In the Gospel of John, Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit as an 'advocate' (paraclete), a term derived from the Greek word meaning 'called alongside'—originally a legal term for a defense attorney. This metaphor reflects the early Christian community's experience of facing persecution and false accusations, where the Holy Spirit serves as a divine defense attorney, guiding and protecting believers in their witness to the faith.

>> A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed the Christ to them. With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by Philillip when they heard it and saw the signs he was doing.
For unclean spirits crying out in a loud voice came out of many possessed people, and many paralyzed or crippled people were cured. There was joy in that city.
Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. for it had not yet been fallen upon any of them. They had only been baptized in the name of Lord Jesus Christ.
Then they laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Cry out with joy to God all the earth to sing to the glory of his name.
render him glorious praise.
Say to God, how wonderous your deeds.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Before you all the earth shall bow down shall sing to you, sing to your name.
Come and see the works of God, his wondrous deeds among the children of Adam.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
He turned the sea into dry land.
They pass through the river unfold.
Let our joy be in him.
He rules forever by his might.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Come and hear all who fear God.
I will tell what he did for my soul.
Blessed be God who did not reject my prayer nor withhold from me his merciful love.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
A reading from the first letter of St. Peter. Beloved, sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope. But do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be for the will of God, than for doing evil.
For Christ who suffered for sins once, the righteousness for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit.

>> A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.
>> Glory to you, Lord.
Jesus said to his disciples, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments, and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him because he remains with you and will be in you.
I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.
In a little while, the world will no longer see me, but you will see me because I live and you will live.
On that day, you will realize that I am in my father and you are in me and I in you.
Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my father and I will love him and reveal myself to him.
The gospel of the Lord.

