15]In your mind you say "He is going out."

[00:24:19]"He will buy something."

[00:24:21]Even if your answer is not perfect it does not matter.

[00:24:25]What matters is you are thinking in English.

[00:24:29]You are processing ideas in English. You are training your brain to stay inside English.

[00:24:36]Now, let's talk about your daily life.

[00:24:39]Your life is full of small moments.

[00:24:42]Walking, sitting, eating, waiting.

[00:24:46]Most people waste these moments in silence or random thinking.

[00:24:50]But you can use these moments to build your English environment.

[00:24:55]When you are walking describe what you see.

[00:24:58]The road is busy.

[00:25:00]I see many people.

[00:25:02]That car is fast.

[00:25:03]When you are waiting, talk to yourself.

[00:25:06]I am waiting.

[00:25:08]This is taking time.

[00:25:10]I feel bored.

[00:25:12]When you are eating, think about your food.

[00:25:15]This is hot.

[00:25:16]This tastes good.

[00:25:18]I like this.

[00:25:20]These are very simple sentences, but they are extremely powerful.

[00:25:25]Because now, your entire day becomes English practice.

[00:25:30]You are not waiting for a class.

[00:25:32]You are not waiting for a teacher. You are creating your own environment.

[00:25:37]Now, understand one deep truth.

[00:25:40]Your brain does not care about perfection. Your brain cares about repetition.

[00:25:46]Whatever you repeat again and again, your brain accepts it as normal.

[00:25:52]So, if you repeat English thinking every day, slowly, your brain will stop resisting.

[00:25:59]It will stop going back to your native language.

[00:26:03]And it will start choosing English automatically.

[00:26:07]At the beginning, it will feel uncomfortable. You may feel slow. You may feel confused. Sometimes, you may even feel tired. But that's a good sign.

[00:26:19]It means your brain is working in a new way. It means you are growing.

[00:26:24]And then, one day, something very powerful will happen. You will not even notice it at first.

[00:26:31]But suddenly, you will think a sentence in English without trying.

[00:26:36]No translation, no effort, just a direct thought. And in that moment, you will realize you are no longer learning English.

[00:26:48]You are starting to live in English.

[00:26:51]This is the power of creating an English environment inside your mind, not outside, inside.

[00:26:58]And once your mind changes, your speaking will follow naturally.

[00:27:05]Step four, speak your thoughts out loud every day.

[00:27:09]Now listen very carefully.

[00:27:11]Thinking in English is powerful, but if you stop only at thinking, your progress will stay incomplete because real fluency comes when your thoughts become voice.

[00:27:23]Many learners think in English a little, but when they try to speak, they freeze.

[00:27:29]Why?

[00:27:30]Because their brain is trained, but their mouth is not trained.

[00:27:36]And this is the truth you must accept.

[00:27:39]Your brain and your mouth are two different systems.

[00:27:43]Your brain can understand.

[00:27:45]Your brain can think, but your mouth needs practice to move, to form sounds, to speak smoothly.

[00:27:53]So, if you want to stop translating completely, you must start speaking your thoughts out loud.

[00:28:00]Not sometimes, every day.

[00:28:03]Now, let's understand the biggest fear.

[00:28:06]Most people say, "I feel shy.

[00:28:09]I feel scared.

[00:28:11]I don't have anyone to speak with."

[00:28:15]But listen carefully.

[00:28:17]You do not need another person to start speaking.

[00:28:21]You need yourself because the goal is not conversation first.
