Automotive sales is a challenging profession that is easy to enter but difficult to master, requiring extensive hours, resilience against customer abuse, and continuous skill development; success depends on genuine enjoyment of the work, dedicated study of sales techniques, and persistence, as there is no such thing as a 'born' salesperson—skills are developed through practice and training.

What's it Take to Make it as a Car Salesperson - the Job is Easy to Get, Difficult to Get Good At!Added:
I know what people think about car sales people because I have been one for 47 years.
What do people think about car sales people, Trey?
Sleazy, shady, stingy.
>> [clears throat] >> Nobody ever gives me any nice words when I ask them to describe what the buying public thinks about car sales people.
But here's what I know about car sales people. I have probably met close to a quarter of a million car sales people, managers, finance managers, GSMs, GMs, and dealers in my career.
They are some of the most exceptional people I've ever met in my life because this is a hard job.
Easy job to get.
Damn difficult job to get good at, which is Hey Anthony, are you [ __ ] with the phone [clears throat] while I'm talking?
Um I definitely just checked it, but yeah.
Yeah.
In fact, another rule, which obviously you guys have not been told about, is you're not supposed to bring a phone into these things.
Okay?
You don't get me for You don't get me for very long, and you only get me for one session a month.
But if you know what I know, if you can do what I do, you'll make $250,000 a year selling cars.
But you got to work at it.
You've done it before. Was it easy?
No.
Winston, do you work long hours? Yes, sir. Evenings? Yes, sir. Saturdays? Yes, sir. Sundays? Yes, sir. Holidays? Yes, sir. You work on commission? Yes, sir.
Are you abused by the buying public?
Don't worry, if you haven't been yet, you will be. Okay? You will be. Did I just describe the job?
So by definition, by the laws of economics, if it's It's difficult job, you deserve to make good money.
And if you don't, you won't stick around.
Because nobody works a hard job for just a little bit of money.
Okay? Cuz all all of you are smarter than that.
Um I don't know if you'll make it.
Okay? I've been doing this a long time.
I cannot tell when someone's going to make it.
Um I know black people that make it. I know white people that make it. I know males. I know females. I know tall people, short people, fat people, thin people. I know people that have got the IQs of potatoes that have made it. And I know people who are smarter way smarter than me who didn't make it.
The key is you got to like it. Okay? And too new to rate. You You've got a clue or you wouldn't be back.
Okay?
If you like it, then you need to study.
You need to study sales skills. There's no such thing as a born car born car sales person. All right? I don't think there's anything such thing as a born sales person.
All right? Sales skills are developed.
But the sales training you get in this dealership or any other store I work with sucks.
Okay? Automotive sales training in general sucks.
And the reason we get away with it is because we sell the most popular product in the history of mankind. Okay? If you live in metro Atlanta, do people need cars and trucks?
They both want them and need them. Now, if you live in downtown New York or downtown Chicago or downtown LA or downtown Houston, you can probably get away without having a car or truck. But in metro Atlanta, you got to have it.
That's the good news. The good news is everybody needs and wants what we have.
The bad news is there's lots of different places for them to buy it.
We want them [clears throat] to buy them here. We want them to buy them from you.
We want them to buy them from you, we want them to buy them from you.
Because you're going to need to make good money or the job ain't worth it.
It's as simple as that.