As we get closer to the celebration of Pentecost in just two weeks, our readings today start to direct our focus to the work of the Holy Spirit. So in the gospel Jesus tells disciples that he will ask God the father uh to send to them an advocate to be with them always.
This advocate is the spirit of truth.
Excuse me. My allergies are bothering me quite a lot this morning. It's interesting uh that that word advocate is used to describe uh the Holy Spirit.
The original Greek word used here is the word paracletos and it's where we get the term uh pariclete from. Right? One of the names that we give the Holy Spirit. Class means called and per means alongside.
And so when a person was accused of a crime, they had a right to call someone to help them. the paracleas. A paracletos they're literally a paricle is someone called alongside particularly uh someone to help you in a legal case right uh in other words a defense attorney Latin translation is advocatus uh vocadus as we know means called where we get our word vocation uh and ad means alongside and of course our English word is advocate notice this is legal language and that's no accident.
Commentators assert that the whole gospel of John uh is framed as kind of a trial of Jesus, right? Jesus is on trial uh by the Jewish religious establishment and he often uh has to uh defend himself against against them. God also uses legal vocabulary because the community for whom uh this gospel was written uh had to defend themselves before synagogue officials.
Evidence suggests that uh those Jews who had converted, those Jews who believed uh in Jesus Christ were being thrown out of the synagogues uh because of their uh belief in Jesus. So there's a lot of language that uh reflects that reality, right? Words like witness, testify, uh testimony, truth, all these words are used quite a lot. And of course the word advocate. So all words that we associate uh with trials, right? And so Jesus promises to send someone, this advocate uh to help the disciples and to lead and guide them in the truth. So we start to get a sense that the early church saw itself as existing in somewhat of a hostile world and had to defend itself from uh false accusations. And this advocate, the Holy Spirit, was sent to help them and to guide them. This is a theme that's also picked up in our second reading today from uh the first letter of Peter. As I've said, early Christians lived in a world often very indifferent to its message and oftentimes uh even hostile. We have to keep in mind that Christianity was brand new, right? It came out of Jud Judaism, but it was also different from Judaism.
And so it was new on the scene in a world that uh already contained many different religions and religious practices and often acknowledged multiple gods. coexisting and interacting with each other uh and with human beings. There were the cults of the Greek and Roman gods uh that had numerous gods that were gods of some activity, right? Like the god uh Mars, the god of war or of some characteristic or vice or virtue. Uh like the fertility cults or cults uh devoted to pleasure like wine. Bacas is the god of wine.
Right? So there were also eastern religions uh like Zoroastrianism that came from Persia from which uh the manes developed. You might be familiar with the manaches uh because St. Augustine had joined them as a young adult before he had his conversion. There were various Gnostic groups and cults. And then uh to make uh the context even more complicated, you had those who had been introduced to Christianity and then tried to join it to uh one of the aforementioned religions who just started to do their own thing with it, right? Those who perverted the faith uh handed down for their own agenda.
Romans and Greeks usually had no problem acknowledging Christ uh as a god. Um but for them he was just uh one god among many. Uh they couldn't understand why Christians insisted that they had the one true god and couldn't acknowledge any other god. And often that was the catalyst for arguments and persecution.
So they had to survive and develop in a world with no history of Christianity.
And in the earliest days uh they of course had no written gospel yet no literature to hand out to explain right the life of Jesus uh and his significance. So the only tools they had were the words that had had been uh passed on to them tradition u verbally right and then also uh the witness of their lives. So that's the context in which uh Christianity was introduced.
I think in many ways it's a world uh not unlike our own. Of course from the time the emperor Constantine legalized Christianity in 313 until the age of the enlightenment in the early 19th century uh Christianity was the dominant theological and cultural force in the west. Uh but that's not the case anymore. Our world in many ways resembles the world uh the early Christians found themselves. We live in a world with a plurality of religious beliefs and practices uh and various degrees of non-beliefnosticism uh atheism right also religious extremism in some places or hostility uh towards religion. many people, all these religions and practices are of equal value. Everything is relative, right?
Religion is just uh one choice among many, like picking a box of cereal uh out at the at the grocery store. It's a matter of preference and personal choice.
In this type of competition, uh, Christian values and the re relevancy of Christ are challenged and many refer to this age as post-Christian or neopagan, right? Uh, and so this is the context that we find ourselves. So, how are we to negotiate this world? How are we to live uh in this context? And I think we receive some good advice from our reading from uh the first letter of Peter today. Peter was writing to Christian communities undergoing persecution and struggling to survive.
First notice there's no compromising the sharing of the gospel. Peter says, "Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope."
That word explanation is translated uh is literally the the Greek word uh for defense uh which always meant a verbal defense and a civil trial. So once again we go back to this concept of uh being on trial. Peter immediately qualifies how how we are to give our explanation uh to inquires urging us to do so with gentleness and reverence. Why those qualities? Because Peter expected that non-Christians would question Christians with uh an aggressive and even harsh tone rather than responding uh aggressively back or harshly. Uh Christians are to turn the other cheek so to speak, right? By answering harshness with gentleness uh and to do so with reverence for the Lord. Not only does this uh reflect the spirit of Jesus himself, uh it's also more effective. Uh aggressively arguing uh never wins anyone over, right? It's it only furthers further entrenches them and their own uh position and then divisions continue to grow and get worse. The goal is not to reclaim our faith in order to win an argument uh but to win others to the faith more by our humble attitude by our gentleness uh by our compassion uh which disarms others.
Christians throughout the centuries have of course offered compelling reasons to believe in the gospel especially by the witness of their heroic lives. Uh but powerful reasons have also been offered often by the bad behavior of Christians uh against belief in the gospel. Evil certainly has its own designs on destruction of the true and the good. Uh but the ultimate responsibility for handing on uh and safeguarding the tradition uh rest with all the faithful.
Peter has given us a timeless call to always be ready to give an account of the hope that is within us. His words are not just addressed to priests or to profess religious uh but to all the faithful. Each one of us needs to be able to give an account of the hope that is in us. should be compelled uh not uh out of a sense of obligation um but out of joy wanting to share uh what is good, right? So that others can benefit uh to give testimony about what we have seen and heard how Jesus has influenced and changed our lives for the better. Uh because while our relationship uh with God is personal, uh it's never private, right? It's also for the edification of others. It helps others uh quite a lot when we share those good news that that those good stories.
The witness must be given in gentle uh gentleness and reverence. Uh what that means is the manner we use in giving witness to the gospel can have a powerful effect right for good or for bad on how that message is received.
Second Vatican Council said that the most effective attitude uh in evangelizing, the most effective attitude in kind of being in the world is not an us against them attitude. It's not Christianity uh against culture uh but Christianity uh working in and through culture uh changing it from the inside out.
In our readings today, we see that from the beginning, the followers of Christ and Christianity itself were uh under trial. And that's still true today. Uh we are under trial, right? People I think are always judging us uh testing uh our words and our actions, seeing how consistent we are uh we are being asked to take the stand and offer our defense.
So what kind of witness are we? Can we be relied on? What will the testimony of our words and actions say about us? Are we afraid to take a stand because we might perjure ourselves?
We too afraid that the prosecutor, other words, the accuser, the one of the ancient names for the devil, right? that he might have some troubling evidence against us. Unless we take the stand and testify, we're denying valuable evidence that could save others. Uh and if we don't take the stand, we're not ready to testify about Christ uh and give a reason for our faith. We cooperate with evil by our silence and the bad guys get away with their lies and their crimes.
The good news is that even when there are times when our words and actions don't match uh the claim of being a follower of Christ, if we truly repent, uh we know that we have a merciful judge who will forgive us and give us more time uh to work on our rehabilitation.
Jesus promises today that for those who are his genuine disciples uh no matter the trial, God the father sends his holy spirit uh to lead us, to guide us and to be our advocate.
The Holy Spirit is our defense attorney.
We have nothing to fear.
Let's now stand together and with one always profess our one faith using the words of the Apostles Creed.
I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontious Pilot, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day, he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
>> I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of saints, resurrection of the body, life everlasting. Amen.

You are indeed holy, O Lord, the f of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dwfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take this all of you and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
The mystery of faith.
We proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you.
